Celebrate Deliverance
Based on, Freedom From Addiction
By: Mike Quarles & Neil T. Anderson
What Keeps You in Bondage?

Statement Two:
I consciously and deliberately choose to
submit to God by denying my self (self
effort), and picking up my cross daily and
following Jesus (Jesus’ finished work).
You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down
to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
We Are Not a Product of Our Past,
But Product of The Cross.
• It is essential to know who you are.
• We act according to who we believe we are and what we believe about our
self.
• Understanding who we are in Jesus,
• Enables us to rest in His finished work,
• And as we walk by faith in the Spirit,
• We will not carry out the desires of the flesh (Galatians 5:16-18).

You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down
to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
Addicts Are Looking For Love,

In All the Wrong Places.
• If you wish to save your life you will lose it (Matthew 16:25).
• If you look for love and worth apart from Jesus you will lose
meaning and purpose.
• Finding identity, significance, and security in Jesus = Real Life!
• Jesus is the way, the truth and the life (john 14:6).
You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down
to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
Jesus Did Not Come To:
• Show us a new way, method, steps or even principles. He is the
Way.
• Give us correct theology or new insights, He is the Truth.
• Give us a better way to live, shape us up or help us get our act
together,

HE IS THE LIFE.
You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down
to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
To Win the Spiritual Battle You,

Must Be Under God’s Authority.
• Submit to God, resist the devil and he will flee from you(James 4:7).
• You can’t do one with out the other.
• And we are in a spiritual battle.
• We win the battle by faith and have freedom, joy and peace.

• This is the victory that overcomes the world, even our
faith (1John 5:4).
You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down
to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
85% of All Christians Are Not Experiencing,

FREEDOM
• Believing they are trapped by genetic makeup, family background and environment.
• They believe they are victims of their past, so it makes no difference what they do to
get free.
• Our behavior is a direct result of what we believe about God, Our selves, The world
and the finished work of Jesus on the cross.

You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down
to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
Understanding the Problem.
We are not set free by how we behave.
• We are set free by what we believe.
• The truth sets us free and lies keep us in bondage.

• We are not victim of our past.
• We are victors through Jesus and the cross.

But thanks be to God. He gives us the victory through
our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 15:57)
You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down
to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
Why Can’t We Stop Our Self-Destructive Behavior?

Because addiction is bondage and, Bondage
doesn’t respond to.
• logic,
• commonsense,
• and clear thinking.
You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down
to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
Understanding the Problem.
• Behavior is a result of belief.
• It wont’ make any difference what we do to get free, because:
• We always act consistently with how we perceive ourselves, and
what we believe.

Our actions are always consistent with
what we perceive and believe.
You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down
to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
Who Are You?
Are You a Product Of:
• Your family background an environment?
• Your genetic makeup?
• Your Past?

NO!
You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down
to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
So, Who Are You?
• You are a product of the cross.
• You are a new creation – dead to sin.
• You’re God’s beloved Son or daughter – loved and
accepted.
• You are the righteousness of God in Jesus Christ.
• Jesus Christ is in you and your are in Jesus Christ.
• Jesus is your life, you are complete in Jesus.
You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down
to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
But The Problem is:
We are all born with basic needs to be, loved and accepted and
have worth.
• But only God can meet these needs.
• And not having a relationship with God, We meet our needs the
best way we can.
• We develop ways to cope, succeed and survive apart form God.
• This is the flesh, and we believe it is our life and where we get
our false Identity from.
You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down
to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
Everyone Has a False Identity in the Flesh.
• Most believe they are insecure, inadequate, inferior,
guilty and that there is something wrong with them.
• This belief is developed from the messages that we
receive as we grow up,
• From the world, the flesh and Satan.

Lies we believe about self keep us in bondage.
You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down
to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
Making a personal Appraisal.
• God’s plan for us, is to look to Him to meet all of our needs, but
• We have attempted to meet our needs in our own resources.
• We develop ways to cope, succed, survive and defend ourselves
independent of God.
• These flesh patterns develop into strongholds and addictive
behavior.

You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down
to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
How We Get Into Bondage.
World – Family Background, hurts, traumas, abuse…
Flesh – How we meet needs of acceptance and worth apart from God, failures,
successes, problems…
Satan – Lies about who we are, who God is and how He feels about us, and what
we need in life…
False Identity
Insecure
Inadequate
Inferior
Guilt

You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down
to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
False Identity Affects Our Outlook on,

Life, Relationships, Performance
• It sets us up for failure in all these areas.
• We struggle, strive and stumble, and we have a sense of
impending doom, so we turn to our fleshly lust – addiction.
• It seems to work for a while and that is why it develops into a
stronghold and is so difficult to find freedom from.
You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down
to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
Big Problem with a Dysfunctional Family
• Children are the best observers of what is going on, but
the worst interpreters and,
• Unable to distinguish between the truth of what parents
say and do and what is false.
• So we end up with a false Identity in the flesh and it
controls all of our life.
• The Problem is what we believe about self.
You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down
to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
How We Get Into Bondage.

You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down
to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
The Root of Addictive Behavior is a False Identity.
• Trying to change behavior doesn’t work and is futile and
frustrating.
• If you change your behavior you haven’t changed what
needs changing
• The finished work of Christ on the cross is the answer.
• As a result of the cross you are a new person who
behaves differently.
You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down
to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
Believing In Jesus Makes You a New Person

Therefore if any man be in
Christ, he is a new creature: old
things are passed away; behold, all
things are become new.
(2 Corinthians 5:17)
You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down
to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
Everyone Outside of Jesus has a False Identity.
If we believe that is who we are then.
We are in bondage.
To be free we must know they are lies.
And understand the truth of who we are and what we have in
Jesus Christ.
If you are working the workbook, you should have a good
understanding of the lies that keep you in bondage and the truth
that sets you free.

You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down
to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
So What Determines How We Live?
• Our perception of ourselves.
• Are we just a product of our past?
• Will it determine how we live?
• Did Jesus’ death on the cross accomplish any more then forgiveness?
• All the we are and all the we have goes back to Jesus’ finished work on the
cross.

IT IS FINISNED!!!
You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down
to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
What Was Accomplished on the Cross?
• “Redeem” in the Greek Lexicon means, to set free, redeem,
rescue.
• Strong’s – “to loosen with a redemption price as a ransom”.
• Vine’s – “to buy out especially with a view to freedom”.
• Webster’s 1812 – to liberate or rescue form captivity, bondage, or
any obligation.

IT IS FINISNED!!!
You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down
to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
What Have We Been Redeemed From?
• Psalm 103:4
• Galatians 3:18; 4:5
• Colossians 1:13
• Colossians 1:21,22
• Titus 2:14
• Hebrews 2:15
• Hebrews 9:12-14

The Pit – Hell
The Law
Power of Darkness
Accusations
All Wickedness
Fear of Death
Dead Works
Futile way of life

You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down
to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
What has God Done About Your Past?
• Romans 6:4
• 2 Corinthians 5:17
• Galatians 1:4
• 1 Peter 1:17,18

• Buried it
• Passed away - Gone
• Rescued us from it
• Redeemed us from it

You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down
to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
Why Do People G Back into Bondage?
Because they Haven't Learned, Have forgotten or Don’t Know,
1. Who God is and,
2. What He has done for them and,
3. What He has given them and,
4. Who they are in Jesus.

Because what they learned, thought and believed was
the Christian life didn’t work.
You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down
to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
What Has God Redeemed You From in this World.

The Law!!!
• Week and miserable principles that can’t set you free
and have no life in them. (Galatians 4:3-9)
• Twelve Steps and any principles (Biblical or not) that
you depend on rather than the person of Jesus Christ
(in you) and His finished work on the cross.
You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down
to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
What Truth Does 2 Peter 1 Say We forget?
• That we are Cleansed from our past sin.
• We have no more Guilt and Condemnation.
• That I have everything I need for Life and Godliness.
• I have escaped the corruption of the world because I am
Dead To Sin.

I am Complete In Jesus.
You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down
to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
The Truth!
I am not a product of my past, but I
am a product of the work of Jesus on
the cross and I can now rest in His
finished work, walk by the Spirit and
not carry out the desires of the flesh.
You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down
to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
Illustrating the Truth!
The law says, don’t do that, but do this. Avoid that and abstain
from this. Do it!
If you have died with Christ to the elementary principles of the world, why, as
if you were living in the world, do you submit yourself to decrees, such as, “Do
not handle, do not taste, do not touch!” (which all refer to things destined to
perish with use)—in accordance with the commandments and teachings of men?
These are matters which have, to be sure, the appearance of wisdom in selfmade religion and self-abasement and severe treatment of the body, but are of
no value against fleshly indulgence. (Colossians 2:20-23)

You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down
to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
Appropriating the Truth.
The Lie That Bings

The Truth That Frees

• I am a product of my past.
• I’ve got to fight sin and
say no to it.
• I need something else to
be complete.
• My sins and failures have
made God mad at me.

• I am a product of the cross.
• I need to trust Jesus and say
yes to him
• I am complete in Jesus.
• All my sins, past and present
future are forgiven.

You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down
to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
Personalizing the Truth!
God didn’t redeem me with stuff that won’t last like
silver and gold, but Jesus, the sinless one gave up His live
and poured out His Blood for me. By dying on the cross
for me and making me a new creation, Jesus has
redeemed me from the empty and futile way of life that I
learned growing up in my family and other experiences
that led me to believe that I was a hopeless and helpless
addict. (1 Peter 1:18,19 and 2 Corinthians 5:17)
You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down
to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)

Celebrate Deliverance 2

  • 1. Celebrate Deliverance Based on, Freedom From Addiction By: Mike Quarles & Neil T. Anderson
  • 2. What Keeps You in Bondage? Statement Two: I consciously and deliberately choose to submit to God by denying my self (self effort), and picking up my cross daily and following Jesus (Jesus’ finished work). You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
  • 3. We Are Not a Product of Our Past, But Product of The Cross. • It is essential to know who you are. • We act according to who we believe we are and what we believe about our self. • Understanding who we are in Jesus, • Enables us to rest in His finished work, • And as we walk by faith in the Spirit, • We will not carry out the desires of the flesh (Galatians 5:16-18). You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
  • 4. Addicts Are Looking For Love, In All the Wrong Places. • If you wish to save your life you will lose it (Matthew 16:25). • If you look for love and worth apart from Jesus you will lose meaning and purpose. • Finding identity, significance, and security in Jesus = Real Life! • Jesus is the way, the truth and the life (john 14:6). You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
  • 5. Jesus Did Not Come To: • Show us a new way, method, steps or even principles. He is the Way. • Give us correct theology or new insights, He is the Truth. • Give us a better way to live, shape us up or help us get our act together, HE IS THE LIFE. You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
  • 6. To Win the Spiritual Battle You, Must Be Under God’s Authority. • Submit to God, resist the devil and he will flee from you(James 4:7). • You can’t do one with out the other. • And we are in a spiritual battle. • We win the battle by faith and have freedom, joy and peace. • This is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith (1John 5:4). You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
  • 7. 85% of All Christians Are Not Experiencing, FREEDOM • Believing they are trapped by genetic makeup, family background and environment. • They believe they are victims of their past, so it makes no difference what they do to get free. • Our behavior is a direct result of what we believe about God, Our selves, The world and the finished work of Jesus on the cross. You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
  • 8. Understanding the Problem. We are not set free by how we behave. • We are set free by what we believe. • The truth sets us free and lies keep us in bondage. • We are not victim of our past. • We are victors through Jesus and the cross. But thanks be to God. He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 15:57) You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
  • 9. Why Can’t We Stop Our Self-Destructive Behavior? Because addiction is bondage and, Bondage doesn’t respond to. • logic, • commonsense, • and clear thinking. You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
  • 10. Understanding the Problem. • Behavior is a result of belief. • It wont’ make any difference what we do to get free, because: • We always act consistently with how we perceive ourselves, and what we believe. Our actions are always consistent with what we perceive and believe. You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
  • 11. Who Are You? Are You a Product Of: • Your family background an environment? • Your genetic makeup? • Your Past? NO! You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
  • 12. So, Who Are You? • You are a product of the cross. • You are a new creation – dead to sin. • You’re God’s beloved Son or daughter – loved and accepted. • You are the righteousness of God in Jesus Christ. • Jesus Christ is in you and your are in Jesus Christ. • Jesus is your life, you are complete in Jesus. You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
  • 13. But The Problem is: We are all born with basic needs to be, loved and accepted and have worth. • But only God can meet these needs. • And not having a relationship with God, We meet our needs the best way we can. • We develop ways to cope, succeed and survive apart form God. • This is the flesh, and we believe it is our life and where we get our false Identity from. You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
  • 14. Everyone Has a False Identity in the Flesh. • Most believe they are insecure, inadequate, inferior, guilty and that there is something wrong with them. • This belief is developed from the messages that we receive as we grow up, • From the world, the flesh and Satan. Lies we believe about self keep us in bondage. You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
  • 15. Making a personal Appraisal. • God’s plan for us, is to look to Him to meet all of our needs, but • We have attempted to meet our needs in our own resources. • We develop ways to cope, succed, survive and defend ourselves independent of God. • These flesh patterns develop into strongholds and addictive behavior. You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
  • 16. How We Get Into Bondage. World – Family Background, hurts, traumas, abuse… Flesh – How we meet needs of acceptance and worth apart from God, failures, successes, problems… Satan – Lies about who we are, who God is and how He feels about us, and what we need in life… False Identity Insecure Inadequate Inferior Guilt You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
  • 17. False Identity Affects Our Outlook on, Life, Relationships, Performance • It sets us up for failure in all these areas. • We struggle, strive and stumble, and we have a sense of impending doom, so we turn to our fleshly lust – addiction. • It seems to work for a while and that is why it develops into a stronghold and is so difficult to find freedom from. You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
  • 18. Big Problem with a Dysfunctional Family • Children are the best observers of what is going on, but the worst interpreters and, • Unable to distinguish between the truth of what parents say and do and what is false. • So we end up with a false Identity in the flesh and it controls all of our life. • The Problem is what we believe about self. You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
  • 19. How We Get Into Bondage. World – Family Background, hurts, traumas, abuse… Flesh – How we meet needs of acceptance and worth apart from God, failures, successes, problems… Satan – Lies about who we are, who God is and how He feels about us, and what we need in life… False Identity Insecure Inadequate Inferior Guilt Something is wrong with me! You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
  • 20. Our Addictions From a False Identity. Unacceptable Very Bad Acceptable Irresponsibility Alcoholic – Drug Addict Workaholic Rebellious Womanizer – Homosexuality Driven to Succeed Procrastinate Sex addiction – Food addict Avoid Intimacy Quit Dead beat – Loser - Quitter Perfectionist Judgmental Un excepting – un feeling Un able to receive love Anxious and Fearful Obsessive-compulsive Materialistic Lying Codependent Controlling You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
  • 21. The Root of Addictive Behavior is a False Identity. • Trying to change behavior doesn’t work and is futile and frustrating. • If you change your behavior you haven’t changed what needs changing • The finished work of Christ on the cross is the answer. • As a result of the cross you are a new person who behaves differently. You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
  • 22. Believing In Jesus Makes You a New Person Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. (2 Corinthians 5:17) You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
  • 23. Everyone Outside of Jesus has a False Identity. If we believe that is who we are then. We are in bondage. To be free we must know they are lies. And understand the truth of who we are and what we have in Jesus Christ. If you are working the workbook, you should have a good understanding of the lies that keep you in bondage and the truth that sets you free. • • • • You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
  • 24. So What Determines How We Live? • Our perception of ourselves. • Are we just a product of our past? • Will it determine how we live? • Did Jesus’ death on the cross accomplish any more then forgiveness? • All the we are and all the we have goes back to Jesus’ finished work on the cross. IT IS FINISNED!!! You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
  • 25. What Was Accomplished on the Cross? • “Redeem” in the Greek Lexicon means, to set free, redeem, rescue. • Strong’s – “to loosen with a redemption price as a ransom”. • Vine’s – “to buy out especially with a view to freedom”. • Webster’s 1812 – to liberate or rescue form captivity, bondage, or any obligation. IT IS FINISNED!!! You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
  • 26. What Have We Been Redeemed From? • Psalm 103:4 • Galatians 3:18; 4:5 • Colossians 1:13 • Colossians 1:21,22 • Titus 2:14 • Hebrews 2:15 • Hebrews 9:12-14 • 1 peter 1:18 • • • • • • • • The Pit – Hell The Law Power of Darkness Accusations All Wickedness Fear of Death Dead Works Futile way of life You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
  • 27. What has God Done About Your Past? • Romans 6:4 • 2 Corinthians 5:17 • Galatians 1:4 • 1 Peter 1:17,18 • Buried it • Passed away - Gone • Rescued us from it • Redeemed us from it You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
  • 28. Why Do People G Back into Bondage? Because they Haven't Learned, Have forgotten or Don’t Know, 1. Who God is and, 2. What He has done for them and, 3. What He has given them and, 4. Who they are in Jesus. Because what they learned, thought and believed was the Christian life didn’t work. You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
  • 29. What Has God Redeemed You From in this World. The Law!!! • Week and miserable principles that can’t set you free and have no life in them. (Galatians 4:3-9) • Twelve Steps and any principles (Biblical or not) that you depend on rather than the person of Jesus Christ (in you) and His finished work on the cross. You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
  • 30. What Truth Does 2 Peter 1 Say We forget? • That we are Cleansed from our past sin. • We have no more Guilt and Condemnation. • That I have everything I need for Life and Godliness. • I have escaped the corruption of the world because I am Dead To Sin. I am Complete In Jesus. You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
  • 31. The Truth! I am not a product of my past, but I am a product of the work of Jesus on the cross and I can now rest in His finished work, walk by the Spirit and not carry out the desires of the flesh. You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
  • 32. Illustrating the Truth! The law says, don’t do that, but do this. Avoid that and abstain from this. Do it! If you have died with Christ to the elementary principles of the world, why, as if you were living in the world, do you submit yourself to decrees, such as, “Do not handle, do not taste, do not touch!” (which all refer to things destined to perish with use)—in accordance with the commandments and teachings of men? These are matters which have, to be sure, the appearance of wisdom in selfmade religion and self-abasement and severe treatment of the body, but are of no value against fleshly indulgence. (Colossians 2:20-23) You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
  • 33. Appropriating the Truth. The Lie That Bings The Truth That Frees • I am a product of my past. • I’ve got to fight sin and say no to it. • I need something else to be complete. • My sins and failures have made God mad at me. • I am a product of the cross. • I need to trust Jesus and say yes to him • I am complete in Jesus. • All my sins, past and present future are forgiven. You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
  • 34. Personalizing the Truth! God didn’t redeem me with stuff that won’t last like silver and gold, but Jesus, the sinless one gave up His live and poured out His Blood for me. By dying on the cross for me and making me a new creation, Jesus has redeemed me from the empty and futile way of life that I learned growing up in my family and other experiences that led me to believe that I was a hopeless and helpless addict. (1 Peter 1:18,19 and 2 Corinthians 5:17) You were redeemed form the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers. (1 Peter 1:18)
