This document summarizes a research report assessing the effectiveness of lemon grass oil (Cymbopogon) for water purification. The study examined the potency of lemon grass oil in destroying bacteria in water at different dose levels and contact times against the standard chlorine disinfectant. Water samples were treated with either 2ml or 4ml of lemon grass oil or chlorine for 10 or 30 minutes. Results showed that at 2ml/10mins, chlorine was more effective at reducing bacterial load, but at 4ml/30mins there was no significant difference between chlorine and lemon grass oil. The study concluded that lemon grass oil can effectively reduce bacterial load in water, especially at higher concentrations and longer contact times.
This document discusses different types of pollination in plants. It describes self-pollination, which can occur through autogamy within a flower or geitonogamy between different flowers of the same plant. Cross-pollination involves the transfer of pollen between different plants and can be facilitated by biotic agents like insects, birds, or abiotic factors like wind and water. The document provides examples of different pollination types and notes advantages and disadvantages of self-pollination versus cross-pollination.

This document provides an overview of oceanography, outlining the 5 oceans, key topics within oceanography like physical, chemical, and biological oceanography. It also discusses the history of ocean exploration from early Polynesian navigation techniques to modern voyages that have advanced our understanding of ocean depths and life, including the discovery of the Marianas Trench.
The phosphorus cycle describes the movement of phosphorus through lithosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere. Phosphorus is essential for life and is found in DNA, bones, teeth, and used in matches. In the phosphorus cycle, weathering releases phosphorus from rocks into soil. Microbes convert phosphorus in soil into soluble inorganic forms that can be absorbed by plants. Plants and animals absorb phosphorus, which returns to the environment through decomposition. The cycle continuously moves phosphorus from the lithosphere into the biosphere and back again.
Virtual population analysis - fisheries managementMagnus Johnson
This document discusses virtual population analysis, a method for estimating fish population sizes over time using known variables like catch data, fishing mortality rates, and natural mortality rates. It presents equations that allow calculation of the number of fish surviving after a given number of years based on the total mortality rate. For example, if the mortality rate is 20% per year, the number of fish surviving after 1 year from an initial population of 1000 would be 800. The document works through an example of using catch data from multiple years to estimate population sizes and fishing mortality rates for those years.
Life in the deep ocean is sparse due to lack of sunlight and nutrients. Organisms have adapted specialized features to survive in these conditions such as bioluminescence, transparent bodies, and downward-facing eyes. Nutrients cycle through the water column as plankton and organic matter sink from the surface. Some fish migrate vertically to feed in nutrient-rich surface waters at night, while non-migrators survive on the metabolisms and protein of migrators. Extreme pressures and darkness present challenges for reproduction which organisms overcome through bioluminescent signals, chemical cues, and hermaphroditism.
Salinity is the saltiness or dissolved salt content of a body of water. It has been traditional to express salinity not as percent(%), but as parts per thousand(‰). i hope you will like it.
This document discusses the use of organic chemistry in agriculture, specifically in fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides. It explains that fertilizers can be organic, derived from plant or animal matter like urea and manure, or inorganic, derived from inorganic compounds like ammonium nitrate. Pesticides are substances used to control pests and include herbicides to kill weeds, insecticides to kill insects, and fungicides to kill fungi. Common organic compounds used as pesticides are 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid as an herbicide and urea as a fertilizer.
Monitoring Kualitas Ikan Dan Lingkungan Kawasan BudidayaBBAP takalar
Marine habitats can be classified based on where organisms live and how they move. Plankton live in the water column and cannot swim against currents. Nekton actively swim and move independently of currents. Benthos live on, in, or near the seabed. The intertidal zone is the area between tide marks that can include rocky cliffs, sandy beaches, or mudflats. Estuaries form a transition between river and ocean environments with brackish water. Tide pools are rocky pools filled with seawater that only exist at low tide. Coral reefs are structures made of calcium carbonate secreted by corals. Kelp forests are dense underwater areas of kelp that are productive ecosystems.
The document summarizes several important biogeochemical cycles, including the carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur, and oxygen cycles. It describes how each element is cycled between the biosphere, geosphere, and atmosphere through biological and chemical processes. Microorganisms play a key role in transferring nutrients between different forms and facilitating exchange through oxidation-reduction reactions. All of the cycles are interlinked as they involve the movement of elements between living organisms and their environment.
The document discusses different plant structures and their functions. It explains that seeds contain a radicle and plumule, where the radicle grows into the roots below ground and the plumule grows into the stem above ground. Roots have two types - taproots and fibrous roots. The stem contains nodes and internodes and bears leaves, flowers and fruits. Leaves have a lamina, petiole and base, and perform photosynthesis. Leaves have two venation patterns - reticulate and parallel venation.
The document discusses the hydrosphere, which is the global mass of water on Earth that is continually circulating between oceans, atmosphere, and land. It notes that the oceans hold about 97% of the planet's water. Precipitation falls as rain, snow, hail or sleet and runs off into water sources or infiltrates the ground. Fresh water sources include surface water from precipitation and groundwater stored underground in aquifers and soil. The water table marks the top of saturated ground containing over 40 times as much water as all other freshwater sources combined. The document emphasizes the significance of water for civilization and public health.
Eutrophication & the Process of EutrophicationPantho Sarker
The document discusses eutrophication presented by student Gourav Roy. It defines eutrophication as over-nutrition of nitrogen, phosphorus, and carbon in water bodies. There are two types: natural eutrophication caused by natural processes without human interference, and cultural eutrophication which is accelerated by human activities like fertilizer and sewage runoff. Examples of eutrophication around the world and in Bangladesh are provided. Control methods include minimizing non-point pollution through buffer zones and reducing imported and endogenous nutrients.
This standard operating procedure describes the process for collecting surface water samples from Carter Creek on the Texas A&M University golf course. Samples will be collected using a dipper sampler and bailer sampler to obtain representative samples. After collection, samples will be tested for coliform bacteria and other water quality parameters. Proper preservation, handling, and documentation procedures will be followed to maintain sample integrity. Quality control samples like rinsates will also be collected and analyzed.
In this presentation a brief description is given about salinity, types of salinity. What is water salinity and soil salinity. And also a small brief note on source of salts.

This study investigated nitrogen transformations in aquaponic systems under different conditions. The main findings were:
1) Nitrate continuously accumulated in the recirculating water, termed the "Balloon Effect", because nitrate input from fish waste exceeded plant uptake.
2) Denitrification, the conversion of nitrates/nitrites to nitrogen gas, was found to be the major source of nitrogen loss. Higher dissolved oxygen and lower feeding rates decreased denitrification.
3) Isotopic analysis showed denitrification rates were higher under low dissolved oxygen conditions, as evidenced by higher nitrate δ15N values. This supported denitrification as the primary nitrogen loss pathway.
The document provides an introduction to aquaponics systems. It describes key elements like how nutrient-rich effluent from fish tanks is used to fertigate hydroponic beds, with the plants removing nutrients to benefit the fish. Several example aquaponics systems are summarized, including the early system developed at North Carolina State University in the 1980s linking tilapia tanks and sand-cultured vegetable beds. Research there found aquaponics can conserve water and nutrients while producing fish and organic vegetables using only fish feed as input. Considerations for successful aquaponics include matching the ratio of fish tanks to growing beds and maintaining good water quality.
Friendly Aquaponics: the basics of the systemBryy4
Aquaponics combines aquaculture and hydroponics into a symbiotic system where fish waste fertilizes plants grown hydroponically. The system has several advantages including higher crop yields using less water and also producing fish. A commercial aquaponics system at the University of the Virgin Islands yields 200-300 lbs of vegetables and 200 lbs of fish per week from a single system. The technology is low-cost, easy to operate, and balanced without needing water changes or cleaning for years.
This document discusses aquaponics and provides information about starting an aquaponics system. It notes that aquaponics allows you to grow organic vegetables year-round and raise your own meat. It also mentions that aquaponics has been used for centuries, such as in ancient Chinese rice-carp fields and by pre-Columbian Amazonians. The document warns that designing an aquaponics system requires diligence and planning, and recommends starting on a small scale initially before expanding.

This document outlines a 16-week course on aquaponics gardening. It introduces aquaponics and its components like hydroponics and aquaculture. It discusses the global perspective on aquaponics and designing an integrated aquaponics system. The course covers system hardware like tanks, beds, plumbing and media. It also covers the software including fish, plants, bacteria and maintenance. Each week focuses on a different aspect of aquaponics design, setup and maintenance.
This document describes an aquaponics project at Greensgrow Farms in Philadelphia that aims to grow food using aquaponics in an urban setting. The project will design an integrated and expandable aquaponics system using Greensgrow's existing involvement in hydroponics and aquaculture. Research was conducted on backyard, home, and commercial aquaponic systems. Concept sketches show indoor and outdoor system designs. The constructed system uses repurposed materials and includes fish tanks, reservoirs, grow beds, and supporting structures.
This document provides an overview of aquaponics, which is a sustainable food production system that integrates aquaculture (raising fish) and hydroponics (growing plants without soil). In aquaponics, the waste produced by fish provides nutrients for plants to grow. The bacteria in biofilters convert the fish waste into plant-available nutrients, and the plants help filter the water for the fish. Aquaponics uses less water than traditional agriculture and fish or plant production alone. It allows for local food production with minimal environmental impact.

„You can’t marry a man you just met.”
You can’t gender a Disney princess you just met.“
The document summarizes the efforts to reboot and regain control of the decommissioned ISEE-3 spacecraft from 2014-2016. A team of amateur radio operators and scientists were able to reestablish communication with ISEE-3 and receive telemetry, but were unsuccessful in their attempts to perform trajectory correction maneuvers due to issues with the spacecraft's propulsion system. The mission was transitioned to collecting additional science data before ISEE-3's orbit takes it out of communication range again.

Was ist Aquaponik?
Der Begriff besteht aus:
Aquakultur und Hydroponik
Bedeutet:
• Aquakulturfische (Speise- oder Zierfische)
• Gemüse, Salat, Kräuter, etc.
in einem Kreislauf
Die Nährstoffe werden über das Futter zugegeben.
3. Stephan Senfberg • Aquaponik • 3/2014
Aquaponik ist...
• keineswegs neu, schon die alten Azteken (ca. 1100 v. Chr.)
haben bemerkt, dass ihre Reisernte durch wohlgenährte
Fische gewinnt.
betrieben.
• bedeutet Aquakultur (mit Speise- oder Zierfischen), Gemüse, Salat,
Kräuter, etc. in einem geschlossenen Kreislauf. Nährstoffe werden
über das Futter zugegeben.

Was passiert bei der Aquaponik?
Alte Definition:
De-/Nitrifikation
• Fische fressen (Insekten, Pflanzen, etc.)
• Fische scheiden ihren Kot aus
(Ammonium/Ammoniak NH4+/NH3)
• Umwandlung durch Bakterien in Nitrit
• Umwandlung durch Bakterien in Nitrat (NO3)
• Aufnahme der Nährstoffe durch die Pflanzen
(Aufbereitung des Fischkots zum
Pflanzendünger erfolgreich abgeschlossen)

Was passiert bei der Aquaponik?
Meine NEUE Definition:
Das Leben im See
• Fische fressen (Insekten, Pflanzen, etc.)
• Fische scheiden ihren Kot aus
(Ammonium/Ammoniak)
• Umwandlung durch Bakterien in Nitrit
• Umwandlung durch Bakterien in Nitrat
• Aufnahme der Nährstoffe durch die Pflanzen
Also wie immer?
Ja, der ganz normale
Stickstoffkreislauf!
Aber MIT Wasser!
6. Stephan Senfberg • Aquaponik • 3/2014
Ich habe es noch immer nicht
verstanden, bzw. nicht aufgepasst:
Veget. Pelletfutter
+ Wasser
+ Fische
+ Bakterien
= Fischfilets*
+ gehaltvolles u.

Lebensmittel schmecken gut
(nicht nach Fisch oder so)
und sind gehaltvoll und
frei von Schadstoffen!
*Bei Aquaponik
KANN weder Dünger noch
Antibiotika eingesetzt werden.
Entweder leiden die Fische,
Die Pflanzen, oder die Bakterien.

Und was war jetzt mit dem Stickstoff-
Kreislauf? War das denn wichtig?
Ja!
Pflanzenkultur schlicht weit voneinander entfernt.

Salate / Monat
(Rechnung: 80 Pflanzen x 8,6/Jahr 688 Salate/Jahr
- 10qm Tomaten* (9 Pflanzen je qm u. ca. 6Kg Ertrag/Pflanze/3 Mon.) - ca. 40,5 Kg Tomaten / Monat
(Rechnung: 81 Pflanzen x 6kg x 4 (Erntezyklen/Jahr) = 486kg/Jahr)
- 5qm Gurken (5 Pflanzen je qm u. ca. 5Kg Ertrag/Pflanze/4 Mon.) - ca. 31,2 Kg Gurken / Monat
(Rechnung: 25 Pflanzen x 5kg x 3 (Erntezyklen/Jahr) = 375kg/Jahr)
- 8qm Paprika (9 Pflanzen je qm, ca. 2Kg Ertrag/Pflanze/6 Mon) - ca. 24Kg / Monat
(Rechnung: 72 Pflanzen x 2kg x 2 (Erntezyklen/Jahr) = 288kg/Jahr)
- 10 weitere Meter NFT-Rohr oben (Kräuter, Erdbeeren, etc.) - ca. 6,6 Kg / Monat
- (Rechnung: Pflanzabstand bei 25cm 40Pflanzen, je 1kg x 2 (Erntezyklen/Jahr) = 80kg/Jahr)
Summe: 1,45 to/Jahr oder 121kg/Monat Gemüse/Salat oder knapp 30 Kg po Woche!!!

Wo ist der Haken?
Gefahren und Chancen der Aquaponik für Verbraucher
Risiken
- Dysbalance in Pflanzen- u. Fischkultur (Produzenten u.
Wenig Arbeit (Pflanzen/Ernten-Prinzip, ohne Unkrautprobleme)
