a short reflection on cultural and personal value of painting in times of shift of perception, social and cultural responsibility, digital benefits and its challenges within national power struggles, despite global and local imbalances.
In seinen Ausführungen

The document discusses the benefits of exercise for mental health. It notes that regular physical activity can help reduce anxiety and depression and improve mood and cognitive function. Exercise causes chemical changes in the brain that may help boost feelings of calmness and happiness.
The document provides background on a manned mission to Mars in the 2030s. John Allen is born on Mars in 2018 and returns to Earth in 2028 after 18 years away. He struggles to adjust to life on Earth and relates differently to his half-sister Sammy due to his accelerated development on Mars under constant surveillance. The document explores what life may be like for the first humans born and raised on another planet.
This document discusses the relationship between space and narrative identity, and how they are constructed through digital and nonlinear media. It explores how time-based media has replaced written and aural narration by proposing different scales for measuring and editing narratives. Research is seen as being replaced by appropriation and market forces. Painting is discussed as using spatial-narrative codes to produce multiple stories without main plots or endings. The body and identity are seen as using sameness upon spatial and temporal heterogeneity for multiple narratives. The author, Klaus Hu, is introduced as focusing his work on narrative and spatial concepts using various media.

What is painting today? by Klaus Hu
1. WHAT IS PAINTING TODAY? by KLAUS HU
What is painting today? A senseless task of self reflection? An art historical canon? A
financial asset for the 1% in times of ecological shift, over use of resources and GDP
balances? To tackle some of the questions inherent in the solitary practice called
“painting”, that joins the solitary process, with those of writing or those composing a
musical score, there are some differences at stake.
First: material and a studio is needed (or a cave, like Altamira and Lascaux). Second:
the work/life balance is as complicated as eg. for an astronaut, being guided by
peers, assistances, technic, science and economic requests. Third: The publishers
and the “readers” may be quite different, than expected. Fourth: There is no true
reward.
I had an idea, while dreaming about structures unresolved, about the futures role of
painting as a frozen or digitized attachment into a space probe, lifted into a 200,000
year mission. As this idea is, philosophically, as random, as Elon Musks car in space,
namely litter and trash, the core idea of communication within a timely different
species or human generation is challenging.
May be the graffiti in Altamira and Lascaux have been drawn by kids, while the
elders prepared their next days hunt by digestion of hallucinogen mushrooms, I
cannot resolve, but any painting process that tries to make contact with a
distinguished time line than your own, knows, the reward will not be yours.
There always have been human projects, that have been or will try to communicate
with a different perception, like the radioactive waste of the 20th and 21th century,
lasting for the next 250 K years, while no one knows at this moment, if the economic
and cultural production will survive the next hundred years. So painting is a failed
project?
No. We are still incapable (except some statistical hick ups translated into sound as
eg. the gravity lines produced by a black hole) to listen to the sound of macro scale
universe, nor are we capable to listen to the sounds produced on micro levels of the
protons, neutrons and even smaller strings (if they do exist)…
So painting, as an excerpt or an idea, whether as conceptual reference or as social
momentum bears the suffering, of not knowing how it may be read in a distant future
or in a distant geographical galaxy. This unbearable Sein of exclusion weighs on the
painting itself, whether as process or as object. It bears more heavier, than the
amount of digital data of selfies as information stored on servers, that due its need
on energy (electricity), could possibly last only for a short time span.
In contrast the hunting scenes of Altamira and Lascaux (even if drawn by youngsters
as graffiti), survived already 30 to 40 K years.
Does this make me / us complicit, focused unto a sole definition, a mathematical
formula, science is so proud of?…I doubt.
2. It makes me more home sick of a future I cannot apprehend, nor precognize, nor
even dream of, even when taking hallucinogens to reconnect my synapses to a
different or untrained cultural perception. Its this lack of wisdom, lack of “surround
time vision”, that even Kubrick's “2001” had problems of finding (a visual)
representation at the end of the film.
But painting is not the end. Its always at the beginning of it all: Even if humanity is
posing a threat towards this tiny planet, in an era, where painting is part of the
creative mind, it may find new interconnections, dependencies, paths and new ways
beyond self reflection, embracing a planetary mind within micro and macro. (in
contrast to Cern in Geneva, using immense energy resources, only to prove a
theory in an experimental chamber (cave). )
The analogy of the artists studio and the cave, the astronauts space ship and the
neutrino in a ring chamber are for me the same conditions (within different energy
resources needed) of human mind, to explore a true nature within. As language is
cultural and economic coded, science and art may bear some related questions, but
try to prove different axioms, already set by coincidence. If coincidence / the
difference between the 1 and the 0 is the line, then the 0.0001 is the color, which, in
association to music and sound may prove nothing than the limitation of perception
and the conceptual construction itself. Theory and practice may be intertwined in art
and science, but as painting proves, in times of digital copying and distribution, the
coincidence and the existence of this universe may bear the same patterns: >
uncertainty.
This uncertainty is on one side / like other human constructs / independent from
human mind settings. It may be the micro — macro universe itself. This is not to
prove. This is not to be contested. But there are some signs (in history) as well as in
current science (cosmology) this may be the fact.
If inflation and the thesis of the big bang bears today around 28 theories and counter
theories..well, do I have then to prove a painting? Does it exist? Is it a less harmful
way of communication, of theory and approval? Of existence and of questioning
existence?
It seems, that we still have the same mind set of Altamira and Lascaux, when it
comes to analogies, despite being capable of transforming resources into proof and
matter, and new theories and new proofs…the mind, including painting is still stuck in
the cave age of fire and shadow, and is still in search for a vehicle for the next days
hunt (of the deer).
3. WAS IST MALEREI HEUTE? KLAUS HU
Was ist Malerei heute? Eine sinnlose Aufgabe der Selbstreflexion? Ein
kunsthistorischer Kanon?
Nein.
