Montiel Overall “LIS professionals will need to fully understand cultural issues affecting minority and underserved populations, and how cultural issues affect perceptions of libraries.” “This article argues that greater understanding of cultural issues will result in increased library use.”
Article’s objectives summarize current understanding of cultural competence fill in the gap in the literature on this topic in library and information science establish a basis for moving forward the discussion of cultural competence within the LIS profession

Ideas Ideal application for EBLIP- what actually works? Lack of community engagement re: information needs Connection to Participatory Action Research

  1. Overall’s article- great idea, bit too idealistic, overreach- what does this look like in practice- applications, examples? Does it work in all contexts- how can you address changing immigrant demographics, multiple ethnicities, feasibility of cultural awareness for all- will it work in th Irish contextCan ideas from EBP or PAR be incorpoirated. Idea of working from and with the communitySpeculaton on the benefits- societlal level healing?
  2. The model represented in figure 3 illustrates three domains (cognitive, interpersonal, and environmental) in which cultural competence abilitiesdevelop. Within each domain key components contribute to increasedcultural competence. In the cognitive domain, cultural self-awareness andcultural knowledge are developed. In the interpersonal domain, culturalappreciation and an ethic of caring are developed. In the environmentaldomain, language, conditions, space, policies, rules and regulations areconsidered. The backdrop for the framework is the culture of communities, which provides a rich source of information about values, customs, dailypractices, religion, and other cultural aspects of a community.
  3. Not a random collection- structured by meaningful aspects of practice and learningTwo faces- multiple purposes, views- can accommodate that in structure
  4. Know why, know how, know what- sums up professional practice
  5. 3 different ways to think about portfolio structure
