Introduction
The objects presented in this catalogue have been part of a German private collection for over 100 years.
The present owner’s ancestor, born in 1870 at an estate in Schleswig-Holstein, took part in the suppression
of the Boxer Rebellion (1900-1901), as first lieutenant of the German troops under Count von Waldersee. He
was assigned to the staff of the commander-in-chief and was responsible for the mail and the encryption of
communications. In this capacity, he met General Yin Chang (fig p. 4), who spoke excellent German and was
involved in the peace negotiations on the Chinese imperial side. When the general went to Berlin in 1901 as
ambassador for China, the two men remained in contact. According to family tradition, the grandfather was
able to acquire the artworks described in this catalogue, thanks to the mediation of Yin Chang.

The fabulous Baxia is the sixth of the dragon’s nine sons within the tradition of Chinese mythology. His name
is Bixi. The nine sons of the dragon are often used in Chinese architecture as auspicious emblems. The
difference between a Baxia and an ordinary turtle is that it has a row of teeth, as well as a different shape and
number of shield plates. This mythical beast, also known as the dragon turtle, is a symbol of happiness and
longevity. It is portrayed with an energetically raised head and feet splayed on the ground, in a position of
powerful advance. Comparable bronze figures of Bixi exist only in front of the Qianqing-Palace and the Taihe-
Hall in the Forbidden City as well as at the entrance of Beihai park, which formerly belonged to the imperial
city as well.

The partition shows elaborate openwork carving on both sides and is a typical specimen of interior decor in
the imperial palaces of the Qing period. Such furnishings are of great importance, as they structure interior
spaces, but do not form hermetic areas due to their openwork carving. They were often arched frames
which could be closed by thin curtains if required. The advantage of such a device for creating ambience
becomes all the more evident when we note that palace interiors were often relatively dark. However, there
are only a few examples of designs with octagonal doorways comparable to the present case.

An ihrem 50.
Graf Waldersee in China”,1907年)。
One comparable partition with octagonal doorway is in the Chuxiugong palace hall (Fig. p. 14), a residential
building in the western area of the Forbidden City. In the 1850s, Cixi – who later assumed power as empress
dowager – lived as a concubine in this hall; and here she gave birth to her son, the later Tongzhi emperor, in
1856. On her 50th birthday in 1883, she moved into the hall once again.
The second example was fomerly in the entrance hall of the Yiluandian (Fig. p. 16). This palace on Central
Lake (Zhonghai) was built for Cixi between the years of 1885 and 1888 on the grounds of the Winter Palace,
west of the Forbidden City. A historical photo of 1900 shows the partition slightly elevated and accessible via
a small staircase (Fig. 3). The hall had been selected by the commander-in-chief of German troops for his
headquarters, but it was completely destroyed by a fire of 17 – 18 April 1901, which originated in the kitchen
(see also the diary of Fedor von Rauch, "Mit Graf Waldersee in China", 1907).

The screen in our sale (lot 184) shows a wutong tree on each side of the octagonal doorway, their dense
foliage twined together. Numerous birds sit in the branches. The wutong tree is closely linked in Chinese
mythology with the phoenix, which appears prominently over the doorway and is also a symbol for the
empress (fig. p. 21). In the underbrush thrive bamboo and lingzhi mushrooms, as well as peonies and other
flowers. On the left is a pair of deer and on the right is a pair of cranes, both promising long life.
A studio named Yang Shi Lei studio was largely responsible for creating designs for such carvings, which were
then fashioned at the imperial workshop in Beijing or left to special workshops in Yangzhou. The liveliness of
the portrayal of this screen, which is both powerful and harmonious, is a clear indicator of imperial quality.
By reason of its provenance, iconography and stunning quality, it seems probable that this palace room
divider was ordered for an important hall of the Empress Dowager Cixi.

After the partition was brought to Germany on the steamer "Gera", it stood in the home of the lieutenant
for many years. Prof. Dr. Karl Hagen of the Hamburg Museum of Ethnology saw the partition there for the
first time in 1924 and suggested that it be loaned to the museum for exhibition (fig. p. 22). And so the
piece was displayed prominently within the East Asian collection at the Hamburg Museum of Ethnology
for almost thirty years, from 1926 to 1954, except for a few years during the Second World War, when it
was stored in the basement for safety reasons. From 1954 to 2017 the partition stood in the home of the
present owner in Germany (fig. p. 22).

S. 34). (Siehe Lot 313 im Hauptkatalog).

The “bo” bell is an ancient Chinese musical instrument. Such bronze bells were suspended singly in their
own wooden frames. The bell has the form of two roof tiles propped against each other. A total of 36 bronze
knobs are arranged around the outer wall; the front carries an inscription.
In the 26th year of Qianlong period (1761), 11 ancient shepherds’ bells were found and excavated in Linjiang
(Jilin Prov.). They came to the imperial court through the Manchurian court official Asha from Jiangxi, who was
on an inspection tour, and there they were identified by the emperor as Zhou period “bo” bells. Only one bell
was missing from the original twelve-tone set.
The emperor was especially pleased with this discovery, for at that time the palace armies had just achieved
a historic victory over the Uighur tribes Hui and Zhun. According to the old court ritual, “after a great victory
a celebration with music and dance” was to be held and “to commemorate the accomplishment bells and
bronze vessels cast”. Therefore, the missing bell was reproduced to complete the twelve-tone series.
This undertaking was a significant achievement, since it demonstrated that the Manchu court carried on
the rituals of ancient Chinese imperial rule, proclaiming happiness and well-being, honoring merit and thus
consolidating its rule. This observance of rites of the Zhou period simultaneously served to secure the power
of the Manchu emperor.
In the 27th year of the Qianlong era (1762), the emperor celebrated the completion of the bell set by
investing a building in the palace gardens known as the “Islands of the Immortals in View”, with a new name,
“Hall for the Harmony of Antiquity”, and hanging the twelve bells within (fig. p. 36). In hours of leisure it was his
custom to visit this hall and inspect the bells. The Qianlong Emperor also commanded that in the future the
tones of these twelve bells serve as a reference for all musical performances, to achieve a perfect musical
harmony. He was so taken with these bells that he wrote seventeen poems for the Hall for the Harmony of
Antiquity (fig. p. 38), which were included in the Poetry Collection of the Qianlong Emperor. In addition, he had
an inscription set on the replacement bell, a rubbing of which can be seen in the catalogue Mirror of Antiquity
of the Imperial Studio (fig. p. 34). (See lot 313 in the main catalogue).

or modifications of any nature whatsoever.
4.2 The guarantee given to the Purchaser in
accordance with the above provision shall not be
applicable at the discretion of Koller if:
(i) the description of the item in the auc-
tion catalogue was supported by the
view of a specialist or by the prevailing
view of specialists, or if the description
in the auction catalogue suggested
that differences of opinion exist in this
respect;
(ii) the forgery was not identifiable as such
at the time of the successful bid in ac-
cordance with the current state of
research and with the generally ack-
nowledged and usual methods, or only
with disproportionate effort;
(iii) the forgery (in Koller’s careful view) was
produced before 1880; or
(iv) the purchase item is a painting, water-
colour, a drawing or sculpture which
according to the details set out in the
auction catalogue should have been
created prior to 1880.

4.4 Koller may at its complete discretion waive
the assertion of grounds for exclusion pursuant
to the above Clause 4.2 or the fulfilment of pre-
conditions pursuant to the above Clause 4.3.
4.5 The claims of the Purchaser against Koller
under Clause 4.1 are limited to the reimburse-
ment of the purchase price and surcharge (incl.
VAT) paid by the Purchaser. Further or other
claims of the Purchaser against Koller or its
employees are excluded under any legal title
whatsoever.
5. Participation in the auction
5.1 Any party may participate in an auction as a
Purchaser. However, Koller reserves the right at
its complete discretion to prevent any person
entering its premises or attending or participa-
ting in its auctions.
5.2 Purchasers who are not personally known
to Koller must register at least 48 hours before
the auction, using the form provided for this
purpose. A copy of the passport of the Purcha-
ser must be enclosed with registration, signed
with legal effect. In the event of every payment
default of the Purchaser, Koller shall be entitled
to charge the credit card of the Purchaser in
accordance with the details provided on the re-
gistration form up to the level of the owed sum
plus the expenses of the card provider.
5.3 If a Purchaser who is unknown to Koller is
planning to bid for items with upper estima-
ted values of more than CHF 15,000, he shall
be required to present to Koller in advance a
certificate of creditworthiness issued by a bank
approved by Koller.
5.4 In the case of bids for items with upper esti-
mated values of more than
CHF 30,000, Koller may demand that the
Purchaser first remits 20 % of the lower esti-
mated value as security. Following the auction,
Koller will offset this sum against its claims and
the claims of the Seller, and will reimburse any
possible surpluses to the Purchaser without
delay.
53. | 49
6. Auction
6.1 Koller may initiate the auctioning of an item
below the minimum selling price agreed upon
with the Seller. A bid placed at an auction is a
binding offer. The bidder shall remain bound by
his bid until this is either outbid or rejected by
Koller. Double bids shall immediately be called
once again; in case of doubt, the auction ma-
nagement shall decide.
6.2 Koller may refuse a bid either without giving
reasons or if a Purchaser fails to fulfil the con-
ditions for participation in an auction pursuant
to the above Clauses 5.2 to 5.4. Koller may
also knock down or withdraw auctioned items
without a sale even if this is not apparent to the
auction participants.
6.3 Koller reserves the right to combine, sepa-
rate or omit numbered lots in the catalogue or
to offer them out of sequence. Koller reserves
the right to sell lots “conditionally” at its sole
discretion, in which event the hammer price will
be considered as conditional and the highest
bidder will remain bound by his bid for 14 days
following the auction. The highest bidder will
be released from all obligations if he does not
receive a statement from Koller within this peri-
od declaring the hammer price as final.
6.4 Written bids from potential Purchasers who
cannot attend the auction in person are ac-
cepted up to 48 hours before the bidding begins.
6.5 Potential Purchasers may bid by telephone if
they have given written notice at least 48 hours
before the auction starts. Koller does not accept
telephone bids for amounts under CHF 500 and
Purchasers are requested to leave a written bid
or participate in the salesroom.
6.6 Potential Purchasers who intend to place
their bids in the course of an Online Auction via
the internet may participate in the auction once
their registration applications have been appro-
ved by Koller. Koller reserves the right to decline
registration applications at its discretion.
6.7 Koller refuses all liability for any kind of bids
as well as advance notifications of telephone
bidding which are not taken into consideration.
Telephone bidders and persons giving written
instructions are also subject to the provisions of
Clause 5 relating to proof of identity and finan-
cial soundness. In the case of Purchasers who
place bids in the course of an Online Auction via
the internet, Clause 5 only applies with regards
to financial soundness.
7. Transfer of title
Ownership of an auctioned item shall be trans-
ferred to the Purchaser as soon as the purchase
price and the surcharge (incl. VAT) have been
comprehensively paid and Koller has attributed
these payments to the corresponding item.
8. Collection of the auctioned items
8.1 The auctioned items must be collected at
the Purchaser's own expense within 7 days from
the end of the auction during official opening
hours. If time permits, the items may be handed
over after each auction session. The handover
shall be performed following comprehensive
payment of the purchase price as well as the
surcharge (incl. VAT) and the attribution of this
sum to the auctioned item by Koller. Cheques
offered as payment must be confirmed by
the drawee bank before the auctioned item is
handed over.
8.2 During the aforementioned period Koller
shall be liable for loss, theft, damage or destruc-
tion of items which have been auctioned and
paid for, but only up to the total of the auction
price, surcharge and VAT. Koller ceases to have
liability after the aforementioned period, and
the Purchaser shall be responsible for ensuring
adequate insurance cover for the auctioned
item. No liability can be assumed for frames and
glass. If the auctioned items are not collected
within 7 days, Koller will store the works at a
company of their choice at the purchaser’s own
risk and expense or on their own premises at a
daily rate of CHF 10.- per object.
8.3 Transport orders may be sent to Koller in
writing. Unless otherwise agreed in writing,
transport insurance shall be taken out for the
sold items at the expense of the Purchaser.
Glazed pictures and fragile items shall not be
sent by Koller.
9. Payment for the auctioned items
9.1 The invoice for a successful bid for an aucti-
oned item is payable within 7 days from the end
of the auction. Payments by credit card are only
possible with the approval of Koller’s accounting
department, and are subject to processing fees
amounting to between 2 and 4% of the invoiced
amount, payable by the purchaser and added to
the invoice total.
Irrespective of the Purchaser's instructions,
Koller may use any payments by the Purchaser
as settlement for any debt owed by the Purcha-
ser to Koller or the Seller and set off any debt
which it owes to the Purchaser against its own
claims. If the Purchaser defaults on a payment,
default interest of 10% p.a. shall be charged on
top of the invoiced sum.
9.2 If the Purchaser does not pay or does not
pay promptly, Koller may moreover in its own
name and in the Seller's name optionally (i) insist
on the fulfilment of the purchase agreement
or (ii) without further notice withdraw from the
purchase agreement and waive the subsequent
performance of the Purchaser or assert a claim
for compensation for non-performance; in the
latter case Koller shall also be entitled, irrespec-
tive of a possible minimum sales price, to sell
the item either directly or on the occasion of an
auction, and may use the proceeds to reduce
the debts of the Purchaser. Any possible sales
price above the original hammer price shall be
paid out to the Seller. The Purchaser is liable to
Koller and the Seller for all prejudice caused by
non-payment or late payment.
9.3 Koller retains a right of retention and a lien
on all the Purchaser's items in its custody until
full payment of all monies owed. Koller may
exercise such liens in accordance with the legis-
lation on the enforcement of debts or by private
sale (including in its own name). The plea of prior
lien exploitation pursuant to Art. 41 of the Swiss
Debt Collection and Bankruptcy Act is excluded.
10. Representation
Each Purchaser shall be personally liable for
the bid placed by him. Proof of the power of
representation may be requested from persons
bidding as agents for a third party or as an organ
of a corporate body. The agent shall be jointly
and severally liable with his principal for the
fulfilment of all obligations.
11. Miscellaneous provisions
11.1 The auction shall be attended by an official
from the city of Zurich. The attending official,
the local authority and the state have no liability
for the acts of Koller.
11.2 Koller reserves the right to publish illustra-
tions and photographs of sold items in its own
publications and the media and to publicise its
services therewith.
11.3 The aforementioned provisions form part
of each individual purchase agreement conclu-
ded at the auction. Amendments are binding
only with Koller's written agreement.
11.4 The present Auction Conditions and all
amendments thereof are governed by Swiss
law.
11.5 The courts of the Canton of Zurich shall be
exclusively responsible for settling disputes (in-
cluding the assertion of offsetting and counter-
claims) which arise out of or in conjunction with
these Auction Conditions (including their vali-
dity, legal effect, interpretation or fulfilment).
Koller may, however, initiate legal proceedings
before any other competent court.

BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI. Nordostindien, Pala, 8./9. Jh. H 16,5 cm.
jaya). Rückseitige Sanskrit-Stifterinschrift in Siddhamatrika-Schrift: Hum
Mahavira Svaha “Heil Dir oh grosser Held!”
This Buddha could possibly originate from the Nalanda Monastery in
Bihar in North India. Nalanda was a famous centre for Buddhist studies
between the 8th and 12th centuries. Scholars from many countries outside
India studied sometimes for many years Vajrayana Buddhism at the
Nalanda University. On the way back to their home countries they usually
carried in addition to manuscripts written on palm-leaf also small statues
cast in bronze or made of stone. This Buddha image must have been for
more than 1000 years in Tibet and was countless times touched and ritual-
ly washed, as indicated by the shiny surface.
