care of one or two Christmas presents. For many people, a visit to the
Christmas market is a permanent fixture on their pre-Christmas agenda.
Christmas markets are held in almost every town. One of the oldest and
most delightful in Germany is held every year on the Römer in Frankfurt.
A special feature of this market is the festively lit Christmas tree, which is
always more than 20 metres high. It would be difficult to set it up without
hydraulic equipment.
Every year, the Frankfurt Christmas Market enchants more than three million
visitors. Surrounded by the aromas of cinnamon and roasted almonds and by the
sound of the tower trumpeters, no one can fail to enter into the Christmas spirit.
The earliest documentary evidence of the existence of a Christmas market in the
city on the Main dates from 1393. At that time, only residents of the city were
permitted to offer their wares for sale here. Outsiders were not allowed. The goods
on offer in those days were handmade items, toys, sweets and Christmas gifts. Be-
fore the Second World War, two-metre high effigies of Saint Nicholas made from
gingerbread were erected in the market, and were eaten by schoolchildren and
their teachers.
TRADITION MEETS THE MODERN AGE
Today, the focus of activity is on the Römerberg. Framed by delightful half-
