Future of education project overview oct 2018 lrFuture Agenda
Future of Education
The broadening world of education is undergoing several major shifts. Driven in part by technology innovation and new business models, the learning process is being reinvented and there is a transformation of education economics and outcomes. Alongside this, there are government imperatives to improve access and address the growing requirement for flexible knowledge workers with transferable skills who can adapt to the changing job market. An ageing workforce also means that there is an increasing need for lifelong learning and re-skilling. In addition there is an increasing demand for a more personalised, immersive and mobile learning experience. All this is challenging the traditional expectations around higher education and the role that universities should play. While countries such as Finland and Singapore are consistently seen as leaders in the field, other nations are trying hard to catch up.
Ahead of a series of global expert events during 2019, this is an overview of the Future of Education project. It provides some background on Future Agenda and preceding multi-nation programmes, highlights some of the questions being raised and outlines options for organisations around the world to get involved. Different governments, technology companies, universities and education service providers are collaborating to support this programme that will develop a clear, shared and detailed view of how the future of education may unfold. If you would like to join in and host one of these events in your region, do let us know (tim.jones@futureagenda.org) and we can integrate that into the planning.

The Global Information Technology Report 2014 examines the rewards and risks of big data. It features the latest Networked Readiness Index rankings based on data from 148 economies. Several chapters discuss how organizations can leverage big data through improved data management, policies that balance risks and rewards, and building trust through regulation. Overall, the report advises that both public and private sectors will need to adapt to make sense of and obtain value from the vast amount of new data being created.
The I-CAN Tool and Managing Information and Communication Technology (ICT) In...Waqas Tariq
This document summarizes an ongoing research project investigating innovation management in the Australian ICT sector. It aims to foster ICT innovation through developing an application called I-CAN (Innovation by Collaborative Anonymous Networking). I-CAN allows for anonymous collaboration to overcome cultural barriers like "tall poppy syndrome" that inhibit innovation. The paper also analyzes 10 successful ICT innovations to understand common success traits and classify innovation origins. Key findings are that most ICT innovations stem from intrinsic/extrinsic motivation, technological evolution, or improving previous ideas.
Technology innovation hubs are physical spaces that have emerged across Africa to support the growth of technology communities and entrepreneurship. They provide coworking spaces, access to high-speed internet and resources, and opportunities for collaboration and learning. By bringing together talented young people, they help fill gaps in support structures for technology innovation. Examples discussed include iHub in Nairobi, ActiveSpaces in Cameroon, and iceAddis in Ethiopia. These hubs aim to catalyze technology and economic development by providing the physical and social infrastructure needed for digital communities to evolve.
The document discusses the potential of mobile phones to drive social and economic development. It notes that while mobile phones have revolutionized communication, there is no evidence they have significantly addressed development challenges. To fully realize their potential, barriers like connectivity, access to information, and usability must be overcome. A bottom-up approach is needed that empowers local communities and entrepreneurs to develop mobile services for their needs. Addressing technological and skills gaps through collaboration between different sectors can help mobile technologies better meet development goals.
This document discusses the environmental impact of information and communication technologies (ICT) and e-waste. It notes that while the ICT sector accounts for about 2% of global carbon emissions, e-waste is growing rapidly at 20-50 million tons per year. Reusing old computers through thin client solutions and virtualization can help reduce e-waste by extending the lifespan of hardware. The document also recommends strategies like avoiding planned obsolescence in software and developing applications simply to reduce the environmental footprint of ICT.

NETWORK MEDIA ATTENTION AND GREEN TECHNOLOGY INNOVATIONIJMIT JOURNAL
This paper will provide a novel empirical study for the relationship between network media attention and green technology innovation and examine how network media attention can ease financing constraints. It collected data from listed companies in China's heavy pollution industry and performed rigorous regression analysis, in order to innovatively explore the environmental governance functions of the media. It found that network media attention significantly promotes green technology innovation. By analyzing the inner mechanism further, it found that network media attention can promote green innovation by easing financing constraints. Besides, network media attention has a significant positive impact on green invention patents while not affecting green utility model patents.

Current Disruptions in Media: Earthquakes or New Openings? Stanford as CatalystMartha Russell
Across the globe, new word-of-mouth messaging methods are emerging. Many of these involve new technologies. The strategic use of media has become a game changer for both local and global businesses. Traditional media platforms are outpaced by the speed of flash movements as they unfold. Technical discoveries outpace the scientific journals available to announce them. Journalists, entertainers, academics, scientists, and citizens are experimenting with new tools and platforms for content creation, consumption and curation.
When the news about Tahir Square, or Occupy Wall Street or, more recently the Brazilian protests, hit the headlines of newspapers and magazines, they were already outdated. Documentaries were equally incapable of tracking and fully describing these movements. Traditional narratives – and the technologies used to tell them - fall short of accurately portraying the ideas and behaviors that are emerging through new modes of communication. Information travels so fast, that news is no longer "new". Ubiquitous media disintermediates traditional business ecosystems. And every company must take on roles of a media company.
The world of digital content is experiencing an explosion of innovation in both creation and consumption of media. It may well have been consumer applications that ignited the transformation, but business, enterprise and government interests have joined the party. Across the entire innovation ecosystem of media, new technologies and new uses of it by people are creating a sea change in the way people participate and in the responses they expect, Streaming coverage, both amateur and professional – both business and community, is powered by cutting edge technology in combinations of smartphones, 4G, drone cameras and, even, Google Glass can report on events and movements, products and services. The new role of the Chief Digital Officer has emerged in many organizations - to help management bridge the changing roles usually played by Chief Information Officers, Chief Marketing Officers, and Chief Technology Officers.
Labs affiliated with mediaX at Stanford University study how people and information technology interact. We invite discovery collaborations on the future of content for business, education, and entertainment.
WHAT NEXT FOR DIGITAL SOCIAL INNOVATION?
Realising the potential of people and technology to tackle social challenges
Matt Stokes, Peter Baeck, Toby Baker
The document discusses the role of online networks in social innovation. It presents a research framework with 4 perspectives:
1) The technology perspective looks at different types of online platforms that enable social innovation.
2) The community perspective examines how communities, knowledge, and innovation are impacted by ICT tools.
3) The network perspective analyzes random, scale-free, and small-world networks and how information spreads through them.
4) The critical perspective considers issues like the digital divide, privacy, and challenges of online activism that are relevant for social innovation.
This document summarizes Dr. Thomas Methven's work developing an online tool called "well-sorted.org" to help facilitate idea generation and organization at academic workshops and meetings. The tool allows participants to submit ideas beforehand which are then automatically sorted into logical groups. At the events, this pre-sorting saves substantial time by avoiding lengthy brainstorming and grouping discussions. Feedback from organizers and attendees was very positive, with the tool significantly reducing their workload and allowing more productive use of meeting time.

Digital connectivity is a disruptive trend that is influencing society and business through increased online connectivity. It is reshaping industries like travel, health, and retail. Travel companies are implementing virtual reality and wearable tech to enhance the customer experience.
