PURPOSE OF USING MAPS IN STUDY OF HISTORY?
1. Trade Routes:
In addition to political maps and physical maps, there are different types of special purpose of
maps. These range from road maps to weather maps to election maps. Some special purpose of
maps use arrows to show the movement of people and goods from palace to palace. The map
below shows some of the trade routes merchants used in Asia about the year 100.

Other special-purpose of maps show cultural, or human characteristics of a region. One map
might show the different languages spoken in Europe or in North America. Another might
show where the wealthiest people and poorest people in a city live.
The map below shows the major religions in South Asia and East Asia today. You will learn
about some of these regions in your study of Indian Civilization.
