The document discusses Egypt's agribusiness entrepreneurship digital platform called AgriRowad. It aims to promote agribusiness entrepreneurship among youth by providing tools and training through the digital platform. The platform will map value chains, identify opportunities, and connect entrepreneurs to financing and partnerships. It will also support developing business models and launching a joint agribusiness incubator with Cairo University to strengthen the entrepreneurship ecosystem in Egypt.
2. Agribusiness entrepreneurship: a lifeline
• The sector is a lifeline— 65% of poor working adults relied on agriculture for
their livelihoods in 2016.
• Overall, food and agribusiness is a US$ 5 trillion industry that represents 10
percent of global consumer spending, 40 percent of employment, and 30
percent of greenhouse-gas emissions.
• In Egypt, 25% of Egypt’s GDP, more than 50% of Egyptians livelihood, and of the
economy when aggregating formal and informal sector ; 86% of the country
water resources.
3. Agribusiness entrepreneurship: a challenge
• The World Bank statistics feature agribusiness SMEs as the largest workforce
in both developed and developing countries.
• Population growth, changing appetites and rising food demand are fueling
growth in the food and agriculture sector.
• If current trends continue, by 2050, caloric demand will increase by 70 percent,
and crop demand for human consumption and animal feed will increase by at
least 100 percent, in spite of productivity gains thus highlighting food security
as a critical issue.
• However, according to CBE statistics, agriculture represents only 5% of the
SMEs incentives program providing 5% interest and start-ups are not yet
acknowledged by the banking sector.
