3. Who will tutor you and what will you need to do
to achieve your qualification
• Your DP lead tutor is Jonathan Whitham. He will
support and guide you through this flexible
learning environment to make it a stimulating and
rewarding experience
• You need to complete all the guided learning
activities and mini assessments
• Participate in mandatory tele-conferences to get
signed off from each programme section
• Do 12 hours of work-related coaching practice
• Complete 3 assignments:
– work based business case/ coaching practice reflections/ coaching diary

• Gain a critical understanding of the role and
responsibilities of a workplace coach/mentor
• How coaching/ mentoring can impact an organisation
• Assess your own skills, behaviours and knowledge as
a coach/mentor
• Provide evidence of your own development journey in
becoming a more effective coach/mentor
• Plan for your continuous on-going development as a
coach
• Plan, deliver and review coaching/mentoring in your
organisation

6. Programme requirements:3 mandatory
units
• Unit 1:Understanding the skills, principles and
practice of effective management coaching and
mentoring to enable learners to understand the role
and contribution of coaching and mentoring, and build
a business case.
• Unit 2:Reviewing own ability as a management coach
or mentor to give learners the ability to critically
review their own personal qualities, skills and
competence
• Unit 3:Demonstrate their ability to plan, deliver and
review at least 12 hours of coaching and mentoring in
the workplace
7. Programme process
• Duration: 37 guided learning hours (GLH); 2 hours
tutorial; 12 hours coaching practice = total notional
learning time likely to be 130 hours
• Learning and development: distance learning via DP
ILM learning zone; telephone conferencing; observed
coaching practice, meeting fellow students to review
learning and experiences
• Assessment: 2 work-based assignments and a
coaching diary
8. ILM Assignments
Understanding the skills, principles and practice of effective
Module 500
management coaching and mentoring
To enable learners to understand the role and contribution of coaching and
mentoring to individuals and organisations and make a case for using
management coaching and mentoring in their organisations.
Module 501 Reviewing own ability as a management coach or mentor
To enable learners to demonstrate their ability to undertake a workplace
management coaching or mentoring programme.
Undertaking management coaching or mentoring in the
Module 503
workplace
To enable managers to review their ability to perform effectively as
management coaches or mentors.
9. Assessment Strategy: Overview
Assessment comprises of two components set by ILM:
firstly, DP Centre assessment and quality assurance,
and secondly external verification by an ILM Verifier.
Workshop activities and candidate workbooks are not
assessed.
The areas that are assessed are:
•Module 500: Work-based Assignment
•Module 501: Coaching/Mentoring Diary
•Module 503: Reflective Assignment
Assessment completion time is outside of the GLH
10. Assignment assessment: Module 500
Module 500
This assignment requires the candidate to demonstrate their understanding of the context in which
effective coaching and mentoring operates including the individual and organisational benefits of
coaching and mentoring. The candidate should also be able to show their understanding of the
practical requirements of coaches and mentors operating with managers and professionals within
organisations.
The WBA should provide answers to the following four areas:

11. Assignment assessment: Module 503
Module 503
This assignment requires the candidate to reflect on their performance as a coach and/or mentor.
The WBA should provide answers to the following four areas:

12. Assignment assessments: Coaching Diary Module
501
• You are required to demonstrate the practical application of coaching or
mentoring in practice within an organisational, managerial or professional
role.
• You are required to do a minimum of 12 hours of formal and contracted coaching or mentoring
and show:
– How you have reflected on your performance, in your diary
– Complete a reflective log on your performance in which you record the coaching/ mentoring activity, the
responses of the learners you are coaching/mentoring, and reflect on your practice to assess your potential as
a coach/mentor, identifying areas for performance improvement.
• The Coaching/Mentoring Diary includes the following elements:
– Section 1: Plan and prepare for coaching or mentoring programmes: Provide evidence of planning,
contracting and agreeing coaching or mentoring programmes with one or more individuals.
– Section 2: Undertake coaching sessions :Maintain an auditable diary of coaching records to show that the
candidate has delivered a minimum of 12 hours’ coaching and/or mentoring showing that they have:
– identified individual development needs and agreed goals for the programme;
– planned individual sessions and organised the materials and resources needed to support them;
– delivered and recorded the coaching;
– reviewed individuals’ progress;
– Section 3: Reflections on your performance as a coach or mentor: Reflect on and review the candidate’s
performance, informed by feedback from participants and observers.
13. The Coaching and mentoring diary: Module 501

14. Certification Criteria and Final Results
The Level 5 Certificate in Coaching and Mentoring in
Management is awarded to participants who satisfactorily
complete:
•the programme of learning and development (37 hours)
•the 2 Assignments
•the Coaching/Mentoring Diary
There are 3 possible final outcomes:
•PASS or FAIL or DID NOT COMPLETE
•At DP we will work with you to ensure that you pass; however
there are some occasions where candidates choose not to
complete the programme which is a personal choice

15. You should now have a good understanding of the journey
ahead.

part of your Guided learning hours and is therefore required reading for the programme.
