VMware believes that IT organizations need to move to a software-defined approach to cost-effectively and competitively serve internal and external customers.
I would like to give you a brief overview of VMware’s strategy for helping IT organizations become more efficient and responsive, and what this means to you and your business.
Legacy silos, built around a hardware-centric approach, drain IT resources and prevent IT from serving the business at the speed of business. These hardware-defined approaches have so significantly compromised IT’s ability to serve up applications to the business efficiently that many businesses have opted to pursue options outside of their traditional IT organizations. Meanwhile, these organizations are stuck managing yesterday’s inefficient operational silos, and are unable to free up the resources necessary to invest in innovation that truly impacts strategic value, and ultimately impact the bottom line.
Our goal is to help customers break down legacy silos and provide a common computing platform for all applications, today and tomorrow, based on a highly automated software-defined data center architecture. This includes a common cloud management approach that embraces and provides transparent governance of infrastructure and software-as-a-service components, even those that are outside of traditional IT control.
Gartner estimates that only 30 percent of IT’s budgets today are going into new innovation.
And the reason is that apps are slow, device management consumes too much, provisioning is too slow, infrastructure is too brittle and heavy …all of these reasons bog IT down with the responsibility of maintaining the status quo, instead of innovating for the future.
<click>
VMware customers do significantly better than this, applying 40 percent of their IT budget to innovation.
<click>
But our goal is to move our customers to a 50/50 model – 50% on maintenance and 50% on innovation. At this point, IT goes from being a ball and chain to becoming a powerful tool where apps are self-service and rolled out at the speed of business; where IT becomes an asset to accelerate business opportunities for the future.
Through a recent benchmark study with our customers, we know that roughly 1/3 of our customers have already shifted to this 50/50 investment model where they are freeing up resources to increase investments in innovation.
This is our goal. Our commitment to our customers. When our customers can devote 50% of their budgets to innovation we will have progressed significantly in transforming IT into an agile, high performing asset for the business.
What is the hybrid cloud? For us, it’s any app, any place, no compromise.
With that common management, the same management tools you use on-premise, you can manage workloads off-premise. The networking doesn’t change, the IP addresses never change, the network policies don’t change, the security mechanisms don’t change. Common support mechanisms—it is a seamless extension of your on-premise data center to the public cloud.
We believe this is what you need for your businesses, your customers, and your internal users. And as line of business and DevOps are exploring public cloud, this is a way for you to satisfy those needs without compromising SLAs, governance, and regulatory requirements—delivering VMware software both public and private, and tying them together.
In addition to our rich ecosystem of Service Provider partners, offering vCloud hybrid services around the globe, we have just announced the general availability of VMware vCloud Hybrid Service— now generally available in some markets to our customers and partners,
VMware is uniquely positioned to become a genuine global leader in providing public cloud services, thanks to the combination of VMware’s technology stack, our unique hybrid service offerings, and our rich ecosystem of service providers.
The vCloud Hybrid Service is your cloud. It allows you to enable the business’s use of the public cloud, and its benefits, without compromising the needs of IT, such as regulation and SLAs.
At VMware, we are committed to delivering a virtualization model that builds on your existing investments – a rip and replace approach to transforming the data center is simply not an option for our customers. And furthermore, because virtualization is at the hub of transforming not just compute, but networking and storage, the skills you have honed over the last decade are highly relevant to the transformation journey ahead. VMware allows you to leverage your EXISTING skills in compute virtualization and apply them to new dimensions of the data center, namely networking and storage.
VMware’s strategy is grounded in leveraging your existing investments in both infrastructure and people.
With mainframes things were easy. There was one group which took care the whole operations. Communication took place within that group and that made changes easy too. At that time it wasn’t called that way, but one see this as a Center of Excellence<CLICK>

With complex IT-Architectures came the silos we see in most companies today. There are the windows guys, the unix guys, the linux guys, network, storage and application development. Usually none of them talk to each other so when changes are done most often something goes horribly wrong. That’s why <CLICK> ....

- The Cloud Center of Excellence comprises of Compute-, Storage- and Network-Admins, Security- and Application-Architects. It acts as a broker of internal and external compute resources
Many great companies are joining VMware on this journey to becoming a Software-Defined Enterprise. These are just some of the businesses that have adopted VMware technology and a software-defined approach to IT service delivery.
These companies have started with core compute virtualization solutions from VMware and have evolved, adding management & automation and cloud computing and are now delivering self-service applications to their end users.
VMware continued its journey to a software-defined enterprise in 2012, when we launched our own private cloud. Since then, we’ve hit several milestones.
We’ve seen provisioning times go from weeks to hours through the automation of the SDLC (Software Development Life Cycle) environment, and even improved our own Lab environments at VMworld.
We’ve also seen significant cost reduction which has driven increased bandwidth and freed up creative capacity that has allowed us to launch the vCloud Hybrid Service.
We’ve accomplished this while our capacity to serve the business has grown exponentially.
Our service engagement teams can work with you to evolve your IT service delivery to take full advantage of a software-defined environment, so you can realize the agility and efficiency benefits of a Software-Defined Enterprise.
Meeting to understand requirements in 24 hours, not instance in 24 hours
