Creating Learning Nuggets on the Fly - Online Educa 2015
1. "Creating Learning Nuggets on the Fly"
OEB 2015 | Knut Linke
Hochschule Weserbergland
Wir bilden Zukunft.
2. Our session
• Introduction Learning Nuggets Open IT
• Learning Nuggets Basics
• Technology I: Microphone & WebCams
• Creating a small learning nugget
• Technology II: Studio and Production setup
• Learning Nuggets Production Details
• Technology III: Choosing the right Application
• Questions
4. Open IT Research Project
• Research project between the University of Applied
Sciences Weserbergland (HSW) and the Technical
University Darmstadt (2015-2018)
• Research focus is on the crediting of vocational
training for academic studies in the sector of IT
• Research result should be special part-time academic
offers (Bachelor/Master) for IT practitioner with a
background from the field of IHK training
(Fachinformatiker, IT Specialist , Operative
Professional)
• Study participants needs to be trained in advanced in
academic basics
5. E-Learning for Open IT
• For the new target group bridging courses are
required within the subjects of Mathematics,
Business/IT-Administration and Project Management
• The bridging focuses on beginner courses and should
be used in addition to match students and
requirements
• Student project (2015/2016) to review the existing
technology for the production of video content
• Reproduction of existing Learning Nuggets
7. What is a Learning Nugget
• A Learning Nugget is a small learning unit
– Focus on a small aspect of a topic
– Also known as a micro learning content
– Explains an aspect in detail
– Maybe received as part of subscription learning
– Duration period should be between 3-7 minutes
• Learning Nuggets can be independent or
related to other Learning Nuggets (a course)
8. How we use Learning Nuggets
• The HSW uses a duration time of 7-15
minutes for their videos
– replacement of fixed topics with Learning Nuggets
(Flipped Classroom approach/Virtual flipped
classroom approach)
• Focus is not only on the transfer of
knowledge; we are focussing on a
confirmation approach of existing knowlegde
• Supported by E-Examinations
10. T1: Microphone & Webcam
Assumptions/Learnings:
• Sound quality is important for the duration rate
– Students are listening to the video (and not mainly
watching them)
• A view on the lecturer increase the duration rate of
a Learning Nugget
– Interaction – I can see what is happening
– „Face2Face“ – I can see how is speaking
– This does not mean that the speaker has always to be in
the video
11. T1: Microphone & Webcam
Recommended Hardware:
• Standard WebCam or external WebCam
– i. E. from Logitech/Microsoft (PnP-Experts)
– 1080p Solution/25 Fps is recommended
– Maybe use an additional tripod to increase the distance
• Internal Microphone is not recommended
– Headset or additional table Microphone (remember the
ambient noise and the directivity you need)
13. Creating a Learning Nugget
• What do I want/need to transfer?
• What CI/CD do I have to follow/use (Template)?
• Do any legal restrictions apply?
– Which images do I use?
– Do I use internal information?
• How can the content be presented?
– Don’t be to offensive or improper
– Rethink your personal behavior
– But(!) remember your target group
• How many time do I have (Storytelling)?
15. What is a Learning Nugget?
• A Learning Nugget is a small learning unit
– Focus on a small aspect of a topic
– Also known as a micro learning content
– Explains an aspect in detail
– Maybe received as part of subscription learning
– Duration period should be between 3-7 minutes
• Learning Nuggets can be independent or
related to other Learning Nuggets (a course)
16. Learning Nuggets can be used for:
• For Teachers and Lectures
– Replacement of PowerPointPresentations (Flipped
Classroom/Inverted Classroom)
– Repeating of basic or providing of additional
information
• For Employee Content Development
– Temporary Replacement/Internal Training
– Knowledge Sharing
21. T2: Studio and Production Setup
• Let‘s setup an small studio...
This might include:
A GreenScreen
A dedicated Audio Connection
Camera (HDMI)
Additional Lightning (don‘t forget the
clothespin)
24. What is a Learning Nugget?
• A Learning Nugget is a small learning unit
– Focus on a small aspect of a topic
– Also known as a micro learning content
– Explains an aspect in detail
– Maybe received as part of subscription learning
– Duration period should be between 3-7 minutes
• Learning Nuggets can be independent or
related to other Learning Nuggets (a course)
25. Learning Nuggets can be used for:
• For Teachers and Lectures
– Replacement of PowerPointPresentations (Flipped
Classroom/Inverted Classroom)
– Repeating of basic or providing of additional
information
• For Employee Content Development
– Temporary Replacement/Internal Training
– Knowledge Sharing
28. Storytelling & Production
• Use a story or use case which helps you
recipients to identify them with your videos
(like an additional practical work)
• Keep it short and keep it simple
• Know the time you need and the time you can
use (a long video increase the dropout rate)
• Work rapid/standardized if possible
• Reproduce instead of „work around“
30. Transitions & Design
• Use the right transitions for your Learning
Nugget (Black or White Screen)
• Work TV and target group oriented
• Setup a standard template together with the
marketing department and stakeholders /
producers to fulfil the Corporate Identity
• Select the right color intension if possible or
needed
32. T3: The correct application
During our research project we reevaluated the
used application for the production of Learning
Nuggets. We tested:
• Solutions by Magix (Video Deluxe)
• Solutions by TechSmith (Studio)
• Solutions by Adobe (Premiere, After Effects)
33. Offers by Magix
Positive:
- Low Price
- Easy of use
Negative:
- Standard Keying (Basic version)
- Transitions might be hard to set
- Limited functionality
34. TechSmith Camtasia Studio
Positive:
- Comparable Low Price
- Easy of use
- Focus on Rapid Video Production
Negative:
- Issues with media formats
- Possible issues with long videos/movies
- Working with text is a fussy job
35. Adobe Premiere
Positive:
- Works perfectly with everykind of media
- Excellent for on-demand cutting
- Integration within the Adobe world
Negative:
- Price
- Usability/Operation
- Keying is not the same quality as After Effects
36. Adobe After Effects

- Works perfectly with everykind of media
- Excellent support via additional plugins
- Integration within Adobe/Photoshop
Negative:
- Price
- Usability/Operation
- Hardware Requirements
37. • You might wanna look on the following
applications for animations:
– PowerPoint
– Prezi
– VideoScripe
