2. What are they? Separable verbs are verbs which have a separable prefix. A prefix is a word or part of a word that you put “in front” of another word to create a new word or change it's meaning. E.g: “dis”appear, “un”fair, “in”appropriate etc. The same thing happens in German: ziehen = to pull VS anziehen = to put on (clothes) machen = to do, make VS zumachen = to close

3. Task 1: Turn to Seiten 20 – 22 of your Kursbuch. Go through the cartoon story and see how many separable verbs you can find being used. Note them down in your exercise book: e.g. Karl fährtmit Monika weg.

5. the rest of the verb is conjugated and is the second idea of the sentence.z.B. : aufstehen = to get up (out of bed) Hans steht jeden Tag um 9 Uhr auf. Jeden Tag steht Hans um 9 Uhr auf. (Every day Hans gets up at 9 o’clock.)

6. Different ways of using Separable Verbs: zumBeispiel, zumachen = to close 1. Present Tense: Ichmache die Türzu. (I am closing the door.) 2. With Modal Verbs: Ich muss die Türzumachen. (I have to/must close the door.) Here, the prefix is reattached to the verb and goes to the end of the sentence in its infinitive form. 3. Perfect Past Tense: Ichhabe die Türzugemacht. (I have closed the door.) Here, the prefix is attached to the front of the past participle.

7. How do I know if it’s a separable verb? Use your dictionary! Look up the word in the GERMAN section. If it is separable, it should have a + in the infinitive z.B. mit+bringen OR it should say sep next to the infinitive verb. z.B. (from my dictionary): (English section) collect = abholen (German section)ab+holensep to collect
