DBAs - Is Your Company’s Personal and Sensitive Data Safe?

We have all seen the press coverage on corporate data breaches and compromises to personal data. You’ve probably heard about the new EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) that came into effect in May last year, which affects any company that manages the personal data of EU residents. There are also some U.S. regulations that cover data privacy, such as HIPAA, HITECH, PCI and the CA Consumer Privacy Act. Of these, GDPR is considered the most comprehensive when it comes to the needs of the individual and how their personal data should be protected and carries the harshest financial penalties for non-compliance. The DBA is often the primary responsible party for implementing compliance controls and technical measures for protecting data. But the GDPR first requires an assessment of where PII and sensitive data is across multiple databases and this will be one of the first challenges a DBA will face before applying protection measures. With many DBAs having to manually trawl through their database tables to identify sensitive data, what is needed is a fast, effective way to automate the discovery process and report on where sensitive data is stored. This would save time and enable companies to determine the most appropriate way to apply protective safeguards in order to minimize data breaches in the future and protect the business. Autonomy in targeting is a function that could be applied to any intelligent system, in particular the rapidly expanding array of robotic systems, in the air, on land and at sea – including swarms of small robots. This is an area of significant investment and emphasis for many armed forces, and the question is not so much whether we will see more intelligent robots, but whether and by what means they will remain under human control. Today’s remote-controlled weapons could become tomorrow’s autonomous weapons with just a software upgrade. The central element of any future autonomous weapon system will be the software. Military powers are investing in AI for a wide range of applications10 and significant efforts are already underway to harness developments in image, facial and behavior recognition using AI and machine learning techniques for intelligence gathering and “automatic target recognition” to identify people, objects or patterns. Although not all autonomous weapon systems incorporate AI and machine learning, this software could form the basis of future autonomous weapon systems.

Validating potential incidents or indicators of compromise (IOCs) in today’s fast paced environment can be somewhat overwhelming and difficult. Sometimes a team does not believe they have all of the tools and resources to quickly and accurately identify, verify, and rectify a potential indicator in their environment in time. Sometimes these investigations are performed yet may leave out valuable key pieces of data that would benefit the prevention or hardening against future similar attacks. Everyone wants the expensive and shiny tool that vendors offer, but sometimes budgets do not always allow teams access to the latest and greatest, and honestly, not all tools are equal. Relying on one piece of data for IOC validation is a bad idea, even if that resource is the best in the industry. The approach is to use not only the tools you have, but to augment them with existing open source tools that will enrich your investigation, provide accuracy, and supplement your ability to quickly and accurately respond to valid threats in order to increase your security team’s effectiveness. The purpose of this presentation will be to walk users through the value of Open Source Intel and how to use the tools available effectively to help research and identify potential issues during an incident response engagement.
