"If it is for the sake of being different, for the sake of being colorful or for the pleasure to shock; if it is for a joke, a trick, a motif; if it is not for the love of humanity, if it does not illuminate our eye nor does it nourish our soul, then we shall never design."

At the last International Furniture Fair in
Shanghai, the showroom of a new brand
attracted attention with its clear style and
a poetic inscription on the wall.
“If it is for the sake of being different, for
the sake of being colorful or for the pleas-
ure to shock; if it is for a joke, a trick, a
motif; if it is not for the love of humanity,
if it does not illuminate our eye nor does
it nourish our soul, then we shall never
design.”
Thus it reads on the showroom wall of the
new ‘1ness’ brand, which presented an ex-
hibition curated by architect and designer
Chi Wing Lo under the motto of “We shall
not design if...”.The exhibition aims at hav-
ing us reflect on what a designer today is
confronted with, who is well aware of his
or her cultural responsibility.This message
is particularly current at a time when
China begins to invest heavily in the pro-
motion of design. In his exhibition, Chi
Wing Lo uses ink stones. With them he
hopes to illustrate an intellectually sustain-
able approach while also giving absolute
priority to sensibility in design.
Modern, not trendy
In contrast to the loss of proportionality
and the arbitrariness of the exhibits out-

side, this tiny enclosed space looks like a
retreat, an oasis, offering visitors a quiet
moment away from the hustle and bustle
outside. Only a few light sources penetrate
the darkness, lighting up only the ink
stones‘ contours.The distinctive monochro-
matic ambience has a contemplative and
introspective effect. Just like Chi Wing Lo’s
designs. They are elegant, modern and of
a timeless aestheticism, but in no way
trendy.
With his Greek-Chinese background, Chi
Wing Lo is today regarded as a typical
representative of a combination of Far-
Eastern aestheticism and contemporary
taste. He recently explained his views on
China’s cultural genes. His inspirations in-
clude images of the terraces inYunnan, the
cormoran fishermen, the boat trackers, the
embroidery girls… In his eyes, wisdom, pa-
tience, dedication, inventiveness, serenity
and contentment are the outstanding
national Chinese traits. But he does not
want to simply copy Chinese symbols and
shapes; instead he aims at reawakening
the sentiment and wisdom inherent in
them.
Chi Wing Lo founded ‘1ness’ to make his
works accessible to us, which were inspired
by unique traditional materials and tech-
niques that have been passed on to our
generation. His objects raise the question:
“How can we explore new potentials and
develop new perspectives and opportun-
ities at a defined moment and time and
by using an established process?”
Lo examines conventional products with
much attention and empathy. He wishes
that his designs help to rejuvenate a craft
that is at risk of falling into oblivion by
bringing it closer to our current require-
ments and the modern zeitgeist. He hopes
that his rigorous reinterpretations, however
restricted they may be by set perimeters,
can propel forward more viable alter-
natives. Just as he sees his architecture
and furniture design, Lo wants the every-
day objects in our homes to occupy a
special place and have a positive effect on
our living and dwelling.

one decisive advantage when compared
with the online world. The world of

two-dimensionally on a screen but in a
sensually perceptible spatial dramaturgy.
Once in retail trade everything was fine in
the proverbial sense of the word. On the
one side of the counter there was the
dealer who had a clear mandate to sell,
on the other the (potential) customer
with an idea to purchase something. Both
reached an agreement and finally
exchanged the product for money.A
simple principle, which basically still works
like this today. Only the distribution chan-

Während der letzten International

Showroom einer neuen Marke
Aufmerksamkeit.

unter dem Motto “We shall not design
if ...” eine von Architekt und Designer
Chi Wing Lo kuratierte Ausstellung
präsentierte. Die Ausstellung will zum
Nachdenken anregen darüber, womit
sich ein seiner kulturellen Verantwor-
tung bewusster Designer heute
konfrontiert sieht. Die Botschaft ist
besonders aktuell zu einem Zeitpunkt,
an dem China beginnt, massiv in die
Designförderung zu investieren.
Chi Wing Lo inszeniert in seiner Aus-
stellung Tuschesteine.An ihnen hofft er,
einen intellektuell nachhaltigen Ansatz
deutlich machen zu können, der
zugleich gestalterischer Sensibilität ab-
solute Priorität einräumt.
Im Gegensatz zumVerlust der Maßstäb-
lichkeit und der Beliebigkeit der Expo-
nate draußen wirkt dieser winzige, in
sich geschlossene Raum wie ein Rück-
zugsort, eine Oase, die dem Besucher
einen ruhigen Moment abseits des
geschäftigen Treibens bietet. Wenige
Lichtquellen durchdringen die Dunkel-
heit, sie beleuchten nur die Konturen
durch einen etablierten Prozess neue
Potenziale ausloten und neue Perspek-
tiven und Möglichkeiten entwickeln?”
Lo schenkt konventionellen Produkten
viel Aufmerksamkeit und Empathie. Er
möchte, dass seine Designs dazu beitra-
gen, eine Handwerkskunst wieder zu
beleben, die droht, in Vergessenheit zu
geraten, indem er sie näher an unsere
heutigen Bedürfnisse und den aktuellen
Zeitgeist heranführt. Und er hofft, dass
seine rigorosen Neuinterpretationen,
so begrenzt sie auch durch vorgege-
bene Parameter sein mögen, sinnvolle
Alternativen voranbringen können. So
wie Lo seine Architektur und sein
Möbeldesign betrachtet, so möchte er,
dass die Alltagsobjekte in unseren

die Entwürfe von Chi Wing Lo. Sie sind

Ästhetik, aber in keiner Weise modisch.
Modern,nichtmodisch
Mit seinem griechisch-chinesischen
Hintergrund gilt Chi Wing Lo heute als
beispielhafter Vertreter einer Kombina-
tion fernöstlicher Ästhetik mit moder-
nem Geschmacksempfinden.
Vor Kurzem erläuterte er seine Ansich-
ten über die kulturellen Gene Chinas.
Zu seinen Inspirationen gehören die
Bilder der Terrassen in Yunnan, der
Kormoranfischer, der Bootsführer, des
stickenden Mädchens … In seinen Au-
gen sind Weisheit, Geduld, Hingabe,
Erfindungsreichtum, Gelassenheit und
Zufriedenheit die herausragenden chi-
nesischen Nationaleigenschaften. Er
möchte aber nicht einfach chinesische
Symbole und Formen kopieren, son-
dern Gefühl und Weisheit wieder zum
Leben erwecken, die in ihnen stecken.
Chi Wing Lo hat ‘1ness’ gegründet, um
uns seine Arbeiten zugänglich zu
machen, die durch einzigartige traditio-
nelle Materialien und Techniken inspi-
riert wurden und die an unsere Gene-
ration weitergegeben worden sind.
Seine Objekte fragen: “Wie können wir
