                              PROJECT SYNOPSIS

   1) Project Title:
Multi-Interface Multi-Channel for Hybrid Wireless Mesh Networks.

   2) Domain :
          Networking - Wireless Networking.

   3) Problem statement:
Implementation of MIMC for hybrid wireless mesh networks to enhance
the performance metrics such as packet loss, through put and delay.

   4) Literature Survey:
I) Carine Toham, Francois Jan and Andrzej Duda Orange Labs, Lannion, France
Grenoble Informatics Lab, Grenoble, France “OLSR Enhancement for Multi-
Interface Multichannel Ad Hoc Networks”
Description: We address the problem of improving the throughput in multi-
hop ad hoc networks. Many approaches can be considered to address this issue. We
focus on those that imply the use of multiple radio interfaces with separate radio
channels In this context, we need to address two important issues, namely channel
assignment and routing We propose a throughput-oriented scheme called IC2A2R.
It allows nodes to use the best channel available in their neighborhood based on a
channel selection algorithm. It also extends the OLSR protocol with a new routing
metric to take into account both channel diversity and channel alternation
[Simulation tests of the enhanced OLSR protocol show that it significantly
improves the throughput and outperforms existing solutions such as WCETT

Grenoble, France “Multi-interfaces and Multi-channels Multi-hop Ad hoc
Networks: Overview and Challenges”
Description: Mobile ad hoc networks have typically used the IEEE 802.11
MAC protocol with a single interface and a unique channel to transfer data. The
trend to use multiple interfaces and multiple channels was only in mesh networks
or in cellular networks. This paper is a state of art on multi-hop ad hoc networks
where one uses more than one interface and more than one channel. We analyzed
recent advances concerning MAC protocols and adapted routing protocols. This
description of related work is followed by a discussion on open research issues
related to this theme. We focus on throughput oriented approaches.

III) Shinsue Kajioka, Naoki Wakamiya, Hiroki Satoh,Kazuya Monden, Masato
Hayashi,Susumu Matsui, and Masayuki Murata.”Implementation and Evaluation
of Multichannel Multi-Interface Routing Mechanism with QOS-
Consideration for Ad-Hoc Networks”, Hindawi publishing Corporation
jan-2010.
Description: To accommodate real-time multimedia application while
satisfying application-level QoS requirements in a wireless ad-hoc network, we
need QoS control mechanisms. We proposed a new routing mechanism for a
wireless ad-hoc network composed of nodes equipped with multiple network
interfaces. By embedding information about channel usage in control messages of
OLSRv2, each node obtains a view of topology and bandwidth information of the
whole network. Based on the obtained information, a source node determines a
logical path with the maximum available bandwidth to satisfy application-level
QoS requirements. In this paper, we evaluated feasibility of the proposal through
simulation and practical experiments and confirmed that our proposal effectively
transferred multimedia packets over a logical path avoiding congested links.

   5) Project Description:

B10 Project Synopsis

Wireless mesh networks (WMN): It is a self organized and self configured
network without centralized control, with the feature of multi-hop and limited
energy.
WMN consist of 3 types.
Infrastructure: Clients gain access to each other through routers and are not
actively involved in routing and forwarding of packets.
Client: Clients can communicate with each other directly without involving
routers.
Hybrid: It is the combination of ‘Infrastructure’ and ‘Client’ type.
Routing is a critical task in WMN as the nodes are moving. Routing protocols are
divided into 2 categories;
Reactive protocols: Routes are established only when required by flooding of route
request packet (RRP).
Proactive routing protocols: Routes are established before the actual usage.

OLSR (Optimized Link State Routing) :
OLSR is proactive protocol. It uses 2 messages first, the HELLO messages
& the second called as TC(topology control). The HELLO messages are
periodically sent so that each node can discover its neighbors. They advertise the
links between a MPR (Multi-Point Relay) node and each of its neighbors that has
selected it as an MPR.Only MPR nodes are allowed to periodically broadcast or
relay TC messages so that all nodes can have a global topological view of the
network. MPRs are periodically selected by each node and their identities are
notified through hello messages.
Thus, hello messages advertise MPR node identities and build up one-hop routing
table for each node. Then, TC messages allow nodes to complete computing of
their routes towards any destination in the network by advertising vicinity links of
MPRs.

The enhancement of existing OLSR protocol, to provide the features of MIMC, the
following are considered.
1) Channel quality evaluation.
Department of Information Science & Engg, BVBCET Page 3
B10 Project Synopsis

Evaluated by neighbor-hood channel discovery, channel state notification (by
considering a particular node's
load, its availability & packet error rate).
2) Channel selection
There are a set of channels for each node to be shared. The HELLO messages
contain set of channels shared & those which are not currently in use.
Corresponding evaluating metric (such as cost, delay etc) for the channels, are also
known.
So a channel is selected which has least cost.)
3) Enhanced Routing metric to be considered are channel alternation, channel
quality, Hop number.

   6) Software specifications:
         i) NS-2 simulator

         ii) C++

iii) Plug in to support multiple-interface in NS-2.

   7) Feasibility study:
                i. Implementation can be done in c++ and NS-2, which we are already
familiar with, so the project is technically feasible.

ii. Plug in required to support multiple -interface multi-channel is
                        already available.

   8) Team information:

Batch Roll no USN Name Signature

We focus on those that imply the use of multiple radio interfaces with separate radio channels In this context, we need to address two important issues, namely channel assignment and routing We propose a throughput-oriented scheme called IC2A2R. It allows nodes to use the best channel available in their neighborhood based on a channel selection algorithm. It also extends the OLSR protocol with a new routing metric to take into account both channel diversity and channel alternation [Simulation tests of the enhanced OLSR protocol show that it significantly improves the throughput and outperforms existing solutions such as WCETT II) Carine TOHAM, François JAN France Telecom Research & Development 2 Avenue Pierre Marzin Lannion France 22307 Institute National Polytechnique de Department of Information Science & Engg, BVBCET Page 1
  • 2. B10 Project Synopsis Grenoble, France “Multi-interfaces and Multi-channels Multi-hop Ad hoc Networks: Overview and Challenges” Description: Mobile ad hoc networks have typically used the IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol with a single interface and a unique channel to transfer data. The trend to use multiple interfaces and multiple channels was only in mesh networks or in cellular networks. This paper is a state of art on multi-hop ad hoc networks where one uses more than one interface and more than one channel. We analyzed recent advances concerning MAC protocols and adapted routing protocols. This description of related work is followed by a discussion on open research issues related to this theme. We focus on throughput oriented approaches. Description: To accommodate real-time multimedia application while satisfying application-level QoS requirements in a wireless ad-hoc network, we need QoS control mechanisms. We proposed a new routing mechanism for a wireless ad-hoc network composed of nodes equipped with multiple network interfaces. By embedding information about channel usage in control messages of OLSRv2, each node obtains a view of topology and bandwidth information of the whole network. Based on the obtained information, a source node determines a logical path with the maximum available bandwidth to satisfy application-level QoS requirements. In this paper, we evaluated feasibility of the proposal through simulation and practical experiments and confirmed that our proposal effectively transferred multimedia packets over a logical path avoiding congested links. 5) Project Description: Department of Information Science & Engg, BVBCET Page 2
  • 3. B10 Project Synopsis Wireless mesh networks (WMN): It is a self organized and self configured network without centralized control, with the feature of multi-hop and limited energy. WMN consist of 3 types. Infrastructure: Clients gain access to each other through routers and are not actively involved in routing and forwarding of packets. Client: Clients can communicate with each other directly without involving routers. Hybrid: It is the combination of ‘Infrastructure’ and ‘Client’ type. Routing is a critical task in WMN as the nodes are moving. Routing protocols are divided into 2 categories; Reactive protocols: Routes are established only when required by flooding of route request packet (RRP). Proactive routing protocols: Routes are established before the actual usage. OLSR (Optimized Link State Routing) : OLSR is proactive protocol. It uses 2 messages first, the HELLO messages & the second called as TC(topology control). The HELLO messages are periodically sent so that each node can discover its neighbors. They advertise the links between a MPR (Multi-Point Relay) node and each of its neighbors that has selected it as an MPR.Only MPR nodes are allowed to periodically broadcast or relay TC messages so that all nodes can have a global topological view of the network. MPRs are periodically selected by each node and their identities are notified through hello messages. Thus, hello messages advertise MPR node identities and build up one-hop routing table for each node. Then, TC messages allow nodes to complete computing of their routes towards any destination in the network by advertising vicinity links of MPRs. The enhancement of existing OLSR protocol, to provide the features of MIMC, the following are considered. 1) Channel quality evaluation. Department of Information Science & Engg, BVBCET Page 3
  • 4. B10 Project Synopsis Evaluated by neighbor-hood channel discovery, channel state notification (by considering a particular node's load, its availability & packet error rate). 2) Channel selection There are a set of channels for each node to be shared. The HELLO messages contain set of channels shared & those which are not currently in use. Corresponding evaluating metric (such as cost, delay etc) for the channels, are also known. So a channel is selected which has least cost.) 3) Enhanced Routing metric to be considered are channel alternation, channel quality, Hop number. 6) Software specifications: i) NS-2 simulator ii) C++ iii) Plug in to support multiple-interface in NS-2. 7) Feasibility study: i. Implementation can be done in c++ and NS-2, which we are already familiar with, so the project is technically feasible. ii. Plug in required to support multiple -interface multi-channel is already available. 8) Team information: Batch Roll no USN Name Signature Department of Information Science & Engg, BVBCET Page 4
