[Editorial]
tingindustrie – bringen Menschen
zusammen, wir stellen das Fun-
dament des Dialogs. Ein Blick aus
dem Fenster genügt, um zu wissen,
wie wichtig das ist.
Das politisch und wirtschaftlich
unsichere Umfeld fordert Veran-
staltungsplaner heraus, noch effi-
zienter als bislang zukunftsstarke
Meetingkonzepte und -designs für
eine zunehmend anspruchsvollere
Klientel zu entwerfen und zu kalku-
lieren.
Diese CIM-Ausgabe und das beilie-
gende EVVC-Special vermitteln ein
Bild davon. Sollten Sie mich – „die
Neue“ – persönlich kennenlernen
wollen: Die ibtm world 2016 oder
die IMEX Frankfurt 2017 sind eine
gute Gelegenheit. Ich freue mich
auf Sie!
Herzlich,
n This is the last issue of CIM for 2016. And the first with me as new Editor-
in-Chief. I look forward to the challenge of further developing a leading trade
journal of the European meetings industry together with the CIM team.
Challenges. Further development. Sounds like the stereotypical phrases
you always hear when someone new takes over at the helm, doesn’t it? True!
It’s the contents that really count? Also true! And this takes us right to the
topic. The focal topic of this issue – challenges – and a long-running topic (not
only) of our industry: constant further development.
From the content aspect, both digital transformation and, above all, chang-
ing perceptions of safety and security in the wake of terrorism are the chal-
lenges our industry must and will address with up-to-date processes and
formats that meet customer needs. We – the globally networked meetings in-
dustry - bring people together, we provide the foundations of dialogue. A look
outside the window is enough to realise how important this is.
These political and economic uncertainties challenge event organisers to
develop and calculate future-forward meeting concepts and designs that are
more efficient than ever for an increasingly demanding clientele.
This issue of CIM and the enclosed EVVC special convey this very clearly. If
you would like to meet me – the “new kid on the block” – in person: ibtm
2016 in Barcelona or IMEX 2017 in Frankfurt would be good opportunities.
I look forward to getting to know you!

n IECA. Die Internationale Event- Congress-Akademie (IECA) aus Mannheim bietet am
rechts an.

Laut Veranstalter MICEboard sei
dies ein in der Eventbranche einzigartiges Format. Für qualifi-
zierte Veranstaltungsplaner ist die Teilnahme kostenfrei.

n Stockholm. Kaum hat die MS
Romantika der Tallink Silja Line
den Hafen der schwedischen
Hauptstadt verlassen, beginnt
ein atemberaubender Sturm
auf den Duty-free-Shop: Sack-
karrenweise – und mit einem
seligen Lächeln auf den Lippen
– ziehen skandinavische Pas-
sagiere den kostbaren zoll-
freien Alkohol über die weitläu-
figen Flure. Alleine für dieses
Schauspiel, denkt man un-
willkürlich, hat sich die Reise
schon gelohnt. Zum Spaß
allerdings sind wir nicht hier.
Unterdessen nämlich ha-
ben die Teilnehmer des MICE
Boat auf dem Konferenzdeck
die Arbeit aufgenommen. 50Ve-
ranstaltungsplaner aus
Deutschland und 27 interna-
tionale Aussteller treffen beim
diesjährigen MICE Boat aufein-
ander, zugelassen sind übri-
gens nur jene Planer, die
tatsächlich regelmäßig Veran-
staltungen im Ausland organi-
sieren. Das soll sicherstellen,
dass man am Ende auch ins Ge-
schäft kommt – und nicht wo-
möglich wertvolle Zeit mit
Gesprächen verliert, die von
vorneherein zu keinem Ab-
schluss führen können. Regio-
nale Einkäufer oder Supplier
aus Deutschland sind im
Konzept also nicht vorgesehen.
Ein Großteil der Planer ist schon
am Vortag angereist und hat in
Stockholm an einer Meetings-
und Incentive-Exkursion teil-
genommen. Jetzt, auf hoher
See, wird’s ein bisschen unkon-
ventioneller.
Auf hoher See
Networking-Veranstaltungen gibt es viele.
Aussteller-Roadshows ebenfalls.

Gone sailing
Networking events exist aplenty. The same goes for exhibitor roadshows. And site inspec-
tions, of course. But only one event combines all three. We were part of it.
n Stockholm. The MS Romantika of the Tallink Silja Line has just
left the harbour of the Swedish capital when a huge crowd storms
the duty free shop: Scandinavian passengers roll the precious duty-
free alcohol down the vast corridors by the cartload – with happy
smiles on their faces. This spectacle alone was already worth the
trip, is my first thought. But we are not just here for fun.
On the conference deck the participants of MICE Boat are already
getting down to work. 50 event planners from Germany and 27 in-
ternational exhibitors have gathered for this year’s MICE Boat; only
planners who regularly stage fairs abroad are admitted, mind you.
This is to ensure that actual deals will be done in the end – and that
no time is wasted with talks that will not lead to business anyway.
Regional buyers or suppliers from Germany are not part of the con-
cept. Most planners already arrived the day before and have al-
ready taken part in a meeting and incentive excursion to Stockholm.
But now, at sea, things will get a bit more unconventional.
In the conference room of the Swiss suppliers there’s a game of
Runaround going on. Yes, the TV game show hosted by Mike Reid or
– for a brief time – Leslie Crowther and Stan Boardman in the UK.
Planners have to compete in three teams – like in the original TV
show – to win differently coloured balls, involving lots of running
around and jumping (“Runaround … now!”) accompanied by the
original sound effects. All the questions are about Switzerland. If
you don’t know the right answer you can jump to the supposedly
correct area at the last moment, following the lead of the other
teams.
Things are a bit quieter in the other groups, but the focus is on
novel active formats instead of boring classroom style presenta-
tions. And according to the planners, this approach is definitely
worth following. “I think it’s great,” says Sven Beckmann of ellis
EVENTS at half-time for MICE Boat. His calendar for the final

Im Konferenzraum der Schweizer Supplier
wird zum Beispiel „1, 2 oder 3“ gespielt. Ja,
dieses „1, 2 oder 3“. Das mit Michael
Schanze oder – falls Sie die Gnade der
späten Geburt genießen und erst in den
späten 80ern aufgewachsen sind – Biggi
Lechtermann.
In
Ermangelung tut’s freilich auch die Fähigkeit,
im letzten Moment noch auf das vermeintlich
richtige – weil von den anderen Teams be-
setzte – Feld zu hüpfen.
Ganz so stürmisch geht’s in den anderen
Gruppen zwar nicht zu, originelle, aktive
Formate statt langweiliger Frontbeschal-
die abschließenden Speed Datings sei be-
reits beängstigend voll, dabei habe er doch
noch gar nicht alle Supplier getroffen.
Beckmann steht mit dieser Einschätzung
nicht alleine, alle Planer, mit denen wir
sprechen, äußern sich ähnlich und überein-
stimmend positiv.
mats MICE Boat. Nach drei Tagen hat man
eben nicht nur viele Gespräche geführt, sich
getroffen, ausgetauscht und Geschäfte
gemacht – sondern auch zwei spannende
Destinationen live und vor Ort gesehen.
Während die Planer und Aussteller den
letzten Abend in Gruppensessions und mit
den bereits erwähnten Speed Datings ver-
bringen, geht drei Decks weiter unten erneut
deren Tag. Jochen Gebauer
speed dating sessions is already impressively full, and he hasn’t
even met all of the suppliers yet. Beckmann is not alone with his
opinion, all the planners sound similarly enthusiastic. And many
of them are already thinking of a specific event or customer for
which or whom they want to get a proposal. “Let’s see if they can
help me there,” says a participant who wants to remain anony-
mous. Once it has reached this stage, an event like MICE Boat is
really good at what it is doing.
One can also see this in host Peter Cramer, who expresses
his “deep satisfaction” during the group presentations – and is
genuinely beaming with enthusiasm. “Tomorrow in Tallinn will
be great, too.” Indeed: When MS Romantika stops at the Estoni-
an capital the next morning and the local convention bureau in-
vites passengers to a tour of the city and MICE presentation in
the historical town hall, the strengths of the MICE Boat format
are impressively confirmed. Three days later we have not only
had lots of talks, get-togethers, sharing of experiences and sign-
ing of deals – but also seen two exciting destinations live and up
close.
While planners and exhibitors spend their last evening with
the already mentioned group speed dating sessions, crowds
flock to the duty free shop three decks below again. But that’s
another story for another day. Jochen Gebauer
