Revision: Verbs! Question: What is a verb? Answer: It is the “doing” word in a sentence, e.g. to swim, to think, to love, to eat, to wish, to be, to have etc. ---------------------------------------------------- A verb describes the action in a sentence. E.g.	John ran to the park. We love the Adelaide Crows. I have an orange jumper.
Verb Conjugation! This is when you change a verb to match the person or thing it is talking about. For example: I am Belinda. You play Tennis on Saturday. She eats the yummy chocolate. We love school! :) You are nice year 7 students. They eat pizza on Fridays. Notice how the verb changes in English?... ...the same thing happens in German as you have already seen...
sein = to be Ich bin Belinda. Du bist John. Sie ist Jane. Wir sind glücklich! Ihr seid in der 7B. Sie sind doofe Klasse 8 Studente. I am Belinda. You are John. She is Jane. We are happy! You are in 7B. They are silly year 8 students “sein” is called an irregular verb – you have to memorise it! (sorry!)
There are some “predictable” verbs that you don’t need to memorise. These are called _______ verbs... regular
“spielen” (to play) is a regular verb. Let’s conjugate “spielen” – “to play” spielen ich	spiele du	spielst er,sie,es	spielt wir	spielen ihr	spielt sie, Sie	spielen – to play I play you play he/she/it plays we play you (plural) play they, you (formal) play
To conjugate a regular verb in German you need: The stem of the verb The regular verb ending
The stem of the verb= The verb without the “en” on the end of it. For example:	spielen  spiel (stem) gewinnen  gewinn (stem) schwimmen  schwimm (stem) Guess the stems of these verbs: (to be called) heißen heiß (to wait) warten wart
The regular verb ending As we saw with “spielen” before, regular verbs have certain endings. These endings are the same for ALL regular verbs. They are:
Putting it all together Stem of verb + verb ending = correct German! How do you know which ending to use? It depends who is in the sentence... I play Basketball = Ich spiele Basketball. He plays Tennis = Er spielt Tennis.
Now, form sentences using these elements. Make sure you conjugate the verb correctly! wir / gewinnen / heute / Tennis.
