Red Bull Air Race World Championship 2014
Rovinj, 12. - 13.04
The most extreme aerial competition will delight its numerous fans again. The
2014 World Championships introduces track improvements as well as a new
stop - for the first time ever it will be held in Croatia. Eight spectacular Red
Bull Air Races will tour seven countries on three continents. The race track in
Rovinj will be set up along Valdibora, its northern coast, while Rovinj’s islands
and coastal area including the old town centre will play a perfect stage to
this exciting spectacle. Das extremste Flugrennen der Welt wird viele Fans
wieder erfreuen. Die Weltmeisterschaft 2014 bringt Verbesserungen auf der
Bahn, aber auch eine neue Destination - zum ersten Mal in seiner Geschichte
wird es in Kroatien abgehalten, so dass das Wettrennen Red Bull Air Race
mit 8 spektakulären Veranstaltungen in 7 Ländern auf 3 Kontinenten gegen-
wärtig sein wird. Die Flugbahn in Rovinj plant man entlang des Nordufers,
Valdibora, anzulegen, und die Inseln vor Rovinj und das Ufer mit dem alten
Stadtkern werden für dieses aufregende Spektakel eine perfekte Kulisse sein.

nerkloster mit der Kirche zur
Seligen Jungfrau Maria von
Carmel errichtet, aber auch
reich verzierte Paläste, von
denen wir auch noch heute
einige nach ihren gotischen
Fenstern und anderen Details
erkennen können. Die be-
kannteste Novigrader Aristo-
kratenfamilie Rigo übernahm
wahrscheinlich schon damals
wichtige Funktionen in der
Stadt. Doch am bekanntesten
sind ihre Bauten aus späterer
Zeit. Im Jahr 1770 ließen sie
einen luxuriösen Stadtpalast er-
richten, und davor, im Jahr 1750,
den spätbarocken Besitz außer-
halb der Stadt in Karpinjan. Dieser
eindrucksvolle Wohn- und Wirt-
schaftskomplex mit Gebäuden in
Form des Buchstabens U kann
sich einer großzügigen Ausfüh-
rung des Inneren mit Stucco und
Bilddekorationen rühmen. Alles,
obwohl nur von einer Familie,
weist auf die Macht Novigrads
im 18. Jahrhundert hin. Der
Wohlstand jedoch dauerte nicht
lange an. Mit dem Fall Venedigs
teilte Novigrad das Schicksal aller
anderen istrischen Städte. Ein-
hundert Jahre später sammelte
die Gemeinde Geld für den Bau
eines neuen Stadtsymbols - des
Glockenturms - , der Pfarrkirche,
der nach dem Vorbild des Cam-
panile des Hl. Markus in Venedig
gebaut wurde, weil Venedig nicht
aufgehört hatte Vorbild zu sein.
Novigrad
As early as 1149 Novigrad swore loy-
alty to Venice. New defensive walls
were built, possibly on the site of ear-
lier ones, of which only a square tower
near the hotel by the entrance to the
historic core was preserved. Recon-
structed in the 15th c., they now gained
round towers. At the same time, the
Dominican monastery with the Church
of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was built.
Palaces with elaborate decor some of
which can even nowadays be recog-
nized by the Gothic windows and other
details were also built at that time. e
best known Novigrad noble family Rigo,
probably already at the time assumed
important civil functions, however, they
are better known for their later build-
ing activities. In 1770 they built a grand
Communal Palace and before that, in
1750 a Late Baroque stancija outside
the town, in Karpinjan. is impressive
residential-economic complex of build-
ings with a disposition in the shape of
the letter U, boasts a luxurious interior
with stucco and painted decorations.

by one single family, demonstrated
the power of Novigrad in the 18th c.
However, prosperity did not last for
long. With the fall of Venice, Novigrad
shared the destiny of all other Istrian
towns. One hundred years later, the
commune raised money for the con-
struction of the new town symbol - the
belfry of the parish church following
the design of St. Mark’s in Venice - for
Venice was still an inspiration. Schon

Along the climbing paths of Buzet
Buzet, a popular truffle town, abounds in attractive
climbing paths for professionals and recreational
climbers alike.
Auf den Höhenpfaden von Buzet
In Buzet, der berühmten Stadt der Trüffel, findet man
eine Menge von attraktiven Kletterpfaden für profes-
sionelle Kletterer, aber auch für Freizeitbergsteiger.
Sopot, a large slop-
ing amphitheatre, is a grandi-
ose climbing spot on the slope above
Buzet. Its total of 27 paths are mainly difficult
ones although there is a few for recreational climbers. It
is best to visit Sopot in spring when a 30 m high waterfall drops
through a large whole in the slope center. However, in light of its position,
this climbing spot is a distinctively winter one. Even then it can be hot on
a sunny day due to its amphitheater shape.
Sopot, das große Überhangamphitheater, ist ein imposantes Kletterge-
lände auf dem Gefälle oberhalb von Buzet. Von insgesamt 27 Routen sind
die meisten schwierig, aber es gibt auch einige für Sportkletterer. Es ist am
besten, im Frühling nach Sopot zu fahren, wenn durch die große Öffnung im
mittleren Teil des Überhangs ein fast 30 m hoher Wasserfall hinunterrauscht.
Wegen der Kletterrichtungen ist das Gelände jedoch mehr für den Winter
geeignet, aber auch dann kann es durch seine Form eines Amphitheaters
an Sonnentagen sehr warm werden.
Kamena vrata Climbing Spot is suitable for beginners and
recreational climbers impatient for new experience, primarily in view
of its road vicinity and mostly easy climbing routes. This climbing spot
has 21 direction paths developed by Buzet climbers.
Der Kletterpfad Kamena vrata ist für Anfänger und Freizeit-
kletterer geeignet, die auf der Suche nach neuen Herausforderungen
sind, und zwar vor allem wegen der Nähe der Verkehrswege, und der
vorwiegend leichten Routen. Der Kletterpfad hat insgesamt 21 Richtun-
gen, und wurde von Kletterern aus Buzet angelegt.

fall of the Western Roman Empire,
the reign of Germanic kingdoms
and the Byzantine Empire followed
in succession in Istria. However,
social relationships inherited from
Roman times did not change to any
significant extent, until the arrival
of Slavic settlers. The rule of the
Frankish state marked the late 8th
century and the 9th century, and
the beginning of feudalisation. At
war with the Franks, the Croatian
Prince Domagoj razed Umag, after
which the town began to weaken.

Reiches, wechselten sich in Umag,
genau wie in ganz Istrien, die Herr-
scher der germanischen Königreiche
und des Byzantinischen Reiches ab.
Allerdings veränderten sich die sozi-
alen Beziehungen nicht wesentlich,
die aus der römischen Zeit über-
liefert wurden, mit Ausnahme der
Ansiedlung der Slawen. Das Ende
des 8. und 9 Jahrhunderts wurde
geprägt durch den Fränkischen
Staat und dem Beginn des Feuda-
lisierungsprozesses. Der kroatische
Herzog Domagoj hatte Umag in den
damaligen Kriegen mit den Fran-
ken verwüstet, so dass die Stadt
daraufhin abzuschwächen begann.
In 1269, in the late middle ages,
Umag was among the first towns
in Istria to recognise the rule of the
Venetian Republic,a flourishing naval
power, and it was to remain under
Venetian rule until the Republic fell
in the late 18th century.Reference
to the expansion of the town from
the peninsula onto the mainland
was first made in the early 14th
century. The Genoese, struggling
with the Venetians for supremacy
in the Adriatic, burned the town in
1370, destroying the town archives.
Im späteren Mittelalter hatte Umag,
unter den ersten in Istrien, im Jahr
1269 die Herrschaft der Republik
Venedig und ihre wachsende See-
macht anerkannt und blieb unter
ihrer Verwaltung bis zu ihrem Zu-
sammenbruch am Ende des 18.
Jahrhunderts.Die Ausweitung der
Stadt auf das Festland, außerhalb
der Halbinsel, wird erstmals in der
ersten Hälfte des 14. Jahrhunderts
erwähnt. Im Jahr 1370 zündeten die
Genuaner, die damals mit Venedig
um die Vorherrschaft der Adria
kämpften,die Stadt an.Durch diesen
Akt wurde das damalige Stadtarchiv
zerstört.
History of Umag Geschichte von
Umag Umag was founded in Antiquity when the
region’s inhabitants began settling a narrow island
that was gradually broadened by earthworks, mak-
ing it the peninsula we know today. The town was
first mentioned in written documents in the 6th
century as Humagum, and it flourished because of
its favourable position. Namely, it was located on
the road leading south from Aquileia, a stronghold
built by the Romans for the military administration
of Istria and the northern Adriatic. Die Entstehung
von Umag reicht bis in die Antike zurück, als die
Einwohner der umliegenden Gebiete begonnen hat-
ten, sich auf der schmalen Insel niederzulassen. Die
Insel wurde durch Aufschüttung allmählich erweitert
und entwickelte sich so zu der Halbinsel, wie wir sie
heute kennen. In den Schriftquellen wird sie erstmals
im 6. Jahrhundert als Humagum erwähnt und ihre
Entwicklung profitierte vor allem von der günstigen
Lage. Die Gegend von Umag befand sich nämlich
auf dem Weg in Richtung Süden, von Aquileia aus,
welche die Römer als Standort zur militärischen
Kontrolle Istriens und der nördlichen Adria gegründet
hatten. Many years before today’s Umag appeared,
prehistoric hill-forts existed in the surrounding area,
and in early Roman times, a large number of luxurious
villa rusticas (countryside villas), especially along the
coast north of Umag from Zambratija to Katoro. Viele
Jahre vor Entstehung des heutigen Umags standen in
den umliegenden Gebieten prähistorische Festungen
und in der frühen Römerzeit gab es eine größere
Zahl luxuriöser Villen, die sog. Villae rusticae ,vor

Zambratija bis Katoro. Many notable archaeological
sites, in particular, the remains of seaside villas
with mosaic floors, dating back to early Antiquity,
can be found on Cape Katoro and in the area
to its north. The seabed at Katoro has preserved
the remains of quays and jetties, and underwater
research has uncovered many ceramic artefacts,
mainly for kitchen use. In the whirlpool of historical
events, the settlements on Cape Katoro began to
lose their importance, while Umag grew. Aus der

Vodnjan The town was not
established until the Middle Ages,
despite the ruins of a prehistoric
hill-fort near the Church of St. Mary
of Traversa. The name of the town
derives from the Latin vicus tinianus
mentioned in written documents in
1150. As early as 1212, the oldest
church in town, St. James delle
Trisiere, was proclaimed a parish
church. After the period of rule of
the Patriarch of Aquileia and Pula
Commune in the 13th and 14th
cc., in 1331 the town came under
Venetian rule and became an inde-
pendent commune and important
commercial center. Fleeing from
Pula ridden with epidemics,Venetian
provveditori found shelter in town.
The town’s historic core developed
in the area between St. James’s
Church and the Romanesque Church
of St. Blaise, which later became the
parish church.The old Parish Church
of St. Blaise, next to which was a
cemetery, was pulled down in 1760.
to make room for the Baroque three-
aisled church. The belfry beside it,
the tallest one in Istria (62 meters)
was built in the 19th c.
Das Entstehen der Stadtkann erst
seit dem Mittelalter, trotz der Spuren
einer urgeschichtlichen Gradina auf
dem Hügel bei der Kirche der Hl.
Maria Traversa, verfolgt werden. Der
Name der Stadt kommt aus dem
Lateinischen Vicus Atinianus, der in
Quellen aus dem Jahr 1150 erwähnt
wurde. Die älteste Stadtkirche, die
des Hl. Jakob delle Trisiere, wurde
schon 1212 zu einer Pfarrkirche.
Nach einer Zeit unter der Verwal-
tung des Patriarchen von Aquileia
und der Kommune von Pula im
13. und 14. Jh., nahm die Stadt
im Jahr 1331 das Patronat durch
Venedig an, unter dem es eine
selbständige Kommune und ein
wichtiges Handelszentrum wurde.
Auf der Flucht aus Pula versteckten
sich venezianische Providure in
der Stadt. Der Stadtkern entstand
auf dem Gebiet der Kirche des Hl.
Jakobs bis zur romanischen Kirche
des Hl. Blasius, die später die Rolle
der Pfarrkirche übernahm. Die alte
Pfarrkirche des Hl. Blasius, neben
der der Friedhof lag, wurde im Jahr
1760 wegen des Baus der barocken
dreischiffigen Kirche abgerissen. Der
Glockenturm daneben, der höchste
in Istrien (62 Meter), wurde im 19.
Jh. errichtet.

Im Juni führen alle Wege
nach Pula. Die Straßen Pulas
verwandeln sich nämlich in
diesen Tagen zu einer Büh-
ne des bildhaften römischen
Theaters - dem Mittelpunkt
antiker Tragödien und Ko-
mödien. Weibliche Schön-
heiten tragen antike Frisu-
ren und Gewänder, an jeder
Ecke rauben uns historische
Ton- und Lichtspektakel den
Atem, während römische
Festessen und autochthone
istrische Spezialitäten Ihren
Gaumen verwöhnen.
Borisi, the founders of Funtana
It is reasonable to assume that the prominent nobles
Borisi (Boricius, Borisci, Boriš) are the only patrician
family originating from Bar who preserved until the
20th century. It is no longer existent, but the history
of this clan may be traced along the entire Adriatic
coast, from the Venetian terraferma to Bar, from
where they originated. The patrician clan Borisi
embodies ethno-cultural and social interactions,
as well as communication courses and influences
of civilisation heritage of the Adriatic environment.
Whether being nobles, commons or peasants,
people from Bar and its surroundings have always
been jealously guarding their identity, the religious
one in particular, remaining faithful to the Catholic
church and Vicar of Christ on earth even during the
most challenging times. The Borisi moved from Bar
to Istria at the end of the 16th century escaping
Turkish attacks; most probably first to Koper, since
n 1617 they are referred to as nobility in Koper.
Their subordinates followed with their families as
well. Their founder was Bernardo Borisi, who had
two brothers: Francesco and Marc’Antonio; the
latter was a Venetian dragoman in Constantinople;
the elected translator in Constantinople, and the
first Venetian to be named Dragomano grande. The
Borisi referred to their ancestor, the great dragoman
(official translator) when huge expenses regarding
refugees’ accommodation were imposed to them.
In terms of ownership, Funtana was not passed
to Bernardo Borisi directly. In the 15th century
as a part of goods of Saint Mauro, that is, as a
diocesan estate, it was assigned to the cathedral
capitol of Poreč. The canons then ceded the feud
to the pasenatic captain based in Sveti Lovreč,
which was finally sold to Borisi in 1595. Later on,
when the church was built (in 1621) and the life
in the feud was normalised, the capitol of Poreč
assigned this family and its feud the Molindrio bay.

nicht mehr, aber man kann die Vergangenheit dieser
Sippe entlang der adriatischen Küste betrachten
und zwar von der terraferma Venedigs bis zum
Bar, ihrem Stammort. Die Patrizierfamilie Borisi
verkörpert ethnokulturelle und soziale Interaktion
und Kommunikationskurse und Einflüsse des zivili-
satorischen Erbes der Umwelt von Adria. Entweder
als Adliger, Bürger oder Bauern, die Bewohner aus
Bar und Umland bewahrten eifersüchtig ihre Iden-
tität, zumal die religiöse Identität, der katholischen
Kirche und dem Stellvertreter Christi auf der Erde
auch in Zeiten der größten Versuchungen getreu
bleibend. Die türkischen Angriffe zwangen die
Familie Borisi, ende 16. Jh. nach Istrien zu ziehen;
zuerst wahrscheinlich in Koper, da sie um 1617 als
Adliger Kopers erwähnt wurden. Auch die Familien
ihrer Kolonien wurden ihre Nachfolger. Der Altvater
wurde Bernhardo Borisi,der die Gebrüder Francesco
und Marc Antonio hatte; der letztere war ein ve-
nezianischer Dragoman in Konstantinopel und der
erste wurde zwischen venezianischen Bewöhnern
Dragomano grande genannt. Immer wenn sie große
Kosten der Unterbringung von Flüchtlingen hatten,
beriefen sich die Borisi auf ihren Vorfahren, den
großen Dragoman und offiziellen Übersetzer. Als
Besitz gehörte Funtana nicht direkt zu Bernhardo
Borisi. Als Teil des Gutes vom Hl. Mauro, d.h. des
episkopischen Eigentums, wurde Funtana im 15.
Jh. dem Domkapitel von Poreč zugeschrieben Die
Domherren uberließen das Lehnsgut dem Kapitän
von Pazin und der Sitz wurde in Poreč. Im Jahr
1595 wurde das Lehnsgut an Bernhardo Borisi
verkauft und später, als die Kirche ausgebaut
wurde (1621) und das Leben normalisiert, wurde
der Familie Borisi und ihrem Lehnsgut die Bai
Molindrio zugeteilt.

an infectious wound on his thigh.
He carries all the traditional sym-
bols of a pilgrim (a scallop shell
on his chest, a bag, a staff and a
hollowed-out pumpkin). Next to
his feet we find a dog, his faith-
ful companion. It is said that the
statue originally belonged to an
ensemble of statues from a Ren-
aissance polyptych. This, how-
ever, has yet to be confirmed
through stylistic research. Today,
two statues of the Blessed Virgin
and an equestrian statue of St.
Martin, all which according to
past research once formed part
of the Renaissance polyptych
mentioned above, are kept in the
Bishopric Museum of Poreč as
celebrated examples of wooden
sculptures of 16th Venetian prov-
enance in Istria.

ckiger Altar. Die Seiten des Altars
sind mit massiven spiralförmigen
Voluten und Blumengirlanden ge-

der unteren Etage befindet sich
die Statue der Jungfrau Maria mit
dem Jesuskind. In der linken Ni-
sche befindet sich die Statue des
Hl. Dominik mit einem Buch und
einen Lilienzweig in der Hand,
dem Symbol der Reinheit. In der
rechten Nische steht die Statue
der Hl. Katharina von Siena, Non-
ne des Dominikanerordens, die
The Altars of St. Martin’s
Church Tar
On the right-hand side of the church’s
high altar we find a monumental two-
level altar. The sides of the reredos are
decorated with massive snail-shaped
volutes covered with splendid floral
garlands. In the middle niche of the
lower level we see a draped statue of
the Virgin Mary with the child Jesus. In
the left-hand niche stands a statue of
St. Dominic holding a book and a lily
branch - the symbol of purity - in his
hands. The right-hand niche is home
to a statue of the Dominican nun St.
Catherine of Siena, who in her right,
uplifted hand firmly holds a heart as if
she were holding an apple. On the top
level, in the right and left- hand corners
of the altar the free-standing statues of
the apostles St. Peter and St. Paul, with
all their saintly attributes, look down
on us while between them we see the
statue of an unknown saint holding an
open book. This statue may well rep-
resent one of the apostles who wrote
the epistles. Next to this is the fourth
side-altar, a very ostentatious and rustic
version of a 16th century Renaissance
altar, but built a century later. Columns
divide the reredos into three partitions
with niches for statutes of which only
two exist today. On the right-hand side
we see an early Baroque statue of a
saintly bishop, perhaps St. Donatus, the
bishop of Arezzo. In bishopric visitations
from the 17th century he is mentioned
as the namesake of one of the altars in
the church in Tar. In the left niche we
find a finely crafted statue of St. Rocco
, the Patron Saint of people inflicted with
the plague, a deadly disease that raged
many times throughout history, without
mercy, among the local population. An

sehr reich verzierte und rustikale
Version eines Renaissancealtars
aus dem 16. Jahrhundert, der
ein Jahrhundert später gebaut
wurde. Die Säulen gliedern den
Schrein in drei Zonen mit Nischen
für Statuen. Heute sind jedoch
nur noch zwei davon auf dem
Altar vorhanden. Auf der rechten
Seite ist eine frühbarocke Statue
eines Heiligen Bischofs, vielleicht
die des Hl. Donatus, Bischof von
Arezzo, der in den bischöflichen
Besichtigungen des 17. Jahrhun-
derts als Namensgeber für einen
der Altäre in der Kirche von Tar
erwähnt wird. In der linken Nische
steht eine qualitätvoll ausgearbei-
tete Statue des Hl. Rochus, dem
Schutzheiligen der Pestkranken.
Mehrere Male wütete diese töd-
liche Krankheit gnadenlos unter
der einheimischen Bevölkerung.
Die elegante Statue des bärtigen
Heiligen mit halblangem Haar
wird mit einem kurzen Gewand
und einer Wunde am Oberschen-
kel dargestellt. Er ist mit allen
Pilger-Attributen (Muscheln auf
der Brust, einer Tasche, einem
Stock und einem Kürbis) ausge-
stattet und zu seinen Füßen sitzt
ein Hund, sein treuer Begleiter.
Man sagt er hätte ursprünglich
zum skulpturalen Ensemble ei-
nes Renaissance-Flügelaltar ge-
hört, was durch gründliche stilis-
tischen Erforschung festgestellt
werden muss. Zwei Statuen der
Jungfrau Maria und die Reitersta-
tue des Hl. Martin, die, heutigen
Forscherberichten nach, ebenso
den erwähnten Renaissance- Flü-
gelaltar verzierten , werden heute
im Museum der Diözese in Poreč
als besondere Beispiele für Holz-
skulptur aus dem 16 Jahrhundert
venezianische Provenienz in Ist-
rien aufbewahrt.

and the larger one is St. Michael’s
Church the church of the titular dat-
ing from the 11th c. In the sanctuary
is a high, semi-circular apse. On the
side wall, high above the roofing,
original transennae with interlacing
pattern have been preserved. St.
Michael’s Church holds the remains
of Romanesque frescoes. The trial
and stoning of St. Stephen are the
only scenes that can be interpreted
in the apse and present the oldest
scene of St. Stephen’s Martyrdom
in Istria. The best preserved image
is the saint on the right side of the
triumphal arch. The image of a ton-
sured young saint with a crosier
depicts a Benedictine saint, presum-
ably the image of St. Romuald. Both
human figures and architecture are
presented stylized and summarily.
The shapes of figures are defined
by outlines of light and dark colors,
and characteristic red spots on the
cheeks. Both the iconographic and
artistic models are diverse, ranging
from Carolingian ornamental ele-
ments to Hellenistic-Oriental motifs
in clothing. The royal crown is of a
Carolingian type, resembling those
worn by German kings. All the men-
tioned elements are characteristic
features of the international Ben-
edictine monastic painting of the
Ottonian period.

(Vrsar) Von dem
einst mächtigen
Kloster des Hl. Mi-
chael, das mit den
Bischöfen aus Poreč
im Konflikt stand, ist
ein verlassenes und
verwahrlostes Klos-
ter mit zwei Kirchen
übrig geblieben. Die
kleinere Kirche ist
ein frühbyzantini-
sches Bauwerk wo-
bei die grössere Kir-
che, welche auch die
Namensträgerin des Hl. Michael ist,
aus dem 11. Jahrhundert stammt.
Im Inneren steht eine hohe, halb-
runde und von außen hervorgeho-
bene Apsis. In der Seitenwand, hoch
unter dem Dach, sind die originalen
Transennen mit einer geflochtenen
Dekoration erhalten geblieben. In
der Kirche des Hl. Michael gibt es
Reste romanischer Fresken. Die Ver-
urteilung des Hl. Stephans und seine
Steinigung sind die einzigen Bilder,
die in der Apsis zu sehen sind und
zugleich sind sie die älteste Darstel-
lung dieser Themen in Istrien. Die
am besten erhaltene Darstellung
des Heiligen befindet sich auf der
rechten Seite des Triumphbogens.
Eine junge Person mit Tonsur und
einem Bischofsstab zeigt einen
benediktinischen Heiligen. Es wird
davon ausgegangen, dass es sich
hierbei um den Hl. Romualdo han-
delt. Sowohl die Personen als auch
die Architektur werden stilisiert und
summarisch dargestellt. Die Perso-
nen sind mit hellen und dunklen
Konturen gezeichnet worden. Auf
den Wangenknochen sind charak-
teristische rote Flecken zu sehen.

Church of St. Mary of
Lakuć Dvigrad
The ruins of Dvigrad lie to the
west of Kanfanar, situated on a
hill in the Lim valley. The church
of St. Mary of Lakuć is below Dvi-
grad. Built of symmetrical stone
blocks, the church is in the Ro-
manesque style, with semicir-
cular apse and a bell gable on
the facade. There is an interest-
ing baldachin on the facade just
above the entrance door and be-
neath the bell gable. These fine
frescoes were made towards the
end of the 15th century by one
of the best-known Medieval Is-
trian painters, referred to as the
“Colourful Master”, because of
his recognisable, vivid colours
and fantastic colourful effects
that made his works so exqui-
site. The well-preserved fresco
on the façade
of the church
depicts the Vir-
gin Mary who
protects the
parishioners
under her cloak.
Unfortunately,
the lower part
of the fresco
was severely
damaged due
to badweath-
erconditions.
Inside the
church, only the
altar was deco-
rated with fres-
coes, painted
in the divided
fields. Big im-
ages dominate the fields and
the central field depicts Christ
in Majesty. There are numerous
Glagolitic inscriptions all over the
interior of the church.
Kirche der Hl. Maria
von Lakuć Dvigrad
Dvigrad liegt im Lim-Tal, westlich
von Kanfanar. Bei der Ausfahrt
aus Kanfanar, entlang der Gleise,
biegt man nach Dvigrad ab und
findet die Kirche unterhalb des
Ortes. Die Kirche ist ein romani-
scher Bau mit halbkreisförmiger,
geschmückter Apsis und einem
Glockenturm an der Vorderfront.
Sie wurde aus Quadersteinen
erbaut. Eine interessante Be-
sonderheit ist der Baldachin an
der Vorderseite - er befindet sich
über dem Haupteingang der Kir-
che. Die Fresken aus dem Ende
des 15. Jahrhunderts sind das
Werk des sog. „Bunte Meisters“,
eines unbekannten einheimi-
schen Künstlers (dem eine Reihe
von Fresken in Istrien und sogar
drei Skulpturen zugeordnet wer-
den), der aufgrund der außerge-
wöhnlichen koloristische Effekte
so benannt wurde. Die gut erhal-
tene Fresken an der Außenseite
der Kirche, an der Vorderfront
des Baldachins, stellen die Jung-
frau Maria mit einem Umhang
dar, die unter ihrem Umhang die
Gemeindemitglieder schützt. Lei-
der ist gerade der untere Teil des
Freskos nicht erhalten geblieben,
da er dem Einfluss der Zeit am
meisten ausgesetzt war. Im In-
nenraum wurde nur der Schrein
bemalt, Felder in denen grosse
Figuren dominieren. Die zentrale
Darstellung bilden die Felder mit
der Szene Christi in Herrlichkeit.
In der Kirche befinden sich eine
Menge glagolitischer Graffiti.

mussel harvesting and sales are
prohibited, and for such offences
the law provides strict and severe
fines ranging from HRK 10,000 to

Säure anbohrt. Sie wächst äußerst langsam: nach

jährlich und im Hinblick darauf, dass sie mit Jahren
zurückgeht, wird geschätzt, dass eine Einheit von
10 cm an die 100 Jahre alt sein kann!!! Das Fangen,
sowie der Verkauf von Steindatteln sind verboten
und das Gesetz sieht für diese Vergehen strenge
und hohe Strafen, die sich zwischen 10 und 150
tausend HRK bewegen, vor.

The rugged coastline of Kamenjak is
characterised by a great diversity of
marine habitats and rich flora and
fauna. Although extensive research of
biocenosis is yet to come,it is estimated
that the waters of the peninsula are
inhabited by thousands of species of
organisms, among which we should
point out those of economic importance
- fish, crustaceans and molluscs, as
well as numerous protected species.
Die gegliederte Küste von Kamenjak
zeichnet sich durch eine Vielfalt an
Meeresbiotopen und Reichtum der
Flora und Fauna. Obwohl umfassen-
de Untersuchungen von Biozönosen
noch bevorstehen, wird es vermutet,
dass die Gewässer der Halbinsel von
einigen Tausend Organismusarten,
unter denen sich auch wirtschaftlich
wichtige Fische, Krebse und Weichtie-
re, sowie viele gesetzlich geschützte
Arten hervorheben, bewohnt werden.
The shellfish protected by the Nature
Protection Act that inhabit Kamenjak
are noble pen shell (Pinna nobilis),
date mussels and lurid cowry (Luria
lurida). The algae genus Cystoseira
is also protected, as well as sponges
Geodia cydonium, Tethya sp., Axinella
cannabina and Axinella polypoides
and all the sea cucumbers (Holothu-
rioidea). The extremely endangered
seagrass Posidonia oceanica has its
last communities in Istria precisely in
this area. The list of endangered spe-
cies includes the graceful seahorse
(Hippocampus guttulatus), who, to the
surprise of many, belongs to fish. On Kamenjak there were occa-
sional encounters with the loggerhead turtle, bottlenose dolphin
and more recently with the Mediterranean monk seal, which until
recently was thought to be completely gone from the Adriatic Sea.
Due to loss of habitat, some types of gulls (Laridae) and grebes
(Podicipedidae), which form a link between marine and terrestrial
ecosystems, are also protected. Von den Arten, die durch das Um-

von Kamenjak folgende Muscheln: Edle Steckmuschel (Pinna nobilis)

tungras Posidonia oceanica hat gerade in diesem Gebiet ihre letzten
Biotope in Istrien. Auf der Liste gefährdeter Arten befindet sich das
liebliche Haarige Seepferdchen (Hippocampus guttulatus), der zum
Staunen vieler zu Fischen gehört. Sporadische Begegnungen am Kamenjak wurden mit der Unechten
Karettschildkröte, Großem Tümmler und in der neueren Zeit mit der Mittelmeer-Mönchsrobbe, für die
man bis vor kurzer Zeit glaubte, sie seien in der Adria ausgestorben. Wegen dem Rückgang ihrer Biotope
unterliegen dem Schutz auch einige Arten von Möwen (Laridae) und Lappentaucher (Podicipedidae), die
das Verbindungsglied zwischen dem Meeres- und dem Landökosystem bilden.

Mönchsrobbe wird für eins der
meist gefährdeten Säugetiere auf
der Welt gehalten. Es wird geschätzt,
dass die gesamte Weltpopulation
nur einige hundert Einheiten, die
in Nähe der Mittelmeerküste leben,
zählt.Für Jahrhunderte bewohnte die
Mittelmeer-Mönchsrobbe die ganze
Mittelmeerküste, sogar Teile des
Atlantischen Ozeans und in derAdria

People have hunted monk seals since for-
ever, but until the end of the 19th century,
that is, early 20th century, the hunting was
not very intensive and the Mediterranean
monk seal somehow managed to live in
peace.Its relentless exploitation begins at
the turn of the century. Along with merci-
less hunting, marine pollution andcoastal
urbanisation have become big problems
formonk seals, since they need quiet caves
and shoresinaccessible to man to breed
and nurture their young.Such locations
have become rare, and monk sealshave
begun to disappear from the AdriaticSea.
Since 1964 monk seals were listed in the
Red Book as an extinct species, and it was
considered that there were no monk seals
left in the Adriatic.However, since 2003 the
reports on the monk seal beingseen along
the Croatian coast have been increasing.
From 2009 monk sealswere being frequently
seen on Kamenjak,especiallynear the caves.
All this speaks infavour of a slight recovery
of the Adriatic population.The very notion
thatmonk seals are here, gives hope that
the idea of the untouched Mediterranean

The Mediterranean monk seal (Monachusmonachus), sea
man, adriana, sea monk... all these are names for this big
marine mammal with large round black eyes, long moustache
and a large body suited for swimming, up to 3.5 metres
long and weighing up to 400 kilograms. The fur of the monk
seal is gray or brown, glossy and soft. This warm sea seal
with its way of life is related both to the sea and the land.
It feeds on fish, crustaceans and cephalopods. They can
be found in the vicinity of the breeding site, in underwater
caves and on the beaches. They live in small groups of five
to seven seals. The Mediterranean monk seal is considered
to be one of the most endangered mammals in the world.
It is estimated that today the world’s total population is
only a few hundred specimens, and they live along the
shores of the Mediterranean Sea. For centuries, the Medi-
terranean monk seals have inhabited the entire coast of
the Mediterranean, and even a part of the Atlantic coast,
and in the Adriatic Sea they could be found from Istria to
Dalmatia, as well as further south. There were frequent

wurden für die Mönchsrobbe die
Wasserverschmutzung und Urba-
nisierung der Küste zum Problem,
da sie für die Aufzucht ihrer Jungen
ruhige Höhlen und für Menschen un-
zugängliche Strände braucht. Solche
Orte wurden immer seltener und die
Mönchsrobbe begann aus unserem
Meer zu verschwinden. Seit 1964.
wird sie im Roten Buch als ausge-
storben aufgeführt. Aber seit dem
Jahr 2003 vermehren sich die Sich-
tungsmeldungen der Mönchsrobbe
an der kroatischen Adriaküste. Vom
2009 wird sie ständig am Kamenjak,
besonders in der Nähe der Höh-
len, gesichtet. Das alles spricht zu
Gunsten einer langsamen Erholung
der Adriapopulation. Die Tatsache
selbst, dass die Mönchsrobbe hier
ist, flößt Hoffnung ein, dass die Idee
vom unberührten Mittelmeer immer
noch lebt.

Inhabitants of Plomin know that
fronts of their houses, the church,
walls and terraces will be adorned
by a very special plant in the first
clear spring days. Everyone is
happy to see this gentle flower,
which they lovingly call‘our Plomin
bellflower’. In late May and early
June, purple and blue flowers of
this endemic plant transform this
old town above the Kvarner Bay
into one of the most beautiful
destinations in Istria, even for a
short period of time. The Istrian
bellflower or Campanula Istriaca
Feer, as it is known to experts,
is a plant which, apart from the
Plomin region, also grows on the
hills of the Učka Mountain, the
Kalčić and on the rocks of the
Kvarner islands of Cres, Lošinj,

The Italian agile frog
(Rana latastei) is considered to
be one of the most engangered
amphibians in Europe. They are
extremely rare and highly protected.
In Croatia it can only be found in
Central and North Istria, mostly in
the Motovun forest, the Mirna river
valley and its right tributaries - the
Čepić, Zrina and Sluznica brooks.
The Italian agile frog inhabits damp
deciduous forests with rich vegeta-
tion and high levels of subterranean
waters. It highly depends on rivers,
brooks, lakes and their wetlands,
primarily for breeding as the first
3 to 4 months of tadpole life is
exclusively water dependant. After
this period, Italian agile frogs live on
land. Despite their hiberation under
a thick layer of leaves, male frogs
wake up in February and start invit-
ing females by croaking their love
sounds. They are so occupied with
their mating,which can last until late
March, that they go hungry until the
end of the period. The Italian agile
frog belongs to a group of small to
medium-sized frogs. Their charac-
teristic colour is brown with black
and white stomach and a typical
dark patch which looks like a mask
on the lateral side of the head.It
is interesting that these frogs can
long jump up to a 100 m, which is
15 to 20 meters in human terms.

Italienischer (lombar-
discher) Springfrosch
(Rana latastei) gehört zu den meist-
gefährdeten Amphibien in Europa.
Er kommt sehr selten vor, und
steht unter strengem Naturschutz. In
Kroatien finden wir ihn nur auf dem
Gebiet von Zentral- und Nordistrien,
meistens im Wald von Motovun, und
im Tal der Mirna und ihrer rechten
Nebenflüsse Čepić,Zrin und Sluznica.
Der italienische (lombardische)
Springfrosch lebt in feuchten Laub-
wäldern mit reicher Vegetation und
einem hohen Niveau von Untergrund-
gewässern. Er liebt Flüsse, Bäche,
Seen und ihre Moorgebiete,vor allem
wegen derVermehrung,weil sich das
Leben der Kaulquappen in den ersten
3 - 4 Monaten ausschließlich unter
Wasser abwickelt. Nach dieser Zeit
geht der lombardische Springfrosch
ans Land, wo er weiter lebt. Obwohl
sie den Winterschlaf unter einer di-
cken Laub- und Erddecke verbringen,
kommen die Männchen schon im
Februar heraus, und wecken mit
ihrem Liebesquaken die Weibchen,
damit sie sich ihnen anschließen.Das
Paaren kann bis Ende März dauern,
und die Frösche sind so sehr damit
beschäftigt, dass sie bis zum Ende
dieser Zeitspanne hungern. Der
lombardische Springfrosch gehört
zu den kleinen bis mittleren Frosch-
gattungen,hat eine charakteristische
braune Farbe mit weiß-schwarzem
Bauch, und dem typischen dunklen
Teil, der sich wie eine Maske an
den Seiten des Kopfes befindet.
Es ist interessant, zu wissen, dass
dieser Frosch bis zu 100 cm weit
springen kann, was beim Menschen
im Vergleich einen Sprung von 15 -
20 m bedeuten würde.

Welcome to a trail enabling you to discover some
magnificent hidden medieval small towns made of
stone. Unique for its spectacular position above
the carst abyssal cave, the medieval Pazin Cas-
tle, Kaštel (today housing both the Ethnographic
Museum of Istria and the Municipal Museum)
located on the verge of a 130 meters deep abyss.
And that’s why Jules Verne had been so thrilled
by this sight so that he placed a part of the plot
of his novel ‘Mathias Sandorf,’ written in 1885,
right in this setting. While in Pazin also visit the
parish church of St. Nicholas with its magnificent,
precious frescos and ribbed gothic vault with many
colourful coats of arms of old noble families. After
Pazin the trail takes us further to Lindar, a place
that in the Middle Ages along with Gračišće and
Pićan formed a large fortification that was sup-
posed to defend Pazin from the enemy. Find out
about a special cross visiting Gothic chapel of St.
Catherine. Proceed to Salamunišće (Batluga) and
then through the villages of Cere and Gržine you
will arrive to the unique town of Svetvinčenat. With
its grandiose Morosini-Grimani citadel with towers,
parish church, municipal loggia and a line of 16th
century houses of the Renaissance and a town
cistern (šterna) in the middle, Svetvinčenatreally
belongs to a range of the most attractive Venetian
creations of that period effected in this region.
We move on towards Žminj, an important road
junctionin the old times, featuring the Calvary from
1720. Once doubly fortified, Žminj, today preserves
a part of the ancient Citadel i.e., one of the former
four round towers and one wing of the castle on
the opposite of which there is a nicely decorated
public cistern dating to 1863. Don’t miss to visit
the parish church of St.Michael built during 17-18
centuries on the spot of the former one dating
from 12 c. and the chapel of St. Trinity depicted by
frescos.Take a short refreshing break here and then
passing through KatunLindarski and Lindar return
to Pazin. Otherwise, you can choose an alternative
road from Svetvinčenatto Žminj through Kanfanar.
Kanfanar developed in 17th century by settlers of
the surviving population from the nearby Dvigrad.
Do not miss visiting the famous stone pulpit pla-
ced on six pillars with 13th century low-set relief.

Gračišće und Pićan ein Ort, der das Wehrsystem,
das Pazin vor den Feinden schützen sollte, bildete.
Heute ist Lindar ein stilles und mystisches Dorf,
bekannt wegen eines seltsamen Kreuzes und die
gotische Kirche der Hl. Katharina. Wenn wir in
Richtung Salamušće (Batluga) weiterfahren, bis
Cere und Gržini, gelangen wir in das einzigartige
Savičenta. Der zentrale Platz ist sehr harmonisch,
umgeben von dem imposanten Kastell Morosini-
Grimani, mit Türmen, mit der Pfarrkirche, mit der
Loggia und einer Reihe Renaissancehäuser aus
dem 16.Jh. und mit der städtischen Zisterne in
der Mitte. Begeben wir uns weiter in Richtung
Žminj, wo in den alten Zeiten ein wichtiger Ver-
kehrknotenpunkt, war auf dem sich noch immer
der Kalvarienberg aus dem 1720 befindet. Einst
war der Ort durch zwei Mauern umgeben, heute
ist noch ein Teil des alten Kastells übrig, d.h. einer
von vier runden Wehrtürmen sowie ein Flügel der
Svetvinčenat

Befestigungsmauer, gegenüber dem sich eine schön
verzierte Zisterne aus dem Jahr 1863 befindet.
Wenn Sie durch den Ort spazieren, sollten Sie un-
bedingt die Kirche des Hl. Michaels, die im 17.-18.
Jh. gebaut wurde, besuchen. Diese Kirche wurde
auf die Basis einer älteren Kirche aus dem 12.Jh.
gebaut. Neben dieser Kirche steht noch die Kirche
der Hl. Dreieinigkeit, die Wandmalereien aufweist.
Machen Sie hier eine Pause, erfrischen Sie sich,
um dann über Katun Lindarski und Lindar zurück
nach Pazin zu fahren, wo sie auch gestartet sind.
Für diejenige, die die Alternative gewählt haben,
hinter Svetvinčenat begeben sie sich in Richtung
Kanfanar. Als sehr malerisches Dorf am Rande des
Limski-Tals entwickelte sich Kanfanar im 17.Jh., als
die Einwohner aus Dvigrad, die die Pest überlebt
hatten, hier ankamen. In Dvigrad sind heute nur
romantische Ruinen zu sehen. Kanfanar beherbergt
ein wertvolles Kircheninventar, das sich heute in
der Pfarrkirche des Hl.Silvesters befindet.Nicht zu
versäumen ist in dieser Kirche der steinige und
sechsbeinige Altar, dessen Relief aus dem 13.Jh. ist,
und der eine stolze Heilige aus Dvigrad, die zwei
Paläste auf den Händen hält, darstellt.

Trails and Paths of the Labin Region Rabac - Labin
Labin Tourist Board has issued a new map of trails and paths in Labin area which
promotes the natural beauties and historical and cultural heritage of Labin, Ra-
bac and their surroundings. Along with an overview map with seven paths and
walking trails marked by distinctive colors, the guests can also read short sto-
ries, legends, and interesting facts related to a particular path and trail. Divine
Springs Trail, Sage Trail, Hidden Charms Promenade and protected landscape area
of Sentona’s Trail Labin - Rabac are a must-see for all nature lovers and sports
amateurs. Discover the legend of buried Roman treasure on St. Florentius’ Trail
in Kranjci, and walk down the Trail of Holy Women to explore the beauties of the
local religious heritage.
