Definition (Mezirow)
„Transformative learning is learning that
transforms problematic frames of reference –
sets of fixed assumptions and expectations (habits of
mind, meaning perspectives, mindsets)—to make
them more inclusive, discriminating, open,
reflective, and emotionally able to change. Such
frames of reference are better than others because
they are more likely to generate beliefs and opinions
that will prove more true or justified to guide action
(Mezirow, 1991, 2000).
Taken-for-granted frames of reference include fixed interpersonal
relationships, political orientations, cultural bias, ideologies,
schemata, stereotyped attitudes and practices, occupational habits
of mind, religious doctrine, moral-ethical norms, psychological
preferences and schema, paradigms in science and mathematics,
frames in linguistics and social sciences, and aesthetic values and
standards.“ (Mezirow 2003, p.59)

Newman 2012
„ And the stories about individual learners ...
follow a familiar pattern of adult learning: the
learner enters the program with a mix of
apprehension and anticipation, acquires new
knowledge and skills, and grows in confidence
and self-esteem. In some cases the confidence
feeds on itself, the process becomes reflexive,
and the learning becomes profound; but even
so, I do not have to go to transformative
learning theory to explain it.”(Newman 2012 p.
38)

„My concern her is ... to highlight the
assumption underpinning the
transformative model, and shared more
broadly in conceptualizations of learning,
that positive outcomes invariably
accompany learning. Implicit in all of
these understandings is the sense that
learning is about change for the better
and that somehow it is always a good
thing.“ (Morrice 2012, S. 254)

“It has demonstrated the importance of
considering the social and cultural
factors that shape transformative
experience and highlights the need for
learning theories to recognize the
potential disbenefits and negative
outcomes of learning on identity and
conceptions of self.” (Morrice 2012, S.
