SOMETIMES, THE SPECTACULAR STARTS SLOWLY AND QUIETLY. ON A MORNING IN THE
SALZBURG ALPS IN THE RESORT OF LEOGANG: FOREST. MOUNTAIN PASTURES. ROCK.
CRAGS. A MOUNTAIN LAKE. CLEAR SKIES. SUNSHINE. YOU TAKE A FEW DEEP BREATHS.
UNSPOILED NATURE. SILENCE. WOW! ABSOLUTE LUXURY!
SIMPLY
PURADIES
/ OPENING / SALZBURG / LEOGANG /
In 2007, the Madreiter Family took inspira-
tion from this amazing countryside and in
quiet, understated, authentic style, launched
PURADIES: 4-star chalets against the breath
taking backdrop of the Birnhorn, and at the
centre, Embachhof, the home of Pinzgau
farmers since the 17th
century. The resort has
grown over the years and now has 80 rooms
and 14 chalets – the perfect premium retreat.
Stretching over 500,000 m2
, PURADIES has
all the space and freedom needed to revita
lise the weary spirit. The landscape is not just
a breathtaking setting, but also the perfect
inspiration for alpine chalets and suites: tim-
ber from the PURADIES woods for beams
and shingling, and rough-hewn mountain
stone, and interiors that combine art with
traditional craftsmanship. Take the “Frei-
raum” bar and lounge, for example, whose
central seating feature is made of 16,000 oak
blocks and which is 40 metres long. This is
the perfect product of traditional rural skills,
excellent craftsmanship and brilliant tech-
nique. Luxury rooms, family apartments,
PRIVATE SPA CHALETS and the PURADIES
“Wolke 7” private spa chalets … all have
panoramic views of the unspoilt majesty of
the Salzburg Alps. Enjoy a mountain holiday
par excellence.
At the heart of the PURADIES spa pro-
gramme for body and soul is the “Innere
Mitte” bathhouse with its “Heaven” spa
and 360-degree panorama: the four luxu-
ry saunas (herbal, Swiss stone pine, cave
and Finnish) look out onto the beautiful
surrounding countryside. And if those beau-
tiful surroundings tempt you outside, you
can explore the large rock garden in abso-
lute privacy. PURADIES also has extensive
beauty, gym, yoga and massage facili-
ties. Those who just can’t get enough can
even attend the resort’s very own massage
school – or send their partner or friend there!
Everything at PURADIES is natural, au-
thentic and exquisite, and that includes the
food. The head chef, André Stahl, is one of
the top 20 chefs in Austria. “2015 Chef of
the Year” (“Koch des Jahres 2015”), holder
of two toques & 16 points (Gault Millau), 5*
& 96 points (À la Carte) and 3 “forks” & 92
points (Falstaff), Stahl is a master of his art
with his very own culinary style. He is re
sponsible for both regional and international
cuisine at PURADIES. The ingredients for
his inspiring creations come from the near-
by organic farm. Cooking enthusiasts can
attend the “Madreiter Cooking” classes for
an entertaining insight into culinary possibi-
lities, expertise and quality in a top-ranking
kitchen. Gourmet guests will find a premium
range of treats in the shop, which stocks
produce from the nearby organic farm, and
in the chocolaterie.
Step out the door of PURADIES, and you
enter another winter paradise. Enjoy a ro-
mantic PURADIES horse-drawn sledge
ride and discover untouched snowshoe
walks, perfectly prepared cross-country
trails, skating spots as smooth as glass,
remote ski touring routes and magical
mountainous downhill sledge runs – one
winter highlight after another. And there’s
more: the private PURADIES SKI-IN-SKI-
OUT run takes you straight to the Stein-
bergbahn lift – and on to the formidable
Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieber-
brunn ski resort. Great skiing in glorious
winter sunshine guaranteed – on 270 (!)
kilometres of pistes. STOP

THE
STYLE
MATE
Welcome to luxurious reality
Luxury branded companies must now show courage – many of the luxurious
products which are still sold over the counter in spectacular flagship stores and
elegant shopping malls will soon only be purchased by customers online. Translating
the flair that shops have to the internet is a major challenge. Whoever will ultimately
have the right strategy must first be proven. But the good things themselves will
remain real. Luxury watches and prêt-à-porter fashion cannot be downloaded as
mp3 files from the internet. Dom Pérignon will only taste good if one actually has it in
a glass. This is especially true for travel experiences. The image of a luxurious suite
in an elegant hotel with a view of a spectacular Alpine panorama is only a cheap
copy of the reality. That is why we can only awaken your thirst for luxury in this
Stylemate issue and you can only experience it and enjoy it in the third dimension.
A very long time will go by before holographic versions will be as realistic as
those envisioned by the screenplay writers for Star Trek.
Until then, welcome to the luxurious reality.

WE LOVE LUXURY. WE WANT LU
XURY. YET IT IS INCREASINGLY UN
CLEAR WHAT LUXURY ACTUALLY
IS – NOT LEAST BECAUSE OUR
UNDERSTANDING OF THE TERM IS
EVER BROADER. BUT NO LONGER
THE SAME.
THE TYROLEAN “LIFESTYLE METROPOLIS OF THE ALPS” HAS TAKEN
EXPERIENCE TO A NEW LEVEL.
THE SUPERPOWER LUXURY
THE ISCHGL
EXPERIENCE
/ LUXURY /
/ ISCHGL /
Oscar Wilde, the Irish writer and master of the
astute aphorism, coined one for luxury: “Let
me be surrounded by luxury, I can do without
the necessities!” The American journalist and
author John Updike, on the other hand, has a
luxury problem: “Possession diminishes per-
ception of value, immediately”. The Spanish
molecular head chef Ferran Adrià relativises
luxury: “Nuts are as good as caviar, and rice
is as good as lobster”.
The culinary master is probably right. At
least, the Germany luxury researcher Klaus
Heine from TU Berlin university agrees with
him. “In the past, there was a relatively clear
distinction between what was luxury and
what was not. Luxury meant expensive cars
and bubbly.” Now, the definition of luxury is
more personal. “An expensive trip for study,
for example, can also be a luxury.” According
to Heine, the focus is more on experiencing
something, on treating yourself, than on
showing off.
There are many sides and many aspects to
luxury, but all have one thing in common:
they can only be enjoyed when our everyday
existence seems secure.
The functional and practical is not enough.
You can buy a car, or be there when it is
created. You can simply shop, or you can
enter hallowed precincts. “The flagship
store is becoming a walk-in lifestyle ma-
gazine …” writes the marketing adviser
Christian Mikunda in his latest book, “Mar-
keting spüren: Willkommen am dritten Ort”
(“Experiencing Marketing: Welcome to the
Third Place”) (Redline Verlag, 2015). The-
se places are no longer simply for buying
what you need, but (also) “places for finding
yourself, for relaxing and regrouping when
in town, for browsing and for meeting peo-
ple”. Theatre may long have been a part of
tourism almost the world over – even small
village improvement societies once sought
to “touch up” reality. Ischgl, however, is su-
rely a pioneer when it comes to the modern
presentation of events and activities for tou-
rists. The Tyrolean village with just 1600 in-
habitants calls itself – and is known as – “the
R MARTIN NOVAK
Jana Scholze curated a major exhibition on
luxury in 2015 at London’s Victoria & Albert
Museum, and this is her conclusion: “Argu
ably we all have a relationship to luxury; lu
xury may be something personal which
relates to experiences of pleasure outside of
daily routines. It may be the idea of something
better … For many people, who lead heavily
pressurized personal and professional lives,
time itself is the most commonly cited luxury.”
The luxury expert Björn Theis has developed
a luxury pyramid that he claims covers all
aspects of luxury. At the base is the “demo-
cratised luxury” that is available to the mass
market in discount stores; the next level is
“social climber luxury”, which is largely about
status symbols. Next is the “niche luxury” en-
joyed by a wide range of subcultures that are
growing ever stronger in a time of increasing
individualisation. Only then comes “intangible
luxury”, most indulged in by stressed middle-
class intellectuals when they look to values,
virtues and sustainability. “Artificial scarcity”
is a luxury segment prized by small, exclusive
“in” groups and is a key marketing tool in
the luxury segment. Then comes “connois-
seurs’ luxury”, which involves an established
relationship between loyal connoisseurs and
prestigious brands. Right at the top of the py-
ramid is “super luxury”, which is only acces-
sible to the richest ten percent of the global
population.
And despite all flowery descriptions of the
term, this brings us to the market – for lu
xury is also a market. Or perhaps, in spite of
all, above all a market. In its Luxury Goods
Worldwide Market Study 2014, the consul-
tancy firm Bain & Company calculated that
lifestyle metropolis of the Alps”. First and fo-
remost, Ischgl is a great ski resort that stret-
ches all the way to Samnaun in Switzerland.
That would be enough in itself, but it isn’t all.
Years ago, the journalist Claudia Jörg-Bro-
sche was already calling Ischgl the “Queen
of the night”. The German pop band “Pur” is
raising the musical curtain on the 2016/2017
season, and Ischgl has in the past welcomed
Elton John, Rihanna, Kylie Minogue, Roxet-
te, Nickelback and James Blunt. Visitors can
enjoy culinary luxury with an amazing densi-
ty of top-quality cafés and restaurants. Five
restaurants with a total of twelve 2016 Gault
Millau toques offer the peak of culinary expe-
riences. And for exclusive shopping, you can
simply carve from Ischgl to Samnaun and
the one duty-free zone in Switzerland. The
only curb on a luxury spending spree is the
customs regulations … STOP
www.ischgl.com
850 billion dollars are spent on luxury each
year. The strongest drivers on this market are
luxury tourism and luxury cars.
Luxury and tourism, as multiple studies have
shown, are a combination that has grown in
and continues to grow in importance. In the
major luxury metropolises of New York, Hong
Kong, Paris, London and Milan, the luxury
stores would have a difficult time without
big-spending visitors. According to The Ana-
tomy of Travel Retail (a study by Exane BNP
Paribas), travellers account for 40 percent of
luxury goods sales. Most of their purchases
are made at airports, but they also buy on
ferries and cruise ships and in high-street
shops.
Yet there is another, even more important
phenomenon from a tourism perspective:
mature luxury consumers are increasingly
spending their money with exclusive hotels
and travel agencies and in the health and
spa segment rather than in boutiques.
Luxury therefore covers a broad area, as
the luxury consultant Petra-Anna Herhoffer
(inlux) explained at the 2014 Vienna Tourist
Conference: “It is our idea of the beautiful;
an attitude, a cultural treasure, a driver of
innovation; it is economic power, an indivi-
dual ideal and a strategy. In short, luxury is
a superpower.” STOP

On the outskirts of Dakar, Senegal,
Mohammed proudly showed me his new
home: an unplastered house beside the
motorway with a tap for a bathroom, a sag-
ging bed with wire mesh, a concrete floor,
far too small a kitchen and plastic flowers on
the living room table. A dump by western
standards, but to Mohammed, a long-che
rished dream. Compare this to a Viennese
lawyer’s three-storey penthouse in the city
centre: complete with an open-air whirl-
pool, pictures worth millions on the walls, a
Chevrolet Equinox and Aston Martin Vulcan
in the garage, stocks of Châteauneuf-du-
Pape in the wine cellar and a high-tech
alarm system. He is always afraid, lives off
luxury microwave meals, drinks the most
expensive red wine chilled, and is com
pletely incapable of enjoying his life. Who is
happier? Mohammed or the lawyer?
What is the greatest treasure in life? The
treasure we all strive for? A fancy villa on
Long Island? A stretch limo full of happy
partying people? A yacht in the Carib-
bean? Diamond necklaces? A handbag
from Hermès? A gold smartphone? A
Nautilus Titanium from Patek Philippe?
No, the greatest treasure in life is calm-
ness and contentment; being at one
with oneself and the universe. Luxuries
IN DEFENCE OF GENUINE LUXURY
that we acquire only to impress others will
not satisfy us. They will only inspire envy and
leave a bitter taste in the mouth.
“Tante Jolesch” (“Aunt Jolesch”), the epony
mous figure in Friedrich Torberg’s collec-
tion of real and apocryphal anecdotes, put
it like this: “Everything that makes a man
better than a monkey is luxury” (“Alles, was
der Mann schöner ist als ein Aff, ist Luxus”).
Luxury is in other words the extra, the super-
fluous. All the same, we no longer sleep on
cave floors or live off sorrel and unseasoned
barley porridge. The search for luxury, for
that extra something, is a product of our civi
lisation: culture. There are also creatures in
the animal kingdom that show off changing
rainbow colours, sing beautiful songs or build
ostentatious nests, but all that is part of the
reproduction process. And for people? For
more than a few of the super rich, a sex life is
something belonging to a bygone millennium
and luxury is at best a substitute for a faded
memory. Yet luxury is there for everyone.
Humans are the only creatures that strive for
luxury, for l’art pour l’art, out of a pleasure in
materials, shapes and beauty. We have won-
derfully designed furniture, jewellery as deli-
cate as a butterfly’s legs, cars like spaceships
from another galaxy, fantastic flavours from
culinary artists who work with the precision

of an apothecary, magical outfits, and the list
goes on. Things that bring us joy because
they are wonderful. They are as necessary
as that which makes us better than apes.
You can be happy with boiled potatoes and
butter. A glass of beer often tastes better
that a five hundred-euro wine, and a bursting
bank account by no means prevents sleep-
less nights. What is important is enjoyment,
and being happy with what you have. If you
do manage to treat yourself, you will find so
many special things and see the beauty in
– and love – life. Contentment and the abili-
ty to enjoy is all that we need. But a little lu
xury does no harm. You don’t need to make a
monkey of yourself. STOP

THINGS CAN BE TOUGH AT THE TOP. AT THE PEAK OF YOUR PROFESSION, THE TOP
MEANS HARD WORK, DEDICATION AND EXTREME STRESS. ON HOLIDAY AND OUT OF
DOORS, FORTUNATELY, THE TOP IS VERY DIFFERENT – ABOVE ALL IN EAST TYROL.
HERE, IT MEANS 266 PEAKS OVER 3000 METRES AND A NUMBER OF SMALLER, BUT NO
LESS IMPRESSIVE, NEIGHBOURING MOUNTAINS. ADMIRE FROM BELOW. EXPLORE ON
FOOT OR ON SNOWSHOES, OR TAKE A CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING TRIP. OR EXPERIENCE
DOWNHILL THRILLS ON A SLEDGE, BOARD OR ALPINE SKIS. GENTLY OR AT LIGHTNING
SPEED – IT’S ALWAYS AMAZING.
HOLIDAYS
AT THE TOP
/ EAST TYROL /
Fairytale valleys and villages stretch out
below, and you will find the perfect winter
base in the most unspoilt of all Alpine regions
in the East Tyrol Spitzcial hotels. The name
comes from “SPITZen Qualität mit speCIAL
Service” – “top quality with special service”.
Seventeen leading hotels in East Tyrol offer
just that: they are havens of comfort and
relaxation. Great hotel spa facilities are the
perfect place to revitalise after an exhausting
day on the slopes, and ideal for those simply
looking for the ultimate relaxing winter break.
Hosts are there to help literally around the
clock, offering advice, assistance and abso-
lute commitment. Not to mention excellent
cuisine. Staff from the region and around
the world with expertise in mountaineering,
alpine sports and cycling. Or equestrian
sports. Or golf. And for all of them, quality is
not just a promise, it is actively guaranteed.
The result? Enjoyment and relaxation and in
a cosy, welcoming atmosphere. In short, ab-
solute luxury!
The East Tyrolean countryside of course
plays its part – diverse and unspoilt, this
is the perfect place to escape the crowds.
For example, in Hohe Tauern national park,
where you could see ibex, chamois and ea-
gles in their natural habitat. Why not take a
snowshoe walk with national park rangers,
and you could well have just such a magical
encounter – the rangers know best where
to spot the local wildlife. The more adventu
rous visitors can swap their cosy hotel bed
for a night in an igloo of their own making,
or enjoy some amazing ski touring in what
is justifiably known as the home of cross-
country skiing. And for completely unspoilt
nature, try Villgratental valley, where there is
not a ski lift in sight. Anyone starting out in
Villgratental or looking for more adventurous
options should, however, seek the services
of an experienced guide. East Tyrol is un-
spoilt – which is why visitors must make sure
that they stay safe. Another great highlight
is the 400 kilometres of cross-country trails
between Großglockner and Großvenediger.
Explore the fascinating countryside on quiet,
gentle trails through the sunny winter land-
scape at between 600 and 2200 metres,
with snow guaranteed on the higher routes.
Professionals have the chance to hone their
skills in the biathlon centre. Speed lovers
suffer when things aren’t moving – even at
the lift. But not in East Tyrol. They have se
ven ski resorts to choose from with a total
of 150 kilometres of pistes from very gent-
le to very steep. And as there are few day
trippers, there are no queues either. You can
therefore reach the peaks in next to no time,
before a gentle, classic or full-speed descent

ley ( … great for carvers and freeriders). The
resorts of Obertilliach-Golzentipp, Kartitsch
and Virgen and Prägraten am Großvenedi-
ger are quiet and not too big, so ideal for
families. Lienz, with 2000 hours of sun
shine a year, combines a southern, medie-
val ambience with great skiing. The Hoch-
stein is famous for its alpine World Cup
run; in Zettersfeld, skiers can enjoy exten-
sive pistes and more gentle runs, not to

Kiwi, lime, green apple – with pure energy.
Enjoy the Red Bull Kiwi Twist created spe-
cially for the summer, and think of sunshine
filtering through the treetops, the heat rising
over a sandy beach and the indescribable
feeling of having absolutely nothing you need
to do. For a small, select group of guests at
the mountain bike Hotel Eder in Maria Alm
am Hochkönig, the taste of this summer
energy booster recalls very special memo
ries: of a day with the world speed bike
champion Markus Stöckl, of unforgettable
views and experiences, and of a great feel
ing of achievement. The trip, together with a
weekend in Hotel Eder, was the first prize in
the summer competition run by Red Bull and
the Lifestylehotels.
Doubly expert
The group set out straight from Maria Alm
under the professional instruction of Red Bull
athlete Stöckl, who has in the past mastered
the most daring downhill runs on rock, snow
and scree. They headed for Saalfelden, into
the Kalmbachgraben and over the Hochreith
to Kronreithhütte hut – for a lunch break with
a breathtaking panorama. At lunch, Markus
Stöckl was able to offer his expertise in two
areas: as a top mountain biker, and as a
trained chef who once contributed his reci-
pe for “Karamellisierter Apfelschmarrn à la
Oma” (“Grandmother’s caramelised apple
‘Schmarrn’”) to the Red Bull athletes’ cook-
book. “Schmarrn” – a fluffy dish of chopped
up pancakes – was also served on the bike
trip with apple sauce. However, the keen
amateur bikers were not that interested in
Markus Stöckl the chef; their questions were
all about two wheels – and how you become
a champion on them.
Rested and refreshed, they then headed
downhill back to Maria Alm, a bit more slow-
ly and definitively more circuitously than on
Stöckl’s usual runs. But there was little time
for a breather – from Maria Alm, the route
then went back uphill on the “Natrun” for
technique training on the FlowOne flow trail.
This single trail starts at the top station of the
cable railway and winds down around 285
metres over a distance of more than two kilo-
metres through forests and meadows into the
valley. What’s so great about it: it is as much a
treat for beginners as it is for experts.
Impressing the professional
If you want to hone your technique, indivi
dual advice is best, and that is exactly what
Markus Stöckl gave his group. “I thought the
trip was super. Markus really took time for
us, responded to every single question, and
repeatedly demonstrated just what is pos-
sible on a bike.” This amazement at what a
bike can do came not from a beginner, quite
the opposite. The surprised participant who
was so impressed with Markus Stöckl was
the bike guide Max Klein. Not only does
Klein take Hotel Eder guests cross-coun-
try around the Hochkönig, he is himself a
seven-time Bavarian road race, track and
time trial champion, and two-times German
champion in the four-man team road time
trial. Even for him, the professional, there
were some inspiring tips.
Après-bike with a twist
For real athletes, no trip is complete without
après-bike. “We watched videos of Markus
Stöckl’s record runs and then ate together
and talked shop”, recounted one participant.
The Red Bull Twist was of course served, at
the perfect temperature and with fresh fruit.
Hotel Eder in Maria Alm is not the only “hotel
with a Twist” – or hotel that serves the ultimate
summer drink and offers a unique sporting
experience. It is one of the top attractions
for mountain bike enthusiasts; after all, it is
home to one of just six European ROSE bike
centres. Holidaymakers here can test ride the
best bikes, explore the area six days a week
with a bike guide from the hotel, or set off on
their own. However, this is also the perfect
place for those who simply want to enjoy the
view of the hills, the great spa programme
and fine Hotel Eder cuisine with regional roots
and international flair.
Places of unforgettable
sporting experiences
The other selected spots for unforgettable
sporting experiences and relaxed chat over a
Red Bull Twist are scattered over picturesque
corners of Austria. Ambitious hikers are best
setting out from the design hotel Lederer’s
Living in Kaprun for the Kitzsteinhorn – the
easiest to scale of the 3000-metre peaks;
the Wildkogel Resort in Bramberg has the
perfect conditions for (aspiring) archers, and
stand-up paddlers should head for DAS
KRONTHALER hotel in Achenkirch. For
guests wishing to explore the Serfaus-Fiss-
Ladis bike park, we recommend the alps-
lodge hotel; sunrise hikes are organised by
the Sonne Lifestyle Resort in Mellau, while
the Iris Porsche Hotel near Mondsee lake is
the place to go for golf. Many bikers start the
5-BIKE Challenge with its “snapshot points”
from the Thomsn.Rock.Hotel in Hinterglemm;
the most challenging water ski trips start at
Hotel Cortisen boutique hotel on Wolfgang-
see lake. Indulge your taste for adventure.

WINTER IN THE ALPS: EVERYTHING SPARKLES, AND THE CRYSTAL CLEAR AIR IS ALMOST A SHOCK TO CITY LUNGS. PURE SUN-
SHINE – HARDLY BEARABLE WITHOUT SHADES. AND THE SOUND: A RESONANT CRUNCHING AND JUST A LIGHT CLINK – AT EVERY
STEP. ANYONE WHO DOESN’T RESPOND WITH A SERIOUS ENDORPHIN RUSH PROBABLY IS BEYOND THE HELP OF EVEN THE BEST
THERAPIST. HOWEVER, THERE IS HOPE EVEN FOR THE MOST HARD-BOILED CASES. FIRSTLY, INCREASE THE DOSE: THE MORE
MOUNTAINS AND THE LONGER THE STAY, THE BETTER. SECONDLY, THE EFFECT IS HEIGHTENED BY COMBINING EXERCISE AND
MOUNTAINS. NEED SOME EXAMPLES?
THE SOUND OF WINTER
/ SKIHOTELS /
That’s a funny sound: the wind is whistling
really loudly. But that noise in my ear … hey,
it’s my pulse! Mouth goes dry and throat
starts to constrict. Swallow. Don’t panic!
I’ll manage. Hopefully. No: definitely. Let’s
see. Go for it! Swoosh … Clack. Swoosh …
Clack. This is steep – swooshclack swoosh
clack! I’m doing fine. Well, even. Wooow!
I’m doing it! Now over the edge and: JUMP!
Clack … Swoosh. Hey, great powder!
Nothing could be better than deep pow-
der snow … and hello, I’m making the first
tracks. Awesome!!!
Sweeping downhill through untouched
deep powder snow – for example on the
Kitzsteinhorn in Kaprun – is the stuff of
dreams for any freestyle fan. The Zell am
See-Kaprun ski resort information system
and the common sense of the freeriders
who use it ensure that for all their dream
ing, they keep their feet on the ground. For
hitting the slopes in the backcountry is only
really to be recommended on one condition:
excellent preparation – including for off-piste
conditions. Technique, skill and informa
tion are not the only grounding factors. En-
counters are also important, for example
in Lederer’s Living, the smart little ski hotel
right in centre of Kaprun. The Lederers are
the perfect friendly hosts, committed to the
well-being and comfort of their guests: from
the excellent breakfast and the lounge with
its crackling hearth, to the penthouse sau-
na with views of the Kitzsteinhorn that will
beckon again tomorrow.
There are plenty of fish in the sea, and that
can also apply to ski resorts. Saalbach-
Hinterglemm-Leogang-Fieberbrunn sounds
big – and it is. As you would expect, Austria’s
largest ski resort has something for every
one (270! kilometres of pistes and 70 lifts).
Not for nothing is the resort slogan “Home
of lässig” – “The home of cool”: the Rave on
Snow (the country’s largest winter clubbing
event that runs from 8th
to 11th
December) is
just one highlight. Others are the boarders
with their exciting moves in three absolutely
amazing snowparks, and boardercross. By
the way: Nightpark Saalbach is the perfect
“habitat” for the night owls among the boards
(and their riders). And when rider and board
are finally ready for bed, a good night’s sleep
in peace and quiet is guaranteed in the po-
wer sleeping rooms at the Alpin Juwel in
Saalbach-Hinterglemm – and completely
free from radiation. Absolute wellness is
the hotel’s speciality: the AJ-Veda Spa with
pools, saunas, yoga and gym facilities is a
treat for body and soul, as is the healthy Aus-
trian cuisine with regional produce.
How tiresome it used to be: pulling on your
hard, ice-cold ski boots. Whomp. Whomp.
Whomp. Sniff. Already in a sweat after a
couple of steps. And still ten minutes to the
lift – whomp. Whomp. Whomp. Aaargh!
What now? Slide. Clack. Slide. Clack. Creak.
Creak. Clack. Clack. And then: Swoosh!
There’s a lot to be said for ski-in-ski-out: sim-
ply slip into your bindings at the door and set
off, no stress – why not head straight for the
piste? For example from Hotel PURADIES
in Leogang: its private run takes you right to
the Steinbergbahn lift. You can then enjoy
Alpine skiing in all its glory on the perfectly
prepared pistes in Saalbach-Hinterglemm-
Leogang-Fieberbrunn ski resort. After a
wonderful day out, you can unwind in the
“Innere Mitte” PURADIES bathing house and
enjoy the amazing mountain panorama once
again from one of four different saunas. After
an excellent dinner from gourmet chef Andrè
Stahl you can get some well-earned rest in
your luxurious PURADIES chalet.
Even further west, winter has a lot to re-
commend it. For example in Ötztal, Tyrol’s
highest skiing resort with snow guaranteed.
Amidst 250 peaks over 3000 metres, this is
the perfect place to swing, glide, walk and
climb – in winter, this last of course on the
ice. Adventurous city visitors seek the ser-
vice of experienced professional guides. Or
they take the easier option and do what their
doctors at home never tire of advising: run.
A marked winter running trail of an incredible
total length of 40 kilometres winds through
this amazing snowy landscape. And if the
running route isn’t giving you that real winter
feeling, why not head for one of the great
range of pistes: 110 kilometres with 35 easy
and 20 difficult pistes – one of the most
challenging is at Hohe Mut (literally “Great
Courage”) alm. You can “pluck up” what it
takes, can’t you? The best place to start is in
the spa at “The Crystal” hotel in Obergurgl:
private spa suites, the gym, pools and sau-
nas make for perfect physical preparation
and ultimate relaxation. The Alpine cuisine
wine are a gourmet treat – this is The Crystal
Lifestyle. And all this is just a stone’s throw
from the Obergurgl pistes, which sweep
from the magnificent 3000 m peaks down
into the valley.

SERFAUS-FISS-LADIS: THE PREMIUM HOLIDAY DESTINATION. IN THE
HEART OF THE BREATHTAKING TYROLEAN MOUNTAINS LIES FISS, ONE
OF THE LARGEST SKI RESORTS IN TYROL WITH AN EXCELLENT INFRA-
STRUCTURE. RIGHT IN THE CENTRE OF FISS IS THE TRENDY ALPSLODGE
WITH A STYLISH BAR, BEAUTIFUL PANORAMA SUITES AND WONDERFUL
VIEWS OF THE SURROUNDING SNOW-COVERED PEAKS.
TRENDY LODGE ON A
SUN-KISSED PLATEAU
/ TYROL / SERFAUS-FISS-LADIS /
And because there are so many won-
derful views in this beautiful region, the
alpslodge has designed its suites
rooms around these unique panoramas.
Those looking for sheer relaxation can
head straight to the Sky Relax Zone: a
sauna in matured timber style, a steam
bath, and the sky lounge with its ama-
zing panorama … Rest and revitalisa
tion are guaranteed. Ski straight from the
piste into the hotel’s own ski area: head
ing back from a day on the slopes to the
nearby alpslodge couldn’t be easier! Be
sure to take a break in the stylish Life Style
Bar cozy fireplace lounge. Even the best
day of holiday eventually comes to an end,
and it is time to enjoy the suites and rooms
with their fresh, simple lines and authentic
Alpine materials. After a great night’s sleep,
the alpslodge serves the perfect breakfast:
this trendy bed-and-breakfast is hard to
beat. With display cooking and a generous
breakfast buffet of local produce, this is an
absolute treat for guests. The alpslodge
knows only the very best is good enough
for them. Anyone then wanting to head to
the peaks is just a few minutes’ walk from
the Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis cableway base sta-
tions. A magical day’s skiing is just a stone’s
throw away! By the way: the hotel’s trendy
“car lounge” car park is just as stylish as the
rest of the hotel. STOP
And finally, winter enjoyment at literally the
highest level: Kals is at the foot of the Groß-
glockner. The Großglockner is not only
Austria’s highest mountain, it is also situated
in a very special area: Hohe Tauern national
park. This means wonderful skiing in winter
in Großglockner Resort Kals-Matrei, and
rare chances to discover nature in the quiet
and stillness: for example spotting ibex, cha-
mois and eagles in their natural habitat on a
snowshoe walk with national park rangers.
A perfect base for all conceivable (and we
mean all conceivable) winter sporting activi-
ties is the Gradonna Mountain Resort Châlets
Hotel with ski-in-ski-out, a huge spa area
with pools, saunas, massage etc. And guests
who have had enough of the out-of-doors
can practise (their first?) holds and pulls in the
boulder and climbing area.
Last but not least, we have to mention
Switzerland’s highest ski resort if we’re talk
ing about winter relaxation and revitalisation:
the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise lives up to its
name, and it is the highest anywhere in the
Alps. In and around Zermatt, forget stresses
and strains and recharge your batteries on
360 (!) kilometres of piste. Snow is guaranteed
365 days a year – now that’s pretty special.
And quite honestly, the view of the Matterhorn
and the beautiful neighbouring peaks always
does you good even if you don’t move a mus
cle. At the Hotel Matterhorn Focus, beauty
is not just at the window: the design hotel’s
own art and architecture, created by leading
artist Heinz Julen, is itself a joy to behold. The
spa area has a definite mystic flair – and of
course pools, a salt bath, a caldarium and a
sauna. STOP

THE SWISS ALPS, AMIDST THE SNOW – THE ULTIMATE TESTING GROUND: THIS IS WHERE INNOVATIVE SKIS
REDUCED TO THE KEY ESSENTIALS ARE CREATED. WOOD AND HIGH-TECH MATERIALS ARE COMBINED TO
OFFER THE BEST POSSIBLE BASIS FOR STABILITY AND AGILITY.
SHEER
QUALITY
/ ZAI /
zai skis are different. Always a ski length – or
an entire piste – ahead of the field in develop
ment … Each new model is the product of
zai’s own research and innovation. “Quite
often, we are the first to use a particular ma-
terial for skis”, explains Simon Jacomet, the
premium Swiss ski-maker’s founder and de-
signer. The products have to be “zai”: literally
“tough” – durable and able to withstand the
harshest of conditions. They also have to be
uniquely flexible to offer skiers the greatest
possible freedom.
A zai ski is amazingly versatile in the truest
sense of the word, but it is also reduced to
the essentials. From cedar wood to stone
and unique carbon fibres, each material
used fulfils a specific function: nothing is
superfluous. The same applies to the ski’s
appearance. Clean lines, classic colours
and nothing that doesn’t need to be there.
A harmonious combination of eastern Zen
philosophy and ski design.
Nature high-tech
For all their Far Eastern flair, nothing could be
more practical than the skis’ development.
zai literally keeps its feet (skis) on the ground:
“Every single part of our skis is produced in
Disentis, in the heart of the Swiss Alps”, says
Jacomet. On the very mountainside where
they need to perform in practice – in the snow,
in the ice, in the firn … zai skis are tested on
the slopes right from the development phase.
Developing products so close to their place
of use results in amazing flexibility: skis are
tested at each stage of development and in
all conditions. If improvements are required,
the ski is modified by the local specialists re-
sponsible for the manual work that accounts
for half of the production process for each zai
ski. Everyone who works here was skiing ever
since they could say “snow”.
Disentis might not be the perfect produc-
tion site in economic terms, but it offers the
best possible testing conditions. zai skis
combine the benefits of genuine, specialist
manual production with those of high-tech
equipment – and of a laboratory that has al-
ready adapted more than one material for a
completely new application.
Anyone who has the strength and staying
power and a hard enough heart to cut open
a zai ski will find both natural products, in
the form of granite, cedar wood, Dyneema®
fibres and vulcanised rubber, and high-tech
materials also used in the aerospace indus-
try. The tensile force of Dyneema®
fibres is
hard to beat. Other applications include bul-
let-proofing aeroplane cockpit doors. Abso-
lutely “zai” materials are used in the skis of
the same name.
The luxury of time
Even once a model is already being pro-
duced in series, the staff at zai spend that
luxury, time, on each individual ski: it takes
7 to 15 hours until a pair of skis is ready for
the piste, while a pair of standard skis of-
ten leaves the conveyor belt in 30 minutes.
Yet the hours invested pay off, and give zai
skiers countless unforgettable moments on
the slopes. While a conventional ski loses a
fourth of its tension after 30 days’ use, a zai
still has 95 percent of its tension after 100
days.
For those who want the best but only ski
for a week each winter, a special service
is available: zai skis are available to hire. A
personal delivery service takes the required
zai to any Swiss ski resort and collects it
after use; advice and service included. The
only difficulty lies in selecting the correct
model; otherwise, everything is organised
for you. You can save all your energy for
performance on the piste.
But be careful: once you’ve skied with zai,
you might never want to change … STOP

Without Switzerland’s largest cable car
operator, the highest ski resort in the
Alps and its genuinely fantastic mountain
panorama would surely only be acces-

enthusiasts. The Matterhorn, Rothorn
and Testa Grigia are just some of the most
beautiful peaks that rise up around Zer-
matt – and in one of the largest and best
developed skiing resorts in the world, with
snow guaranteed, ensure winter sporting
experiences at literally the highest level. On
the Plateau Rosa, for example, the glacier
means that this applies 365 days a year –
which is why national teams often use the
magical summer ski resort for training. And
about the glacier: ice crystals and shim
mering ice sculptures sparkle and dazzle
in the “Glacier Palace” (Gletscher Palast)
on the Kleines Matterhorn. A lift takes you
down 15 metres below the surface to a fairy
tale palace in the perennial ice. Ice tunnels
then lead to a glacier crevasse and the ice
toboggan run. The romantic visitor can ad-

valley runs from the Adelboden mountains.
The silhouette of the Tofana Alta Badia is
shaped like a mountain, and landscape
analogies also define the interior design:
the restaurant takes a playful approach to
the alpine meadow and mountain cave, the
bar is a cosy campfire, and the skies are
reflected in the Sky Relax spa on the roof
– with whirlpool, sun terrace, Finnish and
organic sauna, infrared cabin, pilates and
yoga. The brand-new hotel calls its guests
to “Go out and explore”, and that is just what
adventurous winter enthusiasts can do as of
December 2016: the hotel is just 300 metres
from the cable car to Piz Sorega. From there,
you can explore 500 km of pistes as you can

Alpine, Nordic, on the board, on the sledge,
the old-fashioned option on foot with or with
out snowshoes, or wrapped up nice and
warm for a ride in a horse-drawn carriage: on
the many, many sunny days, winter sports on
the Arlberg are the ultimate treat for everyone
who loves the snow. With a hugely varied 350
kilometres of piste, 200 (!) kilometres of un-
prepared slopes, romantic trails, lightning-fast
sledge runs and exciting snow parks, Arlberg
is a paradise for fans of the white stuff.
After all that exhilarating exercise – full-speed
downhill or gentle, gliding motion – you need
somewhere to rest and recuperate. A place
that offers cosy, homely comfort without
stifling. A place that gives you a warm wel-
come and caters to your every need. A place
that ensures you enjoy what holidays are all
about: relaxation and absolute well-being.
That place is Berghotel Sonnblick Lech. The
restaurant serves up culinary treats with
boundless creativity and amazing attention
to detail. Visitors who have been making the

most of the local sporting opportunities will
love the Finnish sauna and salt steam bath.
The steam bath stimulates the airways and
invigorates the skin. All the cosy, modern
rooms and suites have wonderful views of
the Arlberg peaks, and that very beauty, the
magnificence of the Alps, is itself a feast for
the soul. Thanks to the nearby infrastructure,
scaling those magical peaks is rapid and
easy: the Schlegelkopfbahn lift is just 80–100
metres from the hotel. Climb in for uninter-
rupted winter highlights, and leave your car
in the underground car park for another day’s
well-deserved rest – after all, it made it up the

True exclusiveness is a matter of the per-
sonal touch. Genuine charm in naturalness
and well-being in one experience to which
nothing must be added. The new holiday
flats are characterized by cosy and especially
sustainable Alpine lifestyle. Indigenous wood
from the surrounding forests, Arolla pine
furniture in the bedrooms, StoCalce plaster
for a perfect indoor climate, high-quality oak
floors from the Weitzer company, energy-
saving LED lights and handcrafted furniture
which, according to the master craftsman, is
setting “new standards in the hotel industry”.
The harmonious colour concept, the large
windows which allow nature into the house,
the balconies and terraces and the wonder
ful materials that feel like a second skin are
further reasons to love the new Arabella.
Swimming, taking a sauna, letting your
mind wander – in the exclusive SPA with
the AraVita sauna facilities, the Relax-Room,
the Sky-Sauna, the whirlpool, the large pool,

and the atmosphere is unifying here as well.
The individually designed holiday flats, the in-

Austria, Italy and Switzerland border triangle.
A picturesque panorama, natural minerals
and its vicinity to the centre of the village, the

ZAI ONZA: STABLE AGILITY
A joy to ski on, layer for layer: the core of the zai onza is ultra-lightweight branchless cedar wood in
laminated strips. This is covered by layers of UD carbon fibre running in different directions, with wafer-
thin rubber (0.2 mm) in the top and bottom chords. The top sheet consists of the zaiíra®
pressure
transmitter specially developed by zai, and natural rubber for good performance and exceptional
smoothness. The final touch to the top sheet is the typical zai stainless steel edge. This is extremely
robust and corrosion-resistant and protects the ski from impact. The running surface has the world’s
best Nano high-speed race base. 174 cm long, 80 mm wide in the middle, and just 1550 g. Available

NWW – THE NEUE WIENER WERKSTÄTTE – STANDS FOR MODERN AND EXCLUSIVE DESIGN
BY AUSTRIAN AND INTERNATIONAL DESIGNERS. WITH ITS NWW DESIGN AWARD – THE
COUNTDOWN FOR 2017 HAS JUST BEGUN – NWW IS FOCUSING ON “NEW HOSPITALITY”
AND IS CALLING FOR DESIGNS BY NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL COMPETITORS FROM
THE CREATIVE INDUSTRIES ON THE THEME OF “ARRIVING AND BEING THERE”.
/ KAPO /
Boundaries have now become vague to
non-existent where clear distinctions were
once drawn – for example between work
and leisure, living and travelling. Project
work at different locations has become the
norm. People are on the move, both physi-
cally and virtually, more and in more ways
than ever before. The other side to all this is
arriving. An ancient tradition – hosting – has
therefore gained a whole new significance
in our “to go” society. This “new hospitality”
makes life together possible – in all of its fa
cets; in spontaneous visits or planned over-
night stays. It provides space for encounter,
but also privacy. It ensures that guests feel
at home and enjoy their stay. That they can
rest and re-energise before setting out once
again. Fittings and furnishing can be part of
this process.
That is why the “NWW Design Award 2017”
is looking for furniture that offers practical
help for stowing, attaching, changing, pulling
out, personalising, folding-up and working.
Furniture that helps to accommodate every
patchwork situation for which not only more,
but also different space is needed. Furniture
that meets the high aesthetic standards of
today’s globetrotters.
The high-profile international jury is
chaired by the US designer Karim Rashid.
The top three competitors will receive a
trophy, and NWW will produce prototypes
of their designs. A prize of EUR 5,000
will also be awarded for the winning de-
sign. Submissions will be published at
www.nww-designaward.org and will
be shown in a touring exhibition. Please
MUSIC MOVES AND INSPIRES. HUNDREDS – AT FESTIVALS, GIGS AND RAVES. AND INDIVIDUALS TOO: PERSONS
WITH A MUSICAL DISPOSITION SUFFER WITHOUT “THEIR” MUSIC – EVEN AND ABOVE ALL ON HOLIDAY. EAR-
PHONES? A DEAD LOSS. WOULD THEY BE ENOUGH FOR YOU? THANKS TO POET-ONE AND PANDORETTA, THEY
DON’T NEED TO BE. YOU CAN ENJOY YOUR HOLIDAY LITERALLY WITH ALL THE SENSES – AND WE ALL KNOW
HEARING IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT.
POET AUDIO
COMES TO HOTELS
The music you’re craving is sent over a wire
less connection from your mobile or tablet to
the Poet Audio sound systems – no installa-
tion or messing around needed. And then:
excellent sound from up to 360 degrees –
music exactly to suit your taste. And as the
sound systems also look great, this is a treat
for the eye as well as the ear.
For example in the Hallstatt Hideaway: a
pandoretta hangs white on white from the
ceiling of a private suite. Through the win-
dow, the beautiful lake and inside, nothing
but this heavenly sound: home from home
– only better … The outer design of the
sound systems is as varied as the music
they play – a yodeller sounds as good as
Nessun dorma or the African blues. In the
Hallstatt Hideaway, the design specifica-
tions of owner Silke Seemann were realised
as effectively as Poet Audio mastermind
Markus Platzer and his team implement
other customisation requirements. And be-
cause guests often ask Seemann about the
sound masterpiece, she is now setting up a
system for viewing and purchase.
In LustBOXX at DAS KRONTHALER hotel in
Achenkirch, Tyrol, Poet Audio already has its
own stylish presentation area, where poet-
one, pandoretta and fonetta are available
to admire and test. Operation is strikingly
simple: wake up, standby, signal. The sound
is extremely pure – even at very high vol
umes. The design is elegant and time
less. Set to a moderate volume, the music
from the poet-one covers over 300 square
metres in the shopping facility at DAS
KRONTHALER – and can be heard equally
well from everywhere thanks to the advan-
ced ultra-pure mono sound.
In 2016, a crowd funding project allowed
the Graz sound experts to acquire new cli-
ents. Two new Poet boutiques will soon be
opening in Vienna and Graz. Version 4.0 is
currently state of the art. But it is only one
stage in development, for “the concept of
maximum simplicity is unbeatable, and still
has enormous potential”, believes Poet Au-
dio boss Markus Platzer. He is consciously
exploiting a counterpoint to the standard
trend towards increasing complexity and
superfluous functions. Is he considering
expansion with business so strong? “We
are growing organically. Small is beautiful,
as many famous figures have already said”,
concludes Platzer. Hear ye, hear ye! STOP

THE ALPSLODGE IN FISS HAS CREATED AN EXCLUSIVE PLACE OF CALM FOR ALL THOSE SEEK

DEEP AND EFFECTIVE HARMONY.
ZEN INSPIRES
/ LuxuryTrees®
/
In the tradition of the Zen garden, power
and simplicity reflect Mother Earth. Selected
plants, including the delicate and willowy
Japanese bonsai species Taxus cuspidata
and Pinus parviflora, form a powerful and
atmospheric combination with the gravel,
stones and artistically raked sand. This in
spiring haven has been created by the bonsai
specialist LuxuryTrees®
. Thomas Ortner, the
company’s director, runs a very special tree
nursery in the Tyrolean town of St. Johann,
near Kitzbühel. The nursery has its own
show garden and specialises in bonsai, ex-
clusive garden trees and Zen and Japanese
gardens. LuxuryTrees®
operates an office
in Innsbruck and a 200-hectare nursery in
Japan growing some of the country’s most
prized trees and shrubs. The online shop at
luxurytrees.com sells a wide range of ex-
clusive bonsai and garden trees, including
full-grown specimens, as well as specialist
literature, tools, tubs, sculptures and stones.
LuxuryTrees®
also offers an exclusive garden
design service for private individuals and
hoteliers looking for something modern and
out of the ordinary. Ideal garden planning is
not just about considering customer wishes
for their new garden. It also means asses-
sing conditions on the ground – the options
and restrictions – and developing the best
possible solution for the site with the right
choice of plants. This approach ensures
that the choice trees can be appreciated
in all their glory, and significantly increases
their lifespan. Of course, the LuxuryTrees®
service also includes implementation – im-
porting and planting the beautiful and in
some cases centuries-old trees and caring
for them on the customer’s site. Did you
know: LuxuryTrees®
is the only company
in Europe to hold a licence to import these
high-quality species? Thus, Ortner’s gar-
den design philosophy – “The trees make
the garden. We create gardens for gene-
rations” – proves true. Japanese and Zen
gardens are both easy to maintain and
long-lasting. They increase the value of
the properties that they surround for ge-
nerations. STOP
