A presentation I gave at the "Infotag" 2012 (Zurich University of the Arts) to inform prospective students about our Bachelor program "Cast/ Audiovisual Media". Includes Projects 2011 and 2012 - without videos.
Plaster of Paris is a material made by heating gypsum that is used for molding and sculpting. It can be molded when wet and hardens into a strong structure when dry. In embalming, plaster of Paris can be used to reconstruct faces or body parts to create a natural appearance. Plaster of Paris is formed by heating gypsum to 300 degrees Fahrenheit and has various uses like orthopedic casts and movie/TV sets. It gets its name from large gypsum deposits located in Paris. When water is added, plaster of Paris rehydrates and hardens through a chemical reaction.
The document discusses the Position of Safe Immobilisation (POSI), which is a position used to rest the hand during periods of immobilization. It involves flexing the MCP joints 60-90 degrees, extending the PIP joints fully, extending the DIP joints fully, and extending the wrist 10-45 degrees. This position is important because it minimizes the risk of joint stiffness and contractures when immobilizing the hand. The POSI can be used for fractures, tendon injuries, nerve injuries, burns, and other hand injuries or conditions. It is important to splint the hand in the POSI as soon as possible to prevent stiffness and contractures from developing.
The document discusses common orthopedic issues that may present in the emergency department, including the need for orthopedic consultation and immobilization techniques. It provides guidance on evaluating suspected fractures or dislocations, including initial assessment, focused examination, providing analgesia, and ordering relevant imaging studies. Principles for approaching severe musculoskeletal injuries are outlined, such as addressing shock, obtaining standard radiographs, and immediate definitive treatment when possible.
This document discusses principles of casting and splinting and common pitfalls. It begins by noting how casting skills have declined with newer fixation methods, though casting remains important. It then covers materials like plaster and fiberglass, their properties, advantages, and disadvantages. Key principles discussed include properly padding and molding casts to avoid pressure sores, not overtightening, and positioning joints in positions that maintain mobility. The document cautions against errors like blocking finger motion with upper extremity casts. It provides guidance on casting different areas like the hand, elbow, and lower limb in functional positions. Methods of cast wedging to regain reduction are also reviewed.
This document discusses the implications of the Victorian Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities for organizations that provide services related to human rights and well-being. It outlines key aspects of the Charter, including which public authorities it applies to and which specific human rights it protects. It also discusses how the Charter can be used to challenge discriminatory practices, create a human rights-based approach to serving clients, and address human rights issues in two case studies involving access to drug treatment and housing.
The document provides an overview of the development of human rights from ancient times to modern international law. It traces the origins of concepts like natural rights in documents like the Magna Carta and Declaration of Independence. It then summarizes major milestones in establishing international human rights standards, including the UN Charter, Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and International Covenants on Civil/Political and Economic/Social/Cultural Rights. The final sections define key terms like human rights, humanitarian law, and the different categories of rights.
This document provides an overview of key concepts related to human rights including definitions, characteristics, and classifications. It defines human rights as universal natural rights or status that people have regardless of other factors. The four main characteristics of human rights are that they are inherent, universal, indivisible, and inalienable. Human rights can be classified into civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights. The document also discusses specific human rights such as the right to education, environment, peace, and addresses issues like violence against women and small arms proliferation.

The document defines human rights and discusses their origins and categories. It provides definitions of human rights from the United Nations and Philippine Commission on Human Rights as inherent rights necessary for human life and dignity. The document then outlines the basic characteristics of human rights as fundamental, inalienable, and universal. It proceeds to categorize human rights and provide examples, such as political rights, democratic rights, and economic/social/cultural rights. The document concludes by tracing the origins of human rights protections in the Philippines from the 1896 Malolos Constitution to provisions in modern constitutions beginning in 1935.
