Abstract

The performance of variable compression ratio (CR)diesel engine using palm oil
blended diesel fuel is investigated experimentally.
The performances of High speed diesel (HSD) and blends of 10, 30, 50, 70 and 100%
palm oil based biodiesel are tested using variable compression ratio diesel engine.
Introduction

The world at present heavily depends upon petroleum fuels for
transportation. The rise in price of the major automobile fuels has been
one of the major global problems in the recent times. The price rise of
fuels is even linked to the global economy. There is rapid depletion of
petroleum reserves, high price on oil import, harmful effects of various
exhaust emissions on human beings and environment. These are the
factors to search for alternative fuels. So, the wide research work is going
on throughout the world for bio-diesel fuels as an alternative for
automobiles

Diesel mode: Power 3.5 KW

Speed 1500 rpm ,
Injection variation 0-250

Conclusions
It is observed that
‱ Brake thermal efficiency (BTE)increases as the percentage of biodiesel is increased,
reaches a maximum at 50% biodiesel, and decreases subsequently.
‱ For the blend B50 the improvement in BTE is found to be 26.3, 21.5 and 14.7% at

compression ratios of 16, 17 and 18 respectively under full load condition.
‱The brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) is the lowest for the blend B70 (30% diesel+
70% palm oil)and is 10.3% less than that of HSD.
‱ The exhaust gas temperature(EGT) is 11% more than the diesel forB30, i.e., 70%

diesel+ 30% palm oil.
This purports the fact that palm oil based biodiesel can be blended with HSD to derive
economical advantage

  • 2. Abstract The performance of variable compression ratio (CR)diesel engine using palm oil blended diesel fuel is investigated experimentally. The performances of High speed diesel (HSD) and blends of 10, 30, 50, 70 and 100% palm oil based biodiesel are tested using variable compression ratio diesel engine.
  • 3. Introduction The world at present heavily depends upon petroleum fuels for transportation. The rise in price of the major automobile fuels has been one of the major global problems in the recent times. The price rise of fuels is even linked to the global economy. There is rapid depletion of petroleum reserves, high price on oil import, harmful effects of various exhaust emissions on human beings and environment. These are the factors to search for alternative fuels. So, the wide research work is going on throughout the world for bio-diesel fuels as an alternative for automobiles
  • 4. EXPERIMENTAL SETUP Engine Specification Single cylinder 4 stroke water cooled stroke 110 mm bore 87.5 mm. Diesel mode: Power 3.5 KW , CR range 12:1-18:1 , Speed 1500 rpm , Injection variation 0-250 BTDC. Dynamometer: Type eddy current

Conclusions It is observed that ‱ Brake thermal efficiency (BTE)increases as the percentage of biodiesel is increased, reaches a maximum at 50% biodiesel, and decreases subsequently. ‱ For the blend B50 the improvement in BTE is found to be 26.3, 21.5 and 14.7% at compression ratios of 16, 17 and 18 respectively under full load condition. ‱The brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) is the lowest for the blend B70 (30% diesel+ 70% palm oil)and is 10.3% less than that of HSD. ‱ The exhaust gas temperature(EGT) is 11% more than the diesel forB30, i.e., 70% diesel+ 30% palm oil. This purports the fact that palm oil based biodiesel can be blended with HSD to derive economical advantage
