Messen bis hin zu Konzerten und Sport-
Events. Wie erstaunlich wandlungsfähig
vor allem die beiden Convention Halls sind,
wurde gerade in den zurückliegenden
­Monaten immer wieder aufs Neue bewie-
sen: So inszenierten wir zunächst für die
MHK Group im April inmitten der Event-
Aus­stellung einen Berliner Marktplatz im
Stil der 20er-Jahre. Im Mai verwandelte
sich ein Teil der Convention Hall I in eine
Großküche, in der 45 Estrel-Köche die
Herausforderung annahmen, für eine Gala
mit 650 Gästen ein exklusives 7-Gänge-
Menü im angrenzenden Teil der Halle zu­
zubereiten. Einen Monat später traten bei
der European Championship in Yu-Gi-Oh!
– einem japanischen Sammelkartenspiel –
die besten Spieler des Kontinents gegen­
einander an und kurz darauf kämpften
­hunderte Sportler um den Weltmeistertitel
in Kimura Shukokai Karate. Im August ver-
wandelte sich schließlich die Convention
Hall I im Rahmen der Eurofurence in eine

In May, the back portion of Convention Hall I was
transformed into a commercial kitchen, where 45
­Estrel chefs stepped up to the challenge of creating
an exclusive seven-course menu for a gala attended
by 650 guests in the adjacent part of the hall. The
following month, the space took on a whole new look
to host the European championship of the Japanese
trading card game Yu-Gi-Oh! Shortly thereafter,
­hundreds of athletes competed for the world title in
Kimura Shukokai Karate in the very same space.
And in August, Convention Hall I was turned into a
disco for the Eurofurence in which dozens of people in
fanciful animal costumes, fondly referred to as
­“Furries”, entered a dance competition in the hopes
of winning over a jury and 1,200 spectators.
It goes without saying that we at the Estrel Berlin
are just as adept at providing you with customised
offsite catering and live entertainment. In the
coming pages, we’ll tell you how some of our cus-
tomers got to experience this for themselves in
great summer fashion, high above the rooftops of
Berlin. We’ll also review recent special events, pre-
sent you with an overview of those to come, and
speak with producer Bernhard Kurz for an exclusive­
look into the show business as “Stars in Concert”
­celebrated its 19th anniversary.

Subaru Deutschland: Unter dem Motto „Direkt ins Ziel“ präsentierte der japanische Allradspezialist im März 2016 in
der Convention Hall II des Estrel den 525 Händlerpartnern die Facelifts seiner aktuellen PKW-Modelle und informierte
die Teilnehmer über zukünftige Vertriebs- und Marketingstrategien.

“STARS IN CONCERT”: BERLIN APPLAUDS 19YEARS OF CONTINUED SUCCESS
Mit einer exklusiven Geburtstagsshow für 330 gela-
dene Gäste feierte Anfang September die Erfolgs-
show „Stars in Concert” ihr 19-jähriges Bestehen im
Estrel Berlin. Die international ausgezeichnete Pro-
duktion ist aus dem Berliner Entertainment-­Programm
nicht mehr wegzudenken. Neben der Show „Stars
in ­Concert“, bei der seit 1997 die weltbesten Doppel-
gänger auftreten, gibt es weitere eigene Musical- und
Show-Produktionen über Musiklegenden wie die
­Beatles, Elvis Presley, ABBA, Michael Jackson oder
Buddy Holly. Doch wie kann eine Show über so viele
Jahre bestehen? Bernhard Kurz, Produzent von
„Stars in Concert“, gibt einen exklusiven ­Einblick in
die Welt des Showbusiness.
Warum haben Sie sich 1997 entschieden eine
Doppelgänger-Show zu produzieren?
Ich wollte etwas Neues machen, etwas, dass es in
­Berlin noch nicht gab. Berlin verfügt über ein breitge-
fächertes Entertainment-Programm, wir mussten uns
also mit unserem Konzept abheben, um nicht in
­Konkurrenz zu Musicals oder anderen Theatern zu tre-
ten. Zu Beginn hatten wir auch mit Vorurteilen zu
kämpfen, denn viele dachten, dass nur der Original-­
“Stars in Concert” celebrated its 19th anniversary
in early September at the Estrel Berlin with an
­invitation-only jubilee show. The internatio-
nally acclaimed production remains one of the
great classics of Berlin‘s entertainment line-up.
In addition to “Stars in Concert”, in which the
world‘s top look-and-sound-alike artists have
been performing since 1997, the show includes
musicals about music legends like the Beatles,
­Elvis Presley, ABBA, Michael Jackson and Buddy
Holly. But how does a show continue to impress
audiences year after year? Bernhard Kurz,
­producer of “Stars in Concert”, gives us an exclu-
sive look behind the scenes.
What made you decide to produce an
impersonator show in 1997?
I wanted to do something new that has not yet
been seen in Berlin. We have an incredible variety
of entertainment here in Berlin, so we had to
stand out to not compete with the musicals or
other theatrical productions of the time. It was
an uphill battle at first, because many people
thought only original artists have something out-
standing to offer. But who‘s to say there couldn‘t
be a show with performers who look and sound just
as good as the stars themselves? Our show proves
it is possible.
What have some of the show‘s highlights been
for you personally?
For me, premieres are always incredible because
tension is high and anything can happen. The very
first “Stars in Concert” show in September 1997 was
a highlight in its own right. We had no idea how the
­audience would respond to the show. When the
first act, Coco Fletcher as Tina Turner, walked onto
the stage, the moment was indescribable and some-
thing you only really get to experience when you work
in the show business.
What does it take to be cast in “Stars in Concert”?
The performer needs to look and sound like the origi-
nal artist. Both aspects have to match for us to create
the perfect illusion. Performers who are interested
can approach us directly, but we‘ve found that we
really need to discover the best ones ourselves. That‘s
why I travel to the United States as often as I can.
Have there been any mishaps over the years?
Astonishingly, there have been no major hiccups in the
show‘s 19 years history. We have never had to cancel
a single performance, and only once has a star called
in sick. But as they say in the showbusiness, “the show
must go on”; so we improvised and made it work.
Have you personally met any of the actual stars
depicted in the show?
Yes, a great number of them, in fact. Tina Turner and
Michael Jackson, for example, were guests at the
­Estrel and have even met their “Stars in Concert”
counterparts.
You‘ve won numerous awards as a producer.
Which are you the most proud of?
I would say the “Artist Choice Award”, which was
the first honour I received in the field. I can think of
no greater praise than having the people you work
with say you are the best at what you do.
THE SHOW WILL GO ON
Künstler wirklich gut sein kann. Doch wer sagt denn,
dass ein Doppelgänger nicht ebenso gut ­singen
und aussehen kann? Mit unserer Show haben wir den
Beweis erbracht.
Was waren Ihre persönlichen Show-Highlights?
Für mich sind Premieren immer ganz besondere
­Momente, denn da ist die Spannung am größten. Die
allererste „Stars in Concert“-Show im September
1997 war ein solches Highlight. Wir wussten nicht
wie das Publikum reagieren würde. Als dann die erste
Künstlerin, Coco Fletcher als Tina Turner, die Bühne
betrat, war dies solch ein spezieller Augenblick –
einer, den man nur im Showgeschäft erleben kann.
Wie schafft man es als Künstler in die Show zu
kommen?
Die Ähnlichkeit zum Original muss vorhanden sein
und ebenso entscheidend ist der Gesang. Beides muss
passen, ansonsten kann die perfekte Illusion nicht
entstehen. Die Doppelgänger können sich bei uns
bewerben, doch die Erfahrung zeigt: Die richtig Guten
muss man finden. Dafür reise ich regelmäßig in
die USA.
What can audiences expect to see over the
next several months?
Our “Stars in Concert” Christmas show goes up at
the end of November. Then, on New Year‘s Eve, we
do two special performances, here at the Estrel:
Our big New Year‘s Eve Gala at the Estrel Congress
Center and the more intimate New Year‘s Late
Night Show in the Festival Center. After midnight,
we bring in the new year with “Rock around the
Clock”, a tribute to the founding fathers of
Rock’n’Roll. It features the sounds of Bill Haley
along with our own Buddy Holly, Johnny Cash,
­Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis.

Gab es in den 19 Jahren auch mal Show-Pannen?
Man wird sich wundern, aber in den 19 Jahren, in
denen die Show spielt, gab es bisher keine größeren
Pannen und es ist nicht eine einzige Show ausgefallen.
Es gab nur einmal eine Show, in der der Hauptdarsteller
krank geworden ist. Aber wie man so schön sagt
„The show must go on“, also haben wir kurzerhand
eine andere Show gespielt.
Haben Sie die Stars, die Sie in Ihrer Show auf
der Bühne zeigen, auch live getroffen?
Ja, ich habe viele getroffen. Tina Turner und Michael
Jackson zum Beispiel waren zu Gast im Estrel und
haben hier ihre Doppelgänger kennengelernt.
Sie sind mehrfach als Produzent ausgezeichnet
worden, über welche Auszeichnung haben Sie
sich am meisten gefreut?
Über die allererste Auszeichnung, den „Artist Choice
Award“. Hier wählen die Künstler den „Best Producer“
– was kann es schöneres geben, als von denen ­gewählt
zu werden, mit denen man arbeitet?!
Was erwartet die Zuschauer in den kommenden
Monaten?
Ende November starten wir mit unserem Christmas-
Special von „Stars in Concert“, bevor wir am Silvester-
abend zwei Shows im Estrel spielen: Die große
Silvester-Gala im Estrel Congress Center und die
­intimere Silvester-Late-Night-Show im Festival
­Center. Zum Jahresanfang stehen dann in „Rock
around the Clock“ die Gründerväter des Rock‘n‘Roll
auf der Showbühne. Neben Bill Haley begeistern
dann die Doppel­gänger von Buddy Holly, Johnny

EQUESTRIAN BALL 2016
The annual Equestrian Ball has become something
of an institution amongst riders, with last year‘s
ball attracting 500 horse enthusiasts. Taking place
on 26 November, the glamorous event primar-
ily hosts equestrians and aficionados from Berlin,
Brandenburg, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. This
year‘s featured entertainment includes acts from
the highly acclaimed show “Stars in Concert” and
a special performance in dressage and show jump-
ing care of “The Horsemen”. Equally artistic are the
delectable culinary delights prepared by our very
own Estrel Berlin chefs.

CHAMPIONS GALA 2016
On 10 December, the annual Champions Gala will
honour top athletes and look back at another
great Berlin sporting year. Prominent guests from
sports, politics, media and culture come ­together
for this exclusive awards ceremony. The four
­categories ­recognised at the event are: Berlin‘s
best male athlete, best female athlete, best team
and best coach. A first-rate entertainment program,
an international buffet and an after-party make the
Champions Gala a standout event par excellence.
CHRISTMAS CHEER
WITH THEYOUTH GOSPEL CHOIR
The Youth Gospel Choir will kick off the festive season
at the Estrel Berlin on 11 December. More than 150
enchanting voices will sing Gospel classics like “Oh
Happy Day” and “Go Tell It On The Mountain” as well
as well-known pop songs. Rounding out this musical
evening will be an exclusive performance of “Stars in
Concert” artists plus a surprise guest.
JOSÉ CARRERAS GALA –
THE FIGHT TO END LEUKAEMIA
The José Carreras Gala returns to the Estrel Congress
Center on 14 December. Last year, over 2,000 Estrel
guests attended this special event, and countless view-
ers followed the festivities on live television. With the
help of musicians from Germany and abroad such as
Herbert Grönemeyer, Peter Maffay, Die Prinzen and
David Garrett, tenor José Carreras continues his
mission to end leukaemia once and for all. Last year,
the event raised more than three million euros in
donations, enabling the José Carreras Leukaemia
Research Institute to pursue over 1,100 projects.
Ticket proceeds go directly towards the charitable
José Carreras Foundation, and the Estrel anticipates
that many big-hearted prominent guests and view-
ers will once again join Carreras in his efforts.
“SLEEP FOR FIT” –
HEALTHY SLEEP, HEALTHY LIFE
Following its successful debut in April 2016, our
in-house exhibition “sleep for fit“ returns from
17 to 19 March, 2017 to coincide with the World
Sleep Day. The fair initiated by the Estrel Berlin will
look at two core concerns in 2017: “healthy sleep”
and “back pain”. In lectures by respected sleep ex-
perts, visitors can learn the secrets of sound sleep,
what they can do for a healthy back, which mat-
tresses and pillows work best together, and which
sleeping positions provide spine relief.

REITERBALL 2016
Der jährliche Reiterball hat sich zu einer festen Insti-
tution unter Reitern etabliert. Die am 26. ­November
stattfindende Veranstaltung richtet sich an Pferde­
sportbegeisterte und Reiter aus Berlin, Brandenburg,
Sachsen und Sachsen-Anhalt. Im vergangenen Jahr
trafen sich 500 reitbegeisterte Gäste, um eine rau-

Am 10. Dezember 2016 ist es wieder soweit, im Rah-
men der Champions Gala werden Berlins Spitzen-
sportler geehrt und ausgezeichnet. Die Veranstaltung
gilt als Höhepunkt des Berliner Sportjahres, wenn
prominente Gäste aus Sport, Politik, Medien und
­Kultur zusammenkommen, um an dieser exklusiven
Preisverleihung teilzunehmen. Ausgezeichnet wird
in vier Kategorien: Berlins bester Sportler / beste

WEIHNACHTSSTIMMUNG
MIT DEMYOUTH GOSPEL CHOIR
Mit dem Auftritt des Youth Gospel Choir wird am
11. Dezember im Estrel Berlin die Weihnachtszeit
eingeläutet. Die über 150 Stimmen verzaubern das
Publikum mit Gospel-Klassikern wie „Oh Happy Day“
oder „Go Tell It On The Mountain“ sowie mit be-
kannten Popsongs. Abgerundet wird dieser musika-
lische Abend mit einem Exklusivauftritt eines „Stars in
Concert“– Künstlers sowie einem Überraschungsgast.
JOSÉ CARRERAS GALA –
DER KAMPF GEGEN LEUKÄMIE
Als eine besondere Veranstaltung gilt die José­
Carreras Gala, die am 14. Dezember erneut im Estrel
Congress Center stattfinden wird. Im vergangenen
Jahr verfolgten über 2.000 Gäste im Estrel sowie un-
zählige Fernseh-Zuschauer die große Live-TV-Gala.
Gemeinsam mit nationalen und internationalen
­Stargästen wie Herbert Grönemeyer, Peter Maffay,
Die Prinzen oder David Garrett setzte sich José
Carreras­für den Kampf gegen Leukämie ein. Allein
im letzten Jahr konnten über drei Millionen Euro
Spenden ­generiert werden mit denen die José ­Carreras
­Leu­kämie-Stiftung mittlerweile über 1.100 Projekte
­förderte. Auch 2016 erwartet das Estrel zahlreiche
prominente Gäste und Zuschauer mit Herz, die sich
für die ­Bekämpfung von Leukämie einsetzen; denn
der Ticketerlös fließt ebenfalls in die gemeinnützige
José Carreras Stiftung.
„SLEEP FOR FIT“ –
GESUND SCHLAFEN, GESUND LEBEN
Nach einer erfolgreichen Auftakt-Messe im April
2016 findet die nächste hauseigene Messe „sleep for
fit“ vom 17. bis 19. März 2017, pünktlich zum Welt-
schlaftag, statt. Die vom Estrel Berlin ausgerichtete
Messe widmet sich 2017 zwei Kernthemen: „Gesunder
Schlaf“ und „Rückenschmerz“. In Vorträgen an­
gesehener Schlafmediziner erfahren Messebesucher,
was sie selbst für einen erholsamen Schlaf und
­gesunden Rücken tun können, welche Matratzen-
Kissen-Kombi­nationen günstig sind und welche
Schlafpositionen die Wirbelsäule entlasten.
