What  I  wish  I  knew  about  working  at   an  agency  is…   “…There’s  always  a  learning  curve.  Agencies  are  always  pushing  to  do  it  “be;er”   so  with  that  comes  a  constant  need  to  push  yourself  to  bring  addi-onal   thinking  and  change-­‐it-­‐up.  Crea-vity  stretches  across  every  element  of  an   agency  –  not  just  the  crea-ve  department.”   “…yes,  you  can  make  work  your  life,  but  it  doesn’t  have  to  be.  People  have  this   percep-on  that  agency  people  have  to  work  80hrs/week.  That’s  any  company,   not  just  an  agency.  Make  sure  you  find  the  right  culture  fit  for  you.”   “…every  experience  from  day  1  is  a  stepping  stone  to  wherever  it  is  you’ll  go.”   “…how  fast-­‐paced  and  hec-c.    (I  got  lucky  bc  I  like  that  kind  of  environment!!)”   “…I  would  not  get  paid  much  at  an  agency  early  on,  but  the  rela-onships  and   learnings  I  received  were  more  valuable  to  my  career  than  the  money  at  that   -me.  It  has  framed  where  I  am  today.”   “…  every  agency  is  different.”   “…There  are  new  challenges  every  day,  you  will  work  your  ass  off,  but  it’s  all  worth   it.”

The  best  advice  I  have  for  someone   looking  for  a  job  at  an  agency  is…   “…get  to  know  people.  Set  up  informal  interviews.  We’ve  all  been  there  and  we’re  happy  to   help.  Don’t  be  afraid  to  reach  out.  Oh,  and  Twi;er.  Reaching  out  on  Twi;er  landed  me   my  agency  job    “   “…  learn  wherever  you  can.  The  job  you  start  with  is  just  a  stepping  stone  to  figure  out  what   you  are  passionate  about…you  don’t  know  that  yet  at  22.”   “…the  agency  is  only  as  good  as  the  people  working  there.    Office  space,  clients,  trends,   money  changes  –  if  you  aren’t  working  with  people  you  can  learn  from  and  enjoy  being   around…it’s  not  worth  it!”   “…think  about  the  people  that  you  will  work  with  day  to  day.  Will  they  inspire  you  and   simply  brighten  your  day?”   “…it’s  all  about  who  you  know!  Networking  (via  events,  Linkedin,  Twi;er,  etc.)  are  key!”   “…Seize  opportuni-es  to  get  to  know  people  across  disciplines  and  understand  how  each   func-on  operates.  Understanding  the  holis-c  process  and  perspec-ves  of  each  func-on   will  go  far  in  building  rela-onships  across  the  agency  and  eleva-ng  the  level  of  your   own  output.    Plus,  the  backgrounds  of  agency  personnel  are  quite  varied  and  could  help   to  shape  your  own  path.”
