How to use “weil” und “dass” (conjuctions)
weil = because - “weil” makes the verb go to the end of the sentence.
Here are some examples using the present, perfect tenses and modal verbs. Notice
where the verbs are positioned!!
Ich kann nicht kommen, weil mein Auto kaputt ist. (I can’t come because my car is not working.)
Wir finden Deutsch fantastisch, weil es interessant ist. (We think German’s fantastic because it’s
interesting.)
Ich habe Tennis nicht gespielt, weil es geregnet hat. (I didn’t play Tennis because it has rained.)
Er kann nicht kommen, weil er lernen muss. (He can’t come because he must study.)
dass = that - “dass” also makes the verb go to the end of the sentence.
Ich denke, dass Karl und Max sehr doof sind. (I think that Karl and Max are very stupid.)
Er sagt, dass er heute um 10 Uhr kommt. (He says that he is coming at 10 o’clock today.)
Sie hat gesagt, dass sie ihre Hausaufgaben nicht gemacht hat. (She has said that she has not done her
homework.)
Ich finde, dass Mathe manchmal langweilig sein kann. (I find that Maths can sometimes be boring.)
Make sure you always use a comma immediately before the conjunction (“weil” or “dass”).
