Overview of the basic structure, goals and activities of the International Institute for Archival Science of Trieste and Maribor (IIAS)

Durch die Beteiligung vieler ausländischer Archivare wurde der Beschluss gefasst, ein internationales Archivinstitut zu begründen mit dem Schwerpunkt im Balkan-Donau-Raum. The IIAS originates in the "Centre for Technical and Professional Problems in Archives", that was established in 198 5 . With many foreign archivists the decision has been made to establish an international archival institute, mainly focusing on the Balkan-Danube region.

Besides the annual Conferences, at the start different initiatives and projects defined the activities of IIAS.

Offizielle Sprachen sind: Englisch, Italienisch und Slowenisch The Institute now has 21 members: Austria, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada, China, Croatia, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Montenegro, Poland, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Ukraine. The official languages are: English, Italian and Slovene.

Neben den offiziellen Mitgliedern (je Mitgliedsland eine Person) gibt es auch mehrere Ehrenmitglieder ( Gerhard PFERSCHY , Karoly KECSKEMETI, Michel DUCHEIN, Hermann RUMSCHÖTTEL, Ugo COVA ). The Director is the highest representative of the IIAS. The Executive Board consists of 5 members. Besides the official members (one per member country), there are many honourable members ( Gerhard PFERSCHY, Karoly KECSKEMETI, Michel DUCHEIN, Hermann RUMSCHÖTTEL, Ugo COVA ).

11. www. iias-trieste-maribor.eu e.mail: info@iias-trieste-maribor.eu Seit 2007 wird eine internationale Archivschule durchgeführt, die im Zusammenhang mit der Konferenz des IIAS in Triest stattfindet. Es handelt sich um einen postgradualen Kurs. Zu den Themen gehören aktuelle Probleme der Archivwissenschaft, Fragen der Digitalisierung und digitaler Daten sowie auch das internationale Archivrecht. Die Schule wird vor allem von Teilnehmern aus Mittel- und Osteuropa besucht, sie geht über drei Jahre (dreimal ein Herbstkurs). Since 2007, an International Archival School is conducted. It takes place within the Conference of the IIAS in Trieste. It is a postgraduate study course and it covers topical problems in the archival field, questions about the digitalisation and digital data and the international archival legislation. The school is attended by participants from Central and Eastern Europe and lasts for three years (3-times an Autumn School).

Zuletzt hatten wir ca. 200 Teilnehmer. Daneben hat das Institut die Notwendigkeit erkannt, ein terminologisches Glossar in zahlreichen Sprachen zu machen. "Short dictionary of archival terminology" (derzeit umfasst es 21 Sprachen). Together with the Autumn School the Annual Meeting of the IIAS in Trieste and the International Archival Day take place. The last time we had approx. 200 participants. The Institute realized the urge to prepare a terminology glossary in many languages i.e. "Short dictionary of archival terminology" that to date comprises 21 languages.

15. www. iias-trieste-maribor.eu e.mail: info@iias-trieste-maribor.eu Seit einiger Zeit wird auch eine internationale Fachmesse im Rahmen des Archivtags veranstaltet, an der sich Firmen aus dem Umfeld der Archivtechnik und Digitalisierung beteiligen können. Das IIAS betreibt auch ein Online-Forum zu Themen der Archivwissenschaft. Es ist ein virtueller Platz, an dem die Mitglieder und andere Gäste sich zu aktuellen Fragen austauschen können. For a short period of time now, an International Fair is being held within the Archival Day, where companies from the field of archival technology and digitalisation can participate. The IIAS also has an online forum on archival science. It is a virtual place, where members and other guests can exchange topical questions.

Das IIAS lädt alle Archivare und Kollegen herzlich zu den jährlichen Treffen in Triest ein. Das Institut verfügt über eine langjährige Erfahrung im Umgang zwischen den Kollegen vieler Länder, auch außerhalb der Europäischen Union. Es ist offen für Kooperationen und gemeinsame Projekte mit anderen Instituten und Forschungszentren There is also an open mailing list for topical messages and information. The IIAS is kindly inviting all archivists and colleagues to attend the Annual Meeting in Trieste. The Institute has long-year experience with many colleagues from different countries, also beyond the EU. It is open to cooperation and mutual projects with other institutes and research centres.
