2. My name is Thomas Dönnebrink.
I am based in Berlin and one of the Connectors of the OuiShare Network
There are actually several OuiShare Connectors here at the conference.
As OuiShare we engage ourself in the sharing economy –
or how we prefer to call it - the collaborative economy.
We mostly got attracted and pulled in by its non-commercial, bottom-up and P2P nature –
I use the term collaborative economy 1.0. for this first phase of the sharing economy
Then we got increasingly concerned with rapid comercialization and exploitation
of the collaborative economy and the ascent of platform capitalism.
A development I describe as collaborative economy 2.0.
In this context I got to know Trebor at his talk:
"Platform cooperativism vs. the sharing economy"
at the Rosa-Luxenburg-Foundation in Berlin in July of 2015.
I found his framing highly interesting and decided to get involved in the unfolding
platformcooperativsm movement, as a countermovement to platform capitalism.
I proposed the term "collaborative economy 3.0"
to describe this new next stage of development.
4. What follows now is: a rapid fire presentation of the activities we have done
in the name of PlatformCoopBerlin and other presentations
I have done to spread the word and carry the torch ignited here last year.
I will close with a summary, learnings from these events, evalution
of the status quo and a look at the next events planned.
My first contribution to the spreading the ideas of platform cooperatism was to
contribute examples of German cooperativism and platfrom coop examples from
around Europe at the lunch session with Michel Bauwens at last years conference.
In the headline of these slides you will find the date, location and name of the event.
Below you will find some photos or a program screen shot to give you an impression
of the attendance and context of the event.
And if documentation is available there an indication on the bottom left of the slide.
For this first event for example you can view and download the presentation at slideshare.
Here you can see some figures about the amount of views and downloads.
I will also make today's presentation available on slideshare.

17. I was invited as a collaborative economy expert to contribute to two workshops of the
European Commission. Together with other OuiShare connectors, we were able to
inject platformcooperativism ideas and concepts into what otherwise would have been
a very collaborative economy 2.0 centred discussion. Here some pictures of the first
workshop in Stockholm with about 30 contributors. And here the second workshop in
Berlin about two months later with around 25 contributors.

21. The first PlatformCoopBerlin event was held at our main event location
called Supermarkt together with Michel Bauwens.
Given the deep interest of the 40 participants
we invested a good amount of time into a well designed 12 page document
with useful links and additional information.
This effort paid off as you can see here:
6600+ views and more than 160 downloads.
Learning: if you have an interesting, successful event,
take the time and resources to document it well.

23. Our idea was to offer a platformcoop event every six weeks
inviting the community to dynamise the event series.
The second platformcoopBerlin was hosted by fairmondo.
15+ participants learned about this platformcoop
and how to avoid the venture capital trap.

a newly developing platform looking to support a fairer P2P work organisation
and new cooperative financing models.
Coliga talked about purpose ownership and the rooted internet fund they belong to,
explainging why this model is more beneficial for both consumers and companies

31. GETDecentralized, is a local OuiShare event, where coders, hackers and scientists
get together to explore decentralized concepts and technologies.
The 4th GetDecedntrilised event had a track on platform cooperativism and
continued the lively debate started at the first platformcoop berlin event:
decentralized networks vs. centralized platforms.
The organiser of the GETD event series is also attending this conference.

35. Our biggest PlatformCoop Event to date reached over 80 people.
The tent size limited the participation, but interest was much higher.
The workshop was titled "Return of the Co-op: Building the Next-Generation Sharing
Economy" and took place at the 4th OuiShareFest in Paris.
The session consisted of five, five minute presentations by different platform coops
and aspirants from the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Germany,
followed by three rounds of five break-out groups moderated by invited experts.
These groups were invited to brainstorm: Governance / relationship between platform
& user / values & distribution / business model, finance & technology / mutualization.
at the end the groups presented their ideas.

at an event of the German Academy of Cooperatives drew 25+ participants -
predominantely from the cooperative bank world.

56. Events summary &
some learnings
Total 22 events: 600 participants – reaching 10,000+
Take-aways
1. Need of explaining but encountering interest
(not yet immediately going viral, but constantly increasing).
2. Gathering some interested people around a table with some good food
get‘s you started.
3. Start your own PlatformCoopX group for your region
(ask for forgiveness and use Facebook & Co for quick start and fast reach for now).
4. Take the time/resources to document/distribute well successful events.
(-> Resource problem: hope tthe Platform Coop Consortium will be able to help here)
57. To close let me present a short summary and the key learnings from these events.
I presented you 22 events which together had over 600 participants, averaging around 25 to 30
each occasion.
1. Take-away: Platform cooperativism need some explaining but they do find an interested
audience. Not yet immediately going viral, but we do see a constantly increasing interest and
awareness.
2. Take-away: You might remember the attractivly placed, delicious paella and some happy faces
on the Madrid session pictures: it doesn't take much to get started, a group of people around a
table with good food and drinks, is a good platform to start discussion. So just do it.
3. Take-away: Suggesting to start your own PlatformCoopX group for your region on Facebook. I
know we want to leave FB & Co behind, but until then we might as well use them for quick start
and fast dissemination.
4. Take-away: If you have an interesting, successful event take the time and resources to document
it well. Documentation and dissemination in any form helps to build awareness. Even though we
published just some presentations - mainly on slideshare - we have reached over 10,000 people
this way - judging by the views and downloads. We could have done more here, but as always time
and resources are limited. I hope that the Platform Coop Consortium will be able to give a boost
here.
Little by little the bird builds its nest. And we have done so during the last year.
58. What are policy & coops doing?
2016-01-2 @Politische Linke SPD
59. Nevertheless so far mainly bottom-up.
When I attended an event at the house of representatives of the German parlament
which was dedicated to coops and the reform of cooperative laws
none of the participants from various political parties, ministries or coop association
brought up online business, collaborative economy or platformcooperativsm.
It wasn't even mentioned once.
http://www.parlamentarische-linke.de/genossenschaftstagung
60. What are policy & coops doing?
2016-09-21 @Netpolitical Congress/Green
Fotos: https://www.gruene-bundestag.de/index.php?id=440047
61. The recent netpolitical congress of the German Green party started to ask the right questions like:
Who is developing the new technologies?
What motivates them?
What biases do they have.
But as Joachim Lohmann, who attended the event, reported
platformcooperativism wasn't discussed yet.
62. What is science & research doing?
2016 @ Coop
Exception:
Quintessence is:
The policy, science & the cooperative (associations)
are sleeping away the development, possibilities
and potentials. But looks like they are about to
wake up.
63. So what about academia in Germany/Europe?
Esther Schmitt, initiator of the PlatformCoopValencia group, had attended two coop related
academic conferences this year: the research conference of the international cooperative alliance
as well as the consortium of cooperative science institutes but also she reports that even in this
context collaborative economy, online business and platform cooperativism wasn't discussed.
Our experience over the past year indicates the platform cooperative ideas have not yet reached
the political or scientific establishments or cooperative associations. But there is hope as we are
starting to receive the first inquiries and reach-outs for information.
A laudable exception in Germany is the Goethe-Institute which has staged 12 events around the
world under the slogan: "sharing and bartering", including platformcoop topics like a panel
discussion here in NYC. ...

67. So what's next?
We are just planning the next Berlin PlatformCoop Event.
This time a full two days on the 9./10.December. under the title "PlatformCoops - Start your Own".
Originally planned was just a workshop, but due to great interest
it is turning into a bigger event and an important milestone.
On the first day there will be over a dozen presentations under the themes:
"We are already a platformcoop",
"We want to become a platform coop",
"We support cooperative businesses",
"What platformcoops need?".
Each presenter is invited to bring a challenge they want to share with the audience for
collaborative problem solving.
On the second day there will be several panel discussions and workshops including
#Pentagrowth, #platformdesigntoolkit #Sharetribe #decentralized multi-purpose platforms,
#smart-coop, #fairbnb and other platformcoop initiative. Please check out the program.
A bigger conference in Germany/Europe is projected for spring 2017.
69. Throughout these events we have experimented with various workshop formats
and are happy to share experiences with you.
If you are interested in one of these upcoming events
or have further questions concerning the previous events and our experience,
please talk to me later or contact me via any of the following channels.
On the following two slides you will find links to all events and available documentation.
