The effect of nutritional supplements for
physical health and mental health
The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) defines a
nutritional supplement as a product that:
 Supplements the food you eat;
 contains one or more dietary ingredient (including vitamins;
minerals; herbs or other botanicals; amino acids, and other
substances);
 comes in pill, capsule, tablet, or liquid form; and
 is labeled as a dietary supplement.
There are different types of dietary, or nutritional, supplements.
Vitamin and mineral supplements are types of dietary supplements
containing micronutrients meant to help a healthy body function
smoothly. Herbal (or botanical) supplements are dietary supplements
that have a medicinal purpose. Herbal supplements generally support
a specific area of the body’s health, such as the liver, bones or skin.
Nutritional supplements are used for many purposes. They can be
added to the diet to boost overall health and energy; to provide immune
system support and reduce the risks of illness and age-related
conditions; to improve performance in athletic and mental activities; and
to support the healing process during illness and disease. However, most
of these products are treated as food and not regulated as drugs are.
Vitamins and minerals are micronutrients that serve a specific purpose
and benefit the body in a unique way. For example, vitamin A supports
vision and bone growth, whereas vitamin E strengthens the immune
system and helps repair DNA. Vitamin and mineral deficiency can impair
the body’s ability to heal and protect itself.
Taking vitamins does not make up for an unhealthy diet, and vitamins
are an insufficient substitute for nutrients from fresh fruits, vegetables,
and whole grains. However, a general multivitamin and mineral
supplement can be a good safeguard against periodic vitamin shortfalls
in your diet.
 The use of herbs and animal glands as medicines dates back to the
origins of civilized man. The earliest known written records of herbal
medicines were inscribed on six-thousand-year-old clay tablets written
by the Sumerians, who lived on the banks of the Tigris and Euphrates
Rivers in what is now Iraq. The tablets showed use of many medicinal
plants including opium poppy, thyme, licorice and mustard plant.
 Moreover, the Asian cultures, particularly in the Sichuan province of
China, have a long recorded history of herbal use dating back more
than three thousand years.
 As early as 776 BC, the Greek Olympians used substances, such as
mushrooms, dried figs, and strychnine, to enhance performance.
 Commercial Food Processing:
 Almost all supermarket foods are processed
 Even our wheat, flour, rice grain are processed
 White sugar has lost almost all nutrition value during processing
 Wheat grain losses it’s all nutrients value
• 60% of the Calcium
• 40% of Chromium
• 85% of Magnesium
• 77% of Potassium
• 16% of Selenium
• 76% of Vitamin B’s
• 33% of of Protein
• Almost all fiber
 Soil Depletion
 Modern mass production agriculture depletes nutrients from the soil
without replenishing them
 They use synthetic fertilizers. These synthetic fertilizers does not
contains the spectrum of minerals which normally found in natural
fertilizers.
 Compared to 50 years ago we are getting less minerals in the food.
 Food Storage and Transportation
 Chemical are used to preserve for long period. By using the chemical
foods are lose their nutrients value, even though may look like same.
 We are eating chemical that are sprayed on them.
 Cooking of food
Most of the foods are we eat by cooking not raw. Cooking food have
the less nutrient value than raw.
 In a research it is found that compared to fried fish baked or boiled
fish have sufficient amount of Omega 3 fatty acid. It is useful to
decrease the heart attack rate.
 Home Storage of food
 In the refrigerator food loss it’s nutrition value. Though the
food are look like same before 1 or 2 weeks ago.
 Pesticides in food
 Pesticide is a poison for bug and for human. Most foods are
contains pesticides.
 Pesticides are used for growing plants, kill the bugs and storage the
food for long time.
 We are eating foods with pesticides. These pesticides are damaged
the food nutrition value when we are eating these foods.
 Genetically modified foods
Millions of acres of genetically modified food has been cultivate.
These food are pesticides for insects.
 These modified food creates problem for human also. It has a bad
effect on brain, lungs, intestine, kidney and liver.
 Environmental pollution
 We dump nearly more than 15 billion kg of chemical into our
environment every year
 Our scientist are research atomic explosion on air, water and in
land. These radio active chemical and gas polluting our land, water
and water. The plants, foods are also polluted with this reaction.
 We have no choice to eat food, breath air and drink water.
 Chronic Stress
 Chronic stress produce hormones that have a long term weakening
effect. It cause various disease.
 Supplements reduce the detrimental effects of chronic stress.
 Old age
 When our age getting more than 55+ our digestive power is also
get old. In that time we take less food than earlier age. In that case
supplements are help to increase the digestion rate and it fulfill our
body nutrients level.
 Children/Teenager food habis
 Children and teenagers are taking the unhealthy junk foods like
pizza, soda water, cold drinks, French fries, candy and other junk food.
 These food habits increase the heart disease, liver problem.
 Pregnancy
 In the time of pregnancy food supplement necessary for mother and
child. It reduce the risk miscarriage or pregnancy complication and to
have a healthier baby.
It is accepted in mainstream medicine to prescribe mothers with folic
acid, calcium an iron tablets.
Doctors are also prescribe DHA capsules for improving mother and
child intelligence.

Why the Nutritional Supplements Need for Our Body?

  • 1. The effect of nutritional supplements for physical health and mental health
  • 2. The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) defines a nutritional supplement as a product that:  Supplements the food you eat;  contains one or more dietary ingredient (including vitamins; minerals; herbs or other botanicals; amino acids, and other substances);  comes in pill, capsule, tablet, or liquid form; and  is labeled as a dietary supplement. There are different types of dietary, or nutritional, supplements. Vitamin and mineral supplements are types of dietary supplements containing micronutrients meant to help a healthy body function smoothly. Herbal (or botanical) supplements are dietary supplements that have a medicinal purpose. Herbal supplements generally support a specific area of the body’s health, such as the liver, bones or skin.
  • 3. Nutritional supplements are used for many purposes. They can be added to the diet to boost overall health and energy; to provide immune system support and reduce the risks of illness and age-related conditions; to improve performance in athletic and mental activities; and to support the healing process during illness and disease. However, most of these products are treated as food and not regulated as drugs are. Vitamins and minerals are micronutrients that serve a specific purpose and benefit the body in a unique way. For example, vitamin A supports vision and bone growth, whereas vitamin E strengthens the immune system and helps repair DNA. Vitamin and mineral deficiency can impair the body’s ability to heal and protect itself. Taking vitamins does not make up for an unhealthy diet, and vitamins are an insufficient substitute for nutrients from fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. However, a general multivitamin and mineral supplement can be a good safeguard against periodic vitamin shortfalls in your diet.
  • 4.  The use of herbs and animal glands as medicines dates back to the origins of civilized man. The earliest known written records of herbal medicines were inscribed on six-thousand-year-old clay tablets written by the Sumerians, who lived on the banks of the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers in what is now Iraq. The tablets showed use of many medicinal plants including opium poppy, thyme, licorice and mustard plant.  Moreover, the Asian cultures, particularly in the Sichuan province of China, have a long recorded history of herbal use dating back more than three thousand years.  As early as 776 BC, the Greek Olympians used substances, such as mushrooms, dried figs, and strychnine, to enhance performance.
  • 5.  Commercial Food Processing:  Almost all supermarket foods are processed  Even our wheat, flour, rice grain are processed  White sugar has lost almost all nutrition value during processing  Wheat grain losses it’s all nutrients value • 60% of the Calcium • 40% of Chromium • 85% of Magnesium • 77% of Potassium • 16% of Selenium • 76% of Vitamin B’s • 33% of of Protein • Almost all fiber
  • 6.  Soil Depletion  Modern mass production agriculture depletes nutrients from the soil without replenishing them  They use synthetic fertilizers.
