1. SOROKIN :- “There is no society which is
closed (caste system of
India) and which is
completely open (class system).
No two societies are exactly same in the
amount of movement allowed or
discouraged. The speed of
movement is different from one
period of time to
another. The speed depends on the
modernization of the society”.
2. BARBER :- “Social mobility refers to movement
either upward or
downward between higher or
lower social classes”.

1. Horizontal Mobility

This is
when a
person
changes
his
occupatio
n but
overall
social
status
remains
the same.

Here with the change in occupation the change in social
status ocurs.

ď‚— Mobility is found in a temporal sense i.e in a
period of time.
 It cann’t be thought in the absence of time.
ď‚— All the previously mentioned types are
comprehensive and don’t include any other
mobility types.
