2. Introduction
ď‚— In recent past investment patterns for promoting renewable
energy has improved dramatically and the trend is projecting
the accessibility of electricity for all.
ď‚— Wind and solar PV are being deployed to contribute in
meeting ever rising energy demand.
ď‚— The cost competitiveness of solar and wind is posing
challenge in enhancing capacity of coal based power plants
and creating an alternative for India to adopt electrification
based on solar plus wind.
 This could reduce coal’s predominance as a provider of
baseload generation
3. AssessmentAssessment
Main hurdles in the path of complete solar-wind based
electrification are:
• Achieving the target of energy consumption growth at 4.9%
per year and “Make in India” campaign.
• High capital cost of renewable energy installations.
• Huge reliability on imported solar panels and wind
turbines.
• Variability in wind and solar power output due to fluctuating
weather patterns.
• Inefficiencies in transmission networks.
• Shortage of open land.
• Low capacity factor of solar and wind power plants.
4. Possible solutionsPossible solutions
ď‚— Reforms in coal pricing-setting prices equivalent to import
prices
ď‚— Implementation of carbon tax
ď‚— Enhancing competitiveness of renewable-targeting cost
efficiency in investment.
ď‚— Government intervention- direct grants and investment,
loan guarantees, interest subsidy, incentives for preparing
detailed project reports.
ď‚— Private sector participation
5. ConclusionConclusion
ď‚— Climate change, air pollution and energy security would call
for transition of energy system i.e. shift to renewable
energy
ď‚— Loads have to be shifted gradually from non renewable
sources to renewable with aim of achieving 100%
renewable and greener energy.
ď‚— Government interventions for timely implementation of
energy policies would help in achieving the target.
