mountains. This is Lake Achen, the „Achensee“, a
paradise of sport and leisure in the Tyrolean Alps.
Günther Hlebaina has run Das Kronthaler here for
several years. In the interview, the visionary hote-
lier talks about his love of sport, longing and desi-
re, and the power of the Alps.
According to your website, „longing“ was behind
the establishment of „Das Kronthaler“. What exact-
ly do you mean by that?
There is a story behind „Das Kronthaler“. We ran the
place as a family hotel for many years. A great pla-
ce, but with a very narrow market. We kept losing
guests when the children got to their teens, becau-
se the young people didn‘t want to come to a „chil-
dren‘s“ hotel any more. We began to wish that we
were able to keep our guests for longer. We sought
to create a new type of hotel to expand our range
of accommodation - and we succeeded.
What does „longing“, „desire“, mean to you
personally?
My primary role is that of a hotelier. I am a „front
man“ and often work directly with our customers.
My „desire“ is to ensure 100% satisfaction for our
guests, and to offer them entertainment and inspi-
ration. Indeed, that is part of our hotel philosophy.
You goal in planning was „Back to our roots“.
How far is it possible to live out that goal of au-
thenticity in a modern hotel?
Roots and authenticity can mean a number of things.
In the hotel itself, we have kept or uncovered a num-
ber of original features. For example, you can see the
rock formation on which the hotel stands. The name
is also a return to the hotel‘s roots. Das Kronthaler
comes from the people who erected the first secti-
on of the building, Christine and Ottmar Kronthaler.
Much of the material that we have used is also origi-
nal. We have tried not to go too far afield, and have
largely used locally sourced materials. These are as-
pects that are important to us.
How do you reconcile design with authenticity?
Quite easily, in my view. The hotel design now is one
of clear lines and simple forms, just as it used to be.
Traditional hostelries tended to be fairly plain, not or-
nate or kitschy. So you see, tradition and modernity
have in a way now merged.
What does authenticity mean to you personally?
I am someone who is interested in the past, even if I
am focused on the future and moving forwards. Where
I come from is important to me. I am from Styria, those
are my roots, that is my home region, and I will never
forget that.
Your website describes nature as a source of ener-
gy. How can nature‘s energy be harnessed, both
within and outside the hotel?
I believe that the atmosphere we have created in the
hotel is itself energising. I like to quote the guests who
tell me that even entering the hotel is something spe-
cial. There are people with a great feel for such things
who can sense that energy. For my own part, I find the
ambience extremely pleasant. Beyond the hotel walls,
the magic is in the location. The hills, the dense forest
and the lake – just the view itself is a source of energy
to me.
What leisure activities do guests here most enjoy?
We have an absolute wealth of options. There are the
mountains for hillwalking and rock climbing at altitudes
of 2500 m. But there is also lots to do down below in
the valley. Breathtaking cycle routes, running and wal-
king, golfing, and a host of water sports on the lake - in
short, our guests are never short of activities!
Spa options are of course also on offer?
Absolutely, in fact probably the best option is to com-
bine sporting activities with our great spa services.
That is the perfect way truly to relax after all that exer-
cise. However, we are definitely not setting ourselves
up as spa hotel in the strict sense of word – that is not
what we are, our clientèle is quite simply younger. Our
guests are full of energy, and while they may not be all
young, they are young at heart.
Do your guests agree that luxury lies not in the
exclusive but in the natural?
Absolutely. I think we are seeing the dawn of a new
era, an era in which people will notice and value the
simple things in life much more than they used to.
Where the focus was once on ever greater luxury, I
believe we are now increasingly returning to simplicity
and to nature.
You mentioned before that you enjoy sports. Do
you see sport as part of spa and health activities?
Yes, indeed I do. I was a ski instructor and skier for
many years, so skiing is up there as one of my top
favourite sports. But summer sports are also import-
ant. I find great inspiration in running; it is my way of
blowing the cobwebs away. A run can also become an
energetic walk depending on your mood. These are all
ways in which I can genuinely relax and find inspiration
for new projects.
How would you define the alpine way of life?
I would say it is defined by a certain unassuming sim-
plicity, a practical outlook on life and an appreciation
of things like good service. That to me is the essence
of the alpine way of life.

As is well known the Alps boast several superla-
tives. Majestic and magic can only probably be
justifiably used for just one alpine area though,
the Salzkammergut. On the one hand it is quite

This dry fact scarcely captures its essence in real life

just the case nowadays but has applied since the very

Natural and cultural wealth ...
Gentle meadows and expansive mountain forests
swing high up around the majestic Dachstein, vast
alpine pastures and crystal clear mountain lakes
nestle in between. The flora in the alpine region is
second to none and the fauna is similarly diverse.
The result: lakes and mountain ridges stretching over
the extremely magical fog, glistening glaciers, lush
meadows of flowers under the bleak majesty of the
high-alpine Dachstein – this extreme diversity in a
small space displays its copious amazing charms to
the full. Spectacular viewing platforms on the Krip-
penstein, like the legendary “5fingers”, “Welterbespi-
rale” or the “Dachstein Hai”, are easy to hike to but
guarantee an adrenaline rush nevertheless, at the
very highest level. However, there’s not just quite a
bit on offer up the mountain but also in the mountain:
the Giant Ice Cave, Mammoth Cave and underground
water cascades in the Koppenbrüller Cave are as just
spectacular as they are breathtaking. Tradition and
customs are just as much a part of the Dachstein Salz-
kammergut holiday region as the mountains, lakes and
caves. As the inhabitants in this region preserve a cultural
world heritage: with its actual living traditions, with histori-
cal craftsmanship and with music that is not “folksy” at all
but totally authentic.
... in abundance
People had already grasped the special magic of this re-
gion roughly 3,000 years ago. They settled in the region
around Hallstatt and gave their name to an entire period:
following historical finds in a very large cemetery above
Hallstatt one period during the Early Ice Age (800 to 450
BC) was given the name the Hallstatt Culture. Valuable
archaeological finds from this period can be viewed at the
Hallstatt World Heritage Museum throughout the year.
Since the Bronze Age people have been using another
treasure though, literally the salt of the earth. Nowadays
this allows for exciting excursions, for example to the “Man
in Salt” (a 2,000-year old mummy) in Hallstatt’s salt worlds.
Salt, “white gold”, has given this isolated area great eco-
nomic importance as well as considerable cultural power
over the centuries, this can be seen for example by the
houses’ attractive architecture and their typical wooden
decorations. It is therefore also no surprise that Hallstatt
together with the Dachstein and the interior Salzkammer-
gut region around the idyllic towns of Bad Goisern, Gosau,
Hallstatt and Obertraun was declared a UNESCO World
Heritage Site in 1997.

“Our concept is rooted in sustainability, and that must
be reflected in practice. We benefit from nature, and
owe nature our investment in return,” says Florian Par-
tel, manager of Gradonna Mountain Resort. The hotel
is a low-energy house and the suites and chalets are
made completely of wood. Almost all work on the ho-
tel from erecting the shell to fitting the interior was car-
ried out by firms from East Tyrol. In winter, CO²-neut-
ral wood chip heating with an auxiliary solar collector
keeps guests warm and cosy. On the hillside above
the hotel is a spring which has been developed to sup-
ply the entire hotel with fresh spring water. The sus-
tainability concept is reflected in the style of the hotel.
Not only does the mountains, but the mountains also,
in a manner of speaking, lie in the hotel. “Where the
Gradonna now stands, there were once huge boul-
ders. The boulders were chiselled, cut and polished
and laid in the foyer”, explains Florian Partel. A simple,
successful and authentic way to bring the essence of
the region into the hotel. Despite its modern design,
the entire façade is shingled, and that is style typical
of the region. Inside, the focus is on natural materials.
The woollen rugs in the lobby and lodencovered sea-
ting are traditional features often encountered in the
Alps. Imported flowers are nowhere to be seen. Large
glass sections reveal and frame the natural landscape,
which needs no further ornamentation.

You offer a range of accommodation options. What

tel is open all year round and caters to all guests‘
needs. Just a five minute walk away is our Landhaus
am Teich, our „apartments on the pong“. Guests can
choose from one of six apartments for a quiet, restful
stay beside beautiful lawns and a natural swimming
pool. The house is between the centre of the village
and the golf course, and winter guests are right besi-
de the cross-country ski trail, which is lit at night. Our
Landhaus im Garten – country house and garden,

Maria Alm and the Hochkönig – what makes this
area special?
There are so many beautiful places in Austria. Here
in the heart of Salzburg, we are in such an impressi-
vely vast and mighty landscape, with Lake Zell, the
Lofer Mountains, the Salzburg Slate Alps, the Steiner-
nes Meer plateau and the Hochkönig – there is space
and freedom here, unlike in some valleys. And when
you then discover this traditional village with its pointy
church spire, the highest in the region, you feel like
you have come home – as if you have arrived in the

ARCHITECTURE
NEW CHALLENGES NEED NEW DESIGNS
White walls, almost black timbering, and two or
three storeys high – a typical Alpine house. Yet in
some areas, this style of building has changed si-
gnificantly over recent years. Strict planning re-
gulations in the Alpine valleys once dictated the
type of roof and its pitch, and required white stone
walls and a timbering for the upper storey. In many
places, these regulations now no longer apply. The
traditional model used for so many decades have
now been redeveloped in typical regional style,
and a whole new style of building has been born.
Saalbach Hinterglemm, Salzburg: The starting point for
both traditional and modern buildings is the „Einhof“ or
„Eindachhof“ farmhouse, where the living quarters and
farm are in one building. Throughout the Alps and in
particular in the broader valleys, this type of farm was
the predominant architectural style. The Einhof form has
been changing and developing since the 16th century.
Faced with the region‘s changeable and unsettled we-
ather, locals needed a way of keeping dry as they mo-
ved between the different parts of the farmstead. The
solution was to put everything in one building: kitchen,
bedroom, cowshed, grain store and hay store.
The upper storeys of an „Einhof“ were made of local tim-
ber such as larch or birch. Timber was and is a funda-
mental Alpine building material. It weathers well and is
readily available. Buildings that draw on the Einhof sty-
le make great use of timber, both inside and out. „Our
beds are made of untreated Arolla pine, which lowers
the pulse rate and helps ensure deep sleep“, explains
Alexander Schwabl, manager of the Alpin Juwel hotel in
Saalbach-Hinterglemm.
The regional style inspired by the Einhof can also been
seen in the of the basic design of the Alpin Juwel: the
gable roof, a dark wood shingle façade, the white walls
of the lower storeys and the typical balconies that would
have been passageways in a 19th century Einhof. This
typical Saalbach-Hinterglemm building was given a mo-
dern extension in 2012. „Our job was to bring together
the old and new so that they complemented rather than
clashed with each other“, says Christian Althaler from the
architecture firm Moritz und Haselsberger.
Unlike some other municipalities in Pinzgau, Saal-
bach-Hinterglemm is extremely open to modern buil-
dings. The new Alpin Juwel extension was not the first
modern building in the town, but it was certainly the lar-
gest. „New challenges need new designs. In the past,
people used familiar, traditional structures, and over time
have adapted these structures to the tourist trade“, ex-
plains Althaler.
Familiar and traditional, yet modern: that was part of the
concept for the new Alpin Juwel. As in traditional, rustic
buildings, the main focus was on natural materials for
both interior and exterior. The new extension was built
entirely of timber, and that included the load-bearing
walls. Here, too, a key feature was the shingle façade in
untreated larch.
A less traditional feature is the extending sections of the
façade - a result of the hillside location. These unique
features give a panoramic view of the Kitzbühel Alps and
the centre of Saalbach-Hinterglemm.

Draw the first line on a slope covered in deep powder
snow for once, on the sunny white surrounded by impres-
sive rock formations. Passionate freeriders who harbour
these kinds of dreams are in just the right place at the
Bergland Hotel Sölden. As the hotel’s boss, Sigi Grüner, is
not just a three times synchronized skiing world champion
but also a five times powder snow world champion. He
knows every single downhill slope in the surrounding area,
in fact you could say every single flake. “I am also happy
to share this knowledge with my guests with a welcome
cocktail on Sunday or on the slope,” emphasises Grüner.
Once a week in winter season the Bergland Hotel offers its
guests a ski safari, led by the boss and/or other Bergland
guides. Not only are the peaks named and mountain inns
visited but anyone who has completed a ski safari knows
more about the different types of snow afterwards than
ever before. The route leads over the entire region from the
gentle Giggijoch to the challenging Gaislachkogel, where

However, you don’t have to tackle the “krumpe Rinne” stra-

ing and cross-country skiing, curling, night skiing under a
starry sky, ice climbing on frozen waterfalls in nearby Um-
hausen or boarding in the Sölden snow park, which enti-
ces you with jibs, jumps, rails and tubes. Guests who pre-
fer approaching things very calmly can borrow Swarovski
binoculars from the Bergland Hotel Sölden and start their
day on holiday with a (snowshoe) hike along the “quiet side
of Sölden”. With a bit of luck and patience you will catch a
glimpse of deer and wild hares. The winter mountain bre-

Roland Ballner, owner of the Cortisen am Wolfgangsee,
experienced a wave of outrage in 2005 due to his ”no
kids” philosophy, which was unique back then. Only chil-
dren aged 12 and over are allowed in his hotel. Ten years
later the idea of a childfree hotel has become totally nor-
mal and there is only ever positive feedback about his ho-
tel on the banks of Wolfgangsee: his lounge is described
as ”cigar heaven” by the Cigar Journal, a trip out with the
hotel‘s own Harley Davidson is called legendary by Vip
Traveller.
”The reporting back then never did us any harm, in fact
quite the opposite,” recalls Roland Ballner. People in
particular who work with children all day, for example
teachers or child carers, have been booking at Cortisen
since then. And of course parents who want to treat
themselves to a few days away from the children with
maximum relaxation.
From the outside the Cortisen embodies the typical
Salzkammergut style with its mullion and transom de-
sign, but guests have entered a very different world
at the very latest when they‘re standing at reception:
bright, trendy colours combined with dark leather sofas
reminiscent of the Colonial style. Ballner: ”My hotel is
designed just how I like it. I offer my guests all the things
here that are important to me on my own holiday.” This
personal touch is consistent throughout the hotel and
beyond – here the boss personally drives the motorbo-
at and teaches his guests how to water ski.
