Hallo, Hi,
Bonjour, Hola,
Grüezi, Servus
Designtrend Insekten – Ein absurder Trend?
aktuellen VM MAGs Spring/Summer 2019.
The Insect Trend in Design – Absurd?
Insects don’t always have the best reputations. Mostly, they’re
even associated with disgust and are thus never even considered
when it comes to aesthetics or design.
Alongside butterflies and bees, beetles are beginning to crop up
more and more as design objects. And we’re not talking about
sweet little ladybirds here, but rather about big, dark brown cock-
roaches and the like. For example, contrasting the seemingly ugly
with luxury and aesthetics in the form of a designer gown is one
statement which has proved particularly popular.
The environment in which insects are active, i.e. nature, also
plays a significant role in the staging of shop windows, in adver-
tising campaigns, and in collections. Large leaves, extravagant
flowers and wild plants and bushes are all used as templates.
We allowed ourselves to be inspired by this trend and by many
more when it came to creating our VM MAG, and thus hope you
enjoy reading and browsing the latest VM MAG for spring/summer
2019.

A VM MAG interview with Simon Zillober, Head
of Product & Key Account Manager Europe at
B-Mannequins, on the launch of the new man-
nequin production at Barthelmess GmbH.
VM MAG: Mr Zillober, you have worked at various major
mannequin manufacturers for many years. What prompted you to
move to B-Mannequins?
Simon Zillober: Being able to strike out in new directions in
terms of mannequin and product development and shift the focus
to customer requirements even more together with the whole
team at Barthelmess GmbH.

17. INTERVIEW
Simon Zillober: B-Mannequins designt Mannequins zielge-
Schaufensterfigurenmarkt erkennbar, d.h. welcher Figurentyp
stark abstrakten bzw. semiabstrakten Kopfvarianten.
Mittelpunkt.
VM MAG: Barthelmess, the visual marketing specialist, is now
also adding mannequins to its portfolio with “B-Mannequins”.
With which innovations do you want to win shares on this highly
competitive market?
Simon Zillober: Behind the scenes we are working at high
pressure on precisely that, so far only internally, but I can already
reveal: our customers will have the chance to get their VM projects
from one source from October onwards. This means having just
one partner, one visual implementation when implementing their
VM concepts.
VM MAG: What are the new B-Mannequins going to look like,
what can we expect?
Simon Zillober: B-Mannequins designs mannequins specifi-
cally to the customer’s brand specifications and individual custo-
mising requirements.
VM MAG: Which general trends can be seen on the mannequin
market at the moment, i.e. which types of mannequins are
preferred?
Simon Zillober: The sometimes more and sometimes less pro-
nounced abstract and semi-abstract head versions are predomi-
nant. A reduction to the essentials can also be seen, no more over-
loaded motifs and surfaces, but an associated clear statement on
simple and natural colours and fabrics.
VM MAG: To what extent do fashion and social trends affect de-
velopments in the mannequin industry?
Simon Zillober: Besides the fashion trends, social changes
and adaptations to the current mood of the times have an effect:
attention is focused on sustainability and recyclability as well as
responsibility towards the human being and the environment.

VM MAG: Wie können, technisch
gesehen, Schaufensterfiguren noch ver-
bessert werden, um sie noch alltagstaug-
licher zu machen (leichterer Auf- und
Abbau, leichter zu handhaben beim An-
und Ausziehen, stabiler und unempfind-
licher in Sachen Oberfläche)?
Simon Zillober: Herr Lippl, Sie
gesprochen. Denn am POS müssen die
VM-Teams mit immer weniger Personal
auskommen. Deshalb ist genau dies
unser Fokus. An dieser Stelle darf ich Sie
gerne in den neuen Showroom einladen,
um Ihnen unsere Antwort auf Ihre oben
aufgeführten Anliegen zu erörtern.
VM MAG: In welchen Abständen wird
Barthelmess neue Figurenserien auf den
Markt bringen?
Simon Zillober: Wichtiger als der
Zeitabstand ist für uns hier ganz klar
das individuelle Customizing - getreu
unserem Motto: „[B] - Mannequins - wir
entwickeln mit Dir den Unterschied…“
VM MAG: Herr Zillober, vielen Dank
für das Gespräch.
VM MAG: Which general trends can
be seen on the mannequin market at the

are preferred?
Simon Zillober: The sometimes

sentials can also be seen, no more over-
loaded motifs and surfaces, but an as-
sociated clear statement on simple and

VM MAG: At what intervals is Bart-
helmess going to launch new mannequin
ranges on the market?
Simon Zillober: What is more
important to us than the time frame is
very clearly the personal customising—in
line with our motto: “[B]-Mannequins: we
develop the difference with you…“
VM MAG: Mr Zillober, thank you very
much for the interview.
Interview: Helmut Lippl
Im Fokus des neuen Mannequin-Kompe-
tenz-Team steht der Kunde und damit die
Umsetzung individueller Kundenwün-
sche.
The focus of the new Mannequin com-
petence team is on the customer and
thus the implementation of individual
customer requirements.
We would also be happy to bring you
closer to our brand philosophy in a

When German Minister of Defence Ursula von der
Leyen announced “This is most certainly the road to
the future,” during a visit to the Logistics Headquarters
of the Federal Armed Forces in Erfurt at the end of July,
she was referring to the use of 3D printing processes to
produce urgently-needed replacement parts. A lack of
materials is something which has concerned Germany’s
Federal Armed Forces for some time now. Thus, the po-
litician from the CDU party, responsible for the area of
defence since 2013, is placing a great deal of hope in the
new technology of additive manufacturing and is calling
for the money it requires to be provided at all costs. For
example, it is currently already possible to manufacture
individual replacement parts for troop vehicles with help
from 3D printers, directly in the operational area, as well
as to install them there, explained the Minister.

möglichkeiten additiver Fertigung in unterschiedlichs-
Von der Leyen’s current foray, and the plea for the use
of modern 3D printing processes associated with it in
order to deal with equipment problems and technical
supply bottlenecks within her area of responsibility, is
just another example which illustrates the multitude
of applications additive manufacturing has across the
most varied of sectors and branches of industry. From
individual orthopaedic prosthetics and dentures to
toys, works of art or packaging, all the way to replace-
ment parts for the aviation and automotive industries,
basically anything can be created with the help of 3D
printing. “3D printing, or additive manufacturing, has
the advantage of almost complete freedom of design.
This is resulting in completely new approaches to con-
struction. For example, multiple components can be
combined into one,” confirms Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Roman
Weber, Managing Director of the company thinkTEC
3D, and names two additional important advantages
of 3D printing compared to traditional methods of pro-
duction: “On the one hand, production with additive
manufacturing can be economical even from a batch
size of 1, while this is only first the case in traditional
processes after a certain minimum amount has been
achieved. On the other hand, you also have very short
times to market as, for example, you do not need to
produce any tools or moulds in advance.”

Ganz ähnlich äußert sich Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Jana
Jancke, Anwendungsberaterin beim Unternehmen
alphacam – Solutions for a 3D World, über die un-
3D-Druckverfahren nahezu beliebige komplexe
Geometrien oder Strukturen abbildbar. Aufgrund
des additiven Aufbaus und des auswaschbaren
Stützmaterials können Baugruppen in einem Stück
gefertigt werden. Hohlräume senken den Material-
verbrauch. Größtmögliche Stabilität bei minimalem
Gewicht kann über eine Wabenstruktur im Inneren
des Bauteils realisiert werden.“
Laut Roman Weber halten 3D-Druck-Verfahren
bereits jetzt Einzug in unterschiedlichste Indus-
lenwert erlangen, bekannte Produktionsverfahren
aber auch in Zukunft nicht komplett ablösen. Auch
Jana Jancke von alphacam bezeichnet 3D-Druck in
diesem Zusammenhang als „wichtige Ergänzung“
der herkömmlichen Herstellungsprozesse.
Einfache Fertigung komplexer Geometrien, nahezu
grenzenloses Design, Kombination verschiedener
Werkstoffe und/oder Farben in einem Druckvor-
gang, individuelle Anpassung, Leichtbau-Struktu-
ren, Verkürzung von Entwicklungszeit, geringer
Materialverbrauch, etc. sorgen jedoch zweifelsfrei
dafür, dass man in den unterschiedlichsten Fachge-
bieten mittlerweile auf das Herstellungsverfahren
3D-Druck aufmerksam geworden ist.
Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Jana Jancke, application consul-
tant for the company alphacam – Solutions for a 3D
World, has similar comments when it comes to the
various advantages of the new production techno-
logy: “Thanks to additive manufacturing, we can
create components which were previously conside-
red to be far too complex to be manufactured, both
economically and in general. 3D printing is bound
to almost no restriction when it comes to design,
which is why, for example, almost arbitrarily
complex geometries or structures can be depicted
explicitly through FDM 3D printing processes. As-
semblies can be manufactured in one piece due to
the additive structure and the washable support
material. Hollow spaces reduce material consump-
tion. The greatest possible stability with minimal
weight can be realised through a honeycomb
structure inside the component.”
According to Roman Weber, 3D printing processes
have already entered into the most varying branches
of industry and, in doing so, are currently evolving
beyond prototype production to series production:
“Our printers are becoming better and more precise
all the time. Sooner or later, larger and larger pro-
duction volumes are also going to become economi-
cal. Series production is already completely possible
with the current generation of machines, such as
the HP Multijet Fusion. Currently, we are producing
batch sizes which range from 1 to several thousands,
depending on the area of application and the needs
of our customers.” However, Weber continues,
although additive manufacturing is attaining
greater and greater importance, it will not comple-
tely replace familiar production processes in the
future. In this context, Jana Jancke from alphacam
also describes 3D printing as “an important supple-
ment” to traditional manufacturing processes.
However, the simple manufacturing of complex geo-
metries, almost unlimited design possibilities, the
combination of various materials and/or colours
in one printing process, individual customisation,
lightweight structures, the reduction of develop-
ment time, lower material consumption, etc. ensure
beyond doubt that people are beginning to take note
of 3D printing as a manufacturing process across
the most varying of subject areas.

„alphacam-Kunden kommen wirklich aus sämtli-
chen Branchen, darunter Konsum, Investitionsgüter,
Design, Forschung oder Bildung. Wir bedienen Endver-
braucher ebenso wie Einmannbetriebe oder Konzerne
mit 3D-Druckern oder direkt mit gedruckten Bauteilen
aus der TEILEFABRIK von alphacam. “, versichert Jana
Jancke. Ganz ähnlich verhält es sich bei thinkTEC 3D:
„Unsere Kunden kommen aktuell aus den Bereichen
Medizin, Orthopädietechnik, Maschinenbau und Elek-
troindustrie, Innenausstattung, Architektur, Automo-
bilbranche und Fahrzeugbau“, verrät Roman Weber.
„Gerade in Bereichen wie der Orthopädietechnik ist
es durch den 3D-Druck möglich geworden, passgenau
Orthesen zu fertigen, ohne den hohen handwerklichen
Aufwand, der hier früher nötig war. Dies spart sowohl
Solche
Sonderanfertigungen, speziell in kleinen Stückzahlen,
besonderen Halterungen. Wie bereits erwähnt sind
Sonderanfertigungen durch den 3D-Druck auch bei
kleiner Stückzahl möglich, was wohl auch im Bereich
des Ladenbaus ein ausschlaggebender Punkt sein
dürfte.“
“alphacam customers truly come from across all indus-
tries, including consumption, capital goods, design,
research or education. We serve end customers, as
well as one-man operations or corporate groups, with
3D printers or directly with printed components from
alphacam’s TEILEFABRIK [parts factory].” assures
Jana Jancke. It’s a very similar story over at thinkTEC
3D: “Our customers currently come from the fields of
medicine, orthopaedic technology, engineering and the
electrical industry, interior design, architecture, the
automotive industry and vehicle construction,” reveals
Roman Weber. “It is precisely in areas such as orthopae-
dic technology that 3D printing has made it possible to
manufacture custom-fit orthoses without the high level
of manual effort which used to be required for this.
This saves both costs and time, all the while guarante-
eing a result for the patient which fits exactly. On the
other hand, individual highlights such as door handles
in the form of a hotel symbol or special table legs can
be produced in the field of interior design. Custom-ma-
de products such as these were often not commercially
viable through classic production processes, especially
in small batch sizes.”
Even though thinkTEC 3D does not currently have
any customers from the field of shop fitting or visual
merchandising, Managing Director Roman Weber can
clearly see a whole range of options in this area: “There
are most definitely a great deal of opportunities for
using 3D printing in shop fitting or in window dressing,
as additive manufacturing essentially sets no limits
on people’s creativity. Here, I’m thinking of tailor-ma-
de mannequins, special clothes hangers, a shelf or
drawers with individual handles or special fixtures. As
already mentioned, 3D printing also enables the ma-
nufacturing of custom-made products in small batch
sizes, which may also be a crucial factor in the field of
shop fitting.”

43. INTERVIEW
rung.
VM MAG: An welchem Projekt arbeiten Sie gerade?
Evelyn Lagoyannis: An der Frühjahr/Sommer-Window-Insze-
nierung.
VM MAG: The comma shop windows and in-store campaigns
impress consumers. What does the development process for your
campaigns look like?
Evelyn Lagoyannis: I prefer to get inspiration for the VM concepts
on the road. For me, architecture and art plays a large role. I filter
trends from trade fairs such as Salone di Mobile in Milan or Maison &
Objet in Paris. These impressions give me multiple ideas and concep-
tual approaches which are brought together on mood boards in order
to make them tangible. Renderings and material sourcing then follow.
Finally, the prototype and live effect of the new window decide the
final design.
VM MAG: What project are you currently working on?
Evelyn Lagoyannis: The spring/summer window production.
VM MAG: What makes the shopping experience at comma different
Evelyn Lagoyannis: The important thing is to offer the customer
a special shopping experience in store. We spend every day working
on how to create an ambience which combines the experience and

Personal service is also an absolute must, the focus here is always on
personal advice for the customer. Events are also a tool which we use
to stand out from the crowd.
VM MAG: What trends have the biggest influence on shop window
and in-store installations today, and what is the best way to translate
fashion trends into the shop window and into the space?
Evelyn Lagoyannis: You discover trends on the street, or increa-
singly online. The art is in recognising which trend is right for which
brand. There’s no rule for fashion trends - these are best translated into
the window with an optically surprising twist.
VM MAG: How important will the topic of “digitalisation of the
retail space” be in the future?
Evelyn Lagoyannis: T “Digitalisation” is a hot topic at comma –
as it is for most competitors. It is inevitable that we will move with
the times and introduce new things. I see multiple key aspects here:
fashion and brand, but also efficiency and flexibility. For me, trends,
outfits, and moods should be translated into an image theme which

Evelyn Lagoyannis: Gestern Abend. Schuhe.
line-Handel dauerhaft durchsetzen. Was glauben Sie?
Evelyn Lagoyannis: Durch innovative, zukunftsweisen-
time“.
should be reflected digitally and also emotionally in the store.
VM MAG: What technology do you already use at PoS?
Evelyn Lagoyannis: At comma, we use screens for our
campaign videos and iPads for more in-depth advice.
There will be new, surprising approaches here in the future.
Here, it’s about precisely analysing which digital concepts actually
suit comma customers and will ultimately be used. In addition, we
very successfully link our bricks and mortar retail with the comma
online shop.
VM MAG: When did you last buy something online?
Evelyn Lagoyannis: Yesterday evening. Shoes.
VM MAG: Can bricks and mortar retail prevail over online
retailing in the long term? What do you think?
Evelyn Lagoyannis: In my view, bricks and mortar retail will
continue to endure thanks to innovative, forward-thinking creative
concepts. For me, fashion is passion which cannot be fully repre-
sented online. I am convinced that customers want to feel and expe-
rience fashion. Being inspired by a shop window, getting new inspi-
rations in store when it comes to outfits, feeling the quality, seeing
colours and cuts better, this all provides significant added value.
When you also feel at home in the ambience, get professional
advice, and are offered a coffee, shopping becomes wonderful “me
time”.

45. INTERVIEW
barthelmess.com
Interview: Helmut Lippl
nativprodukte.
Barthelmess zusammen. Was ist das Besondere an dieser Zusam-
menarbeit?
VM MAG: In your eyes, what will the store of the future look like?
Evelyn Lagoyannis: For me, there is no doubt that bricks and
mortar retail will continue to be important to consumers. This also
includes the shop windows which win over our customers. I believe
that PoS will become a setting for lingering, communicating, trying
things out, and discovery. Often, the focus is not on the actual desire
to purchase an item of clothing, impulse buys occur much more
often - also thanks to alternative products. PoS will become enter-
tainment and should surprise people. Pop-ups in unusual locations
in connection with exciting events can cast a different light on col-
lections and brands.
VM MAG: You have been working together with the VM experts
Barthelmess for a long time. What is so special about this collabo-
ration?
Evelyn Lagoyannis: I have been working with Barthelmess
for more than ten years and I value the frank, close collaboration
and the congenial camaraderie. Since you have to be “situational-
ly flexible” in VM and retail on a day-to-day basis, the proactive and
solution-oriented collaboration has often cast one shop window or
another in a new light.
VM MAG: Ms Lagoyannis, thank you very much for the
interview.

freiem Himmel gezeigt. Außerdem gibt es in der Sommersaison jeden
Sonntag ein Live-Klavierkonzert am Chopin-Denkmal.
ACT III - MUST If you are already in the City Centre, you absolutely
must go to the most characteristic building in Warsaw and the highest
in Poland, i.e. the Palace of Culture (4). You should definitely ascend
in a historic lift to the observation deck on the 30th floor where at the
height of 114 metres you can admire the view of the entire panorama
of Warsaw. Encouraged by the bird‘s eye view of our beautiful Warsaw,
let‘s take a closer look at the magnificent ‚Royal Baths‘. On our way there,
we should definitely stop by „Słodki-Słony“ at 45 Mokotowska St. for the
famous Polish „bun“ with cottage cheese, raspberries or blueberries
from Magda Gessler - the well-known Polish restaurateur who has been
promoting Polish cuisine at its best for years (5). We are in „Łazienki
Królewskie Park“ (The Royal Baths) founded by Poland‘s King Stanisław
August Poniatowski in the 17th century (6). The Amphitheatre on the Isle
is teeming with life as frequent theatre plays or outdoor cinema films take
place there. In addition, live piano concerts are held every Sunday in the
summer season at the Chopin Monument
ACT II - FREUDE
Man findet dort groß-
ACT II - PLEASURE
It is a great pleasure to meet up with friends in the City Centre to savour
the best breakfast in town. If you like to celebrate moments in a modern
yet warm interior, you need look no further than my favourite „Weranda“
Bistro in Hala Koszyki (3). Today, it is a place of exceptional social and
culinary encounters. Under the roof of one hall, there are several res-
taurants and bars, and the industrial spaces of the hall are the perfect
backdrop for constantly changing artists. You can discover there lar-
ge-format photographs, images that may transfer you to a different reality
or sculptures and installations that may bewitch you with their hidden

ACT IV - GENUSS
che kleine Einkaufszentrum „MYSIA 3“ am „Plac Trzech Krzyży“ (Platz der drei Kreuze);
in deren postindustriellen ehemaligen Werkshallen heute neue Kunst entsteht.
ACT IV - INDULGENCE
Now it is shopping time! The most suitable place for us is the area of Plac Trzech
Krzyży (Three Crosses Square), i.e. the intimate „MYSIA 3“ where original stores with
clothing, jewellery and home furnishings are located right in the City Centre in one
tenement house (7). There is also a space in a contemporary style designed for photo
gallery and interesting fashion or artistic events. For the more demanding, there is a
luxury department store „VITKAC“ at 9 Bracka St., where you can find, among others,
the following brands: Louis Vuitton, Bottega Veneta, Gucci, Lanvin and Saint Laurent.
After such intense emotions, it is time to relax and have a delicious lunch in „NA LATO“
(FOR SUMMER) - a hipster restaurant in the heart of Warsaw‘s Powiśle District, where
seasonal dishes are served during the day, nightlife is celebrated with stronger cocktails
in the evening and at night you dance like there is no tomorrow.
AKT V - BEAUTY
Now when our tummies are full, on the other side of the Vistula River in the artistic
corner of Praga District, we visit the Soho Factory with the atmosphere of the post-in-
dustrial assembly halls currently used to create new artistic quality. The Neon Museum
is in the middle of the entire complex and its goal is to collect the post-war neon signs
used as wall ads. We can be amazed at the collection of over 100 neon signs, designed by
Polish graphic designers and artists who are also the creators of the well-known Polish
School of Poster (8).

Adressen in Warschau.
ACT VI - HAPPINESS
A walk around the Old Town inscribed on the UNIESCO World Heritage List in the
afternoon on a warm day brings solace to my soul. Dinner with your loved ones? Only
at the „Różana“ Restaurant at 7 Chocimska Street as it is the quintessence of the Polish
taste(9). Great decor, top quality service and the possibility of dining in a cosy, atmosphe-
ric garden by the candlelight and water fountains rank this restaurant in the forefront of
the tastiest places in Warsaw.
ACT VII - INSANITY
It is time to completely relax and dance until the morning in the heart of Warsaw. We
decide to dance a bit and we go to „The View“ which represents the European level
of clubbing on 1000m2
. In the Spectrum Tower, one of the tallest and most modern
buildings in Poland on the 32nd floor - a clubbing atmosphere with good music at its best
can be sensed with ease (10 + 11).
ACT VIII - HARMONY
After an intense day, I miss my home. They say: „There‘s no place like home. The day is
over and it is time to draw the curtain waiting for the next spectacle where the life will
write its own script. As in every Theatre, the ending to the show is a great surprise but

TORY BURCH IM BLUMENMEER
New York Fashion Week Februar 2018 - Ein Meer
TORY BURCH IN THE FLOWER SEA
New York Fashion Week February 2018 - A sea of
pink flowers lined Tory Burch‘s Runway for Autumn
/ Winter 2018/19, and the floral motif also dominated
the collection shown on it. A flower pattern inspired
by the drawings of historical science books was
a common theme throughout the designs. This
all-over print was complemented by delicate white
blouse dresses in maxi and knee length as well as
parts made of lace, corduroy and jeans

The carpet design by Tara Bernerd needs space to develop its
dramatic effect, and discreet furniture that lingers in the backg-
round. „Papillon“ is hand-knotted, made of Tibetan wool and silk.

BOTANICALGARDEN
was man in seine Tasche packt – denn transparen-
Next year you should think carefully about what you
put in your bag - because transparent models are in
vogue. They provide insights that otherwise do not
exist, and give every simple look an extravagant
upgrade.
Diese Serie der botanischen Fotografie wird auf
transparentem Film hergestellt. Dadurch erhalten
die Blumen ein einzigartiges Gefühl der Leich-
tigkeit.
This series of botanical photography is made on
transparent film. This gives the flowers a unique
feeling of lightness. The images of dried pressed
flowers play with the element of decay and freeze
them down.

Christopher Marley - Insektenmosaik
Wir lieben diese symmetrisch angelegten Insek-
tenkunstwerke von Christopher Marley. Lebendige

chen. Schnörkellose Stühle und Interi-
eure mit schlichten Formen und zurück-
haltenden Farben wurden im großen Stil
präsentiert. EDEL UND CLASSY: Wenn es die
einen schlicht und unaufgeregt wollen,
mögen es die anderen etwas extravagan-
ter. Dunkle Hölzer, elegante Materialien wie
Leder, Samt und glänzendes Metall sind die
perfekten Zutaten zum glamourösen Look.
SCHWERER MARMOR: Ein anderes Naturmate-
zeigen Marmortische – vom kleinen Couch-
tisch bis hin zum riesigen Esstisch.
MODEST AND COMPOSED: The trend of clear and
simple shapes can be seen in the work of
many designers and manufacturers. Simple
chairs and interiors with modest shapes
and muted colours were presented on a
large scale. FINE AND CLASSY: If some people
want modest and composed, others want
it a little more extravagant. Dark woods,
elegant materials such as leather, velvet
and shiny metals are the perfect ingredi-
ents for the glamorous look. HEAVY MARBLE:
Another natural material is marble, which
is also very on trend at the moment. Many
designers and manufacturers present
marble tables – from small coffee tables
right up to massive dining tables.
Even unusual patterns and strong colors are very popular this year.
