Accelerating data-intensive science by outsourcing the mundaneIan Foster
Talk at eResearch New Zealand Conference, June 2011 (given remotely from Italy, unfortunately!)
Abstract: Whitehead observed that "civilization advances by extending the number of important operations which we can perform without thinking of them." I propose that cloud computing can allow us to accelerate dramatically the pace of discovery by removing a range of mundane but timeconsuming research data management tasks from our consciousness. I describe the Globus Online system that we are developing to explore these possibilities, and propose milestones for evaluating progress towards smarter science.
Predicting the future with social media (Twitter y Box Office)Gonzalo Martín
This document examines using social media content from Twitter to predict real-world outcomes, specifically box office revenues for movies. It finds that the rate at which tweets are created about movies can be used to build a predictive model that outperforms market-based predictors. Sentiment analysis of tweets is also found to improve predictive power, with positive tweets encouraging viewership after a movie's release. The study analyzes attention and popularity trends on Twitter for movies as well as how sentiments influence people and box office performance.

Carl Kesselman and I (along with our colleagues Stephan Erberich, Jonathan Silverstein, and Steve Tuecke) participated in an interesting workshop at the Institute of Medicine on July 14, 2009. Along with Patrick Soon-Shiong, we presented our views on how grid technologies can help address the challenges inherent in healthcare data integration.
The survey of 7,000 consumers across 8 countries found that traditional television is no longer the only or primary way people consume video content. Younger consumers, especially those under 25, are leading the shift towards watching content on mobile devices and PCs. Three out of 10 adults now watch some content weekly on alternative devices. While all age groups are changing their viewing habits, younger viewers are more dissatisfied with traditional TV and eager to embrace new options. This behavioral shift represents an impending transformation of the media industry as new generations of viewers drive the evolution of content consumption.
This document is a speech given by Viviane Reding, the EU Commissioner for Telecoms and Media, on July 9, 2009 at the Lisbon Council in Brussels. In the speech, Reding discusses how developing Europe's digital economy can help drive economic recovery from the financial crisis. She outlines the principles of Ludwig Erhard's social market economy and argues that focusing on high-speed broadband infrastructure and digital services can stimulate growth while benefiting consumers. Reding proposes several immediate actions the EU can take to boost the digital economy, such as reforming telecoms rules and encouraging competition and investment in next-generation broadband networks.
One of the greatest challenges to finding a job, changing direction in our lives and becoming the people we are capable of becoming is learning to see the world in different ways. When you are operating in the shadows you are not seeing the true nature of things. There are powerful and penetrating insights into the world when you start to think very carefully and closely about things. These insights are what are separating the people who are going to really get the results they want from those who will not.
The document discusses the benefits of exercise for mental health. Regular physical activity can help reduce anxiety and depression and improve mood and cognitive functioning. Exercise causes chemical changes in the brain that may help boost feelings of calmness, happiness and focus.
The most important skill any of us can master is creative visualization. Creative visualization is the art of creating pictures in your mind of something you would like to happen in the future.

One of the largest challenges of our lives is making sure that we do not meet our need to feel significant in a way that is destructive. For example, many people in their need to feel significant will try and be critical of others.

Tango Argentino is a book written by Bryant and Faye about the history and culture of tango dancing in Argentina. It describes how tango emerged in the late 19th century in poorer neighborhoods of Buenos Aires and Montevideo before gaining wider popularity. The book explores the development of tango styles and social aspects of the dance in its country of origin.

I gave this keynote talk at the 2009 Grid and Parallel Computing conference in Geneva. The goal of the talk was to lay out what might be involved in formalizing the steps involved in creating and operating a virtual organization. I'm not sure the slides make too much sense by themselves. But maybe there are useful pictures.
