In a multiprogramming system, multiple processes exist concurrently in main memory. Each process alternates between using a processor and waiting for some event to occur, such as the completion of an I O operation. The processor or processors are kept busy by executing one process while the others wait. The key to multiprogramming is scheduling. CPU scheduling deals with the problem of deciding which of the processes in the ready queue is to be allocated the CPU. By switching the CPU among processor the operating system can make the computer more productive. Scheduling affectes the performance of the system because it determines which processes will wait and which will progress. "We have already achieved major gains in energy-efficiency for both the datacenter and HPC equipment. For example, the PUE of the Swiss Supercomputer (CSCS) datacenter prior to 2012 was 1.8, but the current PUE is about 1.25; a factor of ~1.5 improvement. HPC system improvements have also been very strong, as evidenced by FLOPS/Watt performance on the Green500 List. While we have seen gains from data center and HPC system efficiency, there are also energy-efficiency gains to be had from software- application performance improvements, for example. This panel will explore what HPC software capabilities were most helpful over the past years in improving HPC system energy efficiency? An operating system scheduler is expected to not allow processor stay idle if there is any process ready or waiting for its execution. This problem gains more importance as the numbers of processes always outnumber the processors by large margins. It is in this regard that schedulers are provided with the ability to preempt a running process, by following any scheduling algorithm, and give us an illusion of simultaneous running of several processes. A process which is allowed to utilize CPU resources for a fixed quantum of time (termed as timeslice for preemption) and is then preempted for another waiting process. Each of these 'process preemption' leads to considerable overhead of CPU cycles which are valuable resource for runtime execution. In this work we try to utilize the historical performances of a scheduler and predict the nature of current running process, thereby trying to reduce the number of preemptions. We propose a machine-learning module to predict a better performing timeslice which is calculated based on static knowledge base and adaptive reinforcement learning based suggestive module. Results for an "adaptive timeslice parameter" for preemption show good saving on CPU cycles and efficient throughput time.

Algorithms developed for scheduling applications on heterogeneous multiprocessor system focus on a single objective such as execution time, cost or total data transmission time. However, if more than one objective (e.g. execution cost and time, which may be in conflict) are considered, then the problem becomes more challenging. This project is proposed to develop a multiobjective scheduling algorithm using Evolutionary techniques for scheduling a set of dependent tasks on available resources in a multiprocessor environment which will minimize the makespan and reliability cost. A Non-dominated sorting Genetic Algorithm-II procedure has been developed to get the pareto- optimal solutions. NSGA-II is a Elitist Evolutionary algorithm, and it takes the initial parental solution without any changes, in all iteration to eliminate the problem of loss of some pareto-optimal solutions.NSGA-II uses crowding distance concept to create a diversity of the solutions.

CPU scheduling algorithms have a significant function in multiprogramming operating systems. When the CPU scheduling is effective a high rate of computation could be done correctly and also the system will maintain in a stable state. As well as, CPU scheduling algorithms are the main service in the operating systems that fulfill the maximum utilization of the CPU. This paper aims to compare the characteristics of the CPU scheduling algorithms towards which one is the best algorithm for gaining a higher CPU utilization. The comparison has been done between ten scheduling algorithms with presenting different parameters, such as performance, algorithm’s complexity, algorithm’s problem, average waiting times, algorithm’s advantages-disadvantages, allocation way, etc. The main purpose of the article is to analyze the CPU scheduler in such a way that suits the scheduling goals. However, knowing the algorithm type which is most suitable for a particular situation by showing its full properties.

Multi-core CPUs become increasingly popular on server-grade hardware as well as end-user desktop PCs or laptops. Necessary efforts are taken in the community towards developing applications optimized for multi-core architecture [1], still every user is expecting to run applications or programs with more speed than normal execution. In order to achieve maximum possible performance, there is a need for fine tuning in the areas of Operating System scheduling, Process Priority and CPU Affinity. So this paper presents PI-tool, to aid user by changing priority and CPU Affinity to his application or program at runtime to achieve better performance .The PI-tool is compared with Red Hat TUNA tool with NQueens program the results are presented for evaluation.

This paper presents the research work on multicore microcontrollers using parallel, and time critical programming for the embedded systems. Due to the high complexity and limitations, it is very hard to work on the application development phase on such architectures. The experimental results mentioned in the paper are based on xCORE multicore microcontroller form XMOS®. The paper also imitates multi-tasking and parallel programming for the same platform. The tasks assigned to multiple cores are executed simultaneously, which saves the time and energy. The relative study for multicore processor and multicore controller concludes that micro architecture based controller having multiple cores illustrates better performance in time critical multi-tasking environment. The research work mentioned here not only illustrates the functionality of multicore microcontroller, but also express the novel technique of programming, profiling and optimization on such platforms in real time environments.

I propose to apply Systems development method utilizing Reverse modeling and Model-based Simulation(SRMS), in order to solve the issues of derivational development. Derivational development is a development method for developing derived products based on products already been released. Many organizations developing embedded system have been applying derivational development to improve development efficiency, time-to-market, and product quality. However, applying derivational development to large-scale embedded systems in a traditional way to performanec requirements of higher functionality is of high risk. In addition, as requirements of embedded systems for dependability are extremely high, the dependability of development process and safety of the product must be proven by evidence. Therefore, there is a possibility to significantly inhibit the evidence of dependability on embedded systems by continuing derivational development over many years. We apply SRMS in order to solve these issues. In this presentation, I propose a methodology to solve issues of derivational development by applying SRMS to an SoC Equipped Multi Function Peripheral/Printer. Performance evaluation and energy consumption estimation of SoC are performed in the early stages of the SoC development. Estimating the performace and the energy consumption by a high level of abstraction model-based simulation. Because at the early stages of SoC development, modeling with a high level of abstraction is required for both the system architecture of the SoC and the behavior of the System. The proposed method is applied for an actual embedded system in an MFP - Multi Function Peripheral/Printer. Proposed method SRMS is promising to solve the issues of derivational developmnrt in the embedded system development.

In the area of Computer Science, Parallel job scheduling is an important field of research. Finding a best suitable processor on the high performance or cluster computing for user submitted jobs plays an important role in measuring system performance. A new scheduling technique called communication aware scheduling is devised and is capable of handling serial jobs, parallel jobs, mixed jobs and dynamic jobs. This work focuses the comparison of communication aware scheduling with the available parallel job scheduling techniques and the experimental results show that communication aware scheduling performs better when compared to the available parallel job scheduling techniques.

Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.

The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
