4. Take My Life And Let It Be
Take my life and let it be
Consecrated, Lord, to Thee.
Take my moments and my days,
Let them flow in endless praise.
Let them flow in endless praise.
5. Take my will and make it Thine,
It shall be no longer mine.
Take my heart, it is Thine own,
It shall be Thy royal throne.
It shall be Thy royal throne.
6. Take my love, my Lord, I pour
At Thy feet its treasure store.
Take myself and I will be
Ever, only, all for Thee.
Ever, only, all for Thee.
7.
8. And Can It Be
And can it be that I should gain
An interest in the Savior’s blood?
Died He for me, who caused His pain—
For me, who Him to death pursued?
Amazing love! How can it be,
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
Amazing love! How can it be,
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
9. He left His Father’s throne above
So free, so infinite His grace—
Emptied Himself of all but love,
And bled for Adam’s helpless race:
’Tis mercy all, immense and free,
For O my God, it found out me!
’Tis mercy all, immense and free,
For O my God, it found out me!
10. No condemnation now I dread;
Jesus, and all in Him, is mine;
Alive in Him, my living Head,
And clothed in righteousness divine,
Bold I approach th’eternal throne,
And claim the crown, through Christ my own.
Bold I approach th’eternal throne,
And claim the crown, through Christ my own.

21. A Spiritual Journey into Mission
TheDisciplesClass,July13, 2014
Over the last 40 years I have been asked by
a numberof peoplea rather interestingand
no money–few
loved ones–danger from terrorists–etc.
probing question. Why did you choose to
be a cross-cultural missionary as a career?
Afewstatedtheobvious…
comforts–lack of medical care–away from
22. role models and mentorsANSWER:
Their story – by book or in person
Their lives – faith and discipline
Their message – reasoned theology
- exciting, worthwhile?
- real, focused, can I relate?
- challenging, attainable?
23. The Message of the Cross
Though raised in church, it was not until age
27, that Ted felt convicted of his sin and his
need to be made right with God by believing in
the atoning death of Christ on the cross.
All who know the Bethany story identify this
foundational Biblical teaching with Rev. T.A.
Hegre, Bethany’s founder and first President.
Immediately Ted’s thirst to know God was
evident by an insatiable desire to study the
Bible and to read Christian books.
24. But his study revealed his failure: his weakness
to overcome temptation. He recognized he
was not living up to the standard of holiness
required in the Bible: victory over temptation.
When he asked for help from Church leaders
he was told, “We all fail. We try, but we sin
because are just weak fallen human beings.”
Ted Hegre was not satisfied with that answer.
He could not accept that a loving God would
require us to be holy and then condemn us for
failing, when his target is impossible to hit.
25. Constant failure/defeat is contrary to scripture.
Romans 6:20-22
“In those days you were slaves to sin, you
weren’t concerned with doing what is
right. And what was the result? It was not
good, since now you are ashamed of the
things you used to do, things that end in
eternal doom. But now you are free from
the power of sin and have become slaves
to God. Now you do those things that lead
to holiness andresultin eternallife.”NLT
Hegre read and studied passages like…
26. Hegre found principles in scripture for living
a victorious, God pleasing and fruitful life.
Death to self.
Believing Prayer.
Faith in Christ’s full work on the cross.
The Holy Spirit’s power within/through us.
Faith comes by hearing…the Word.
27. Hegre began to talk to friends aboutwhat he
was discovering in the Bible. They encouraged
him to start a Bible Studyin his home (1938).
A manager of a retail business (full-time), he
loved to study and slowly began to develop
his teaching gift.
By 1942 the weekly Bible studyhad grown to
about 60 mostly young peoplegathering his
small home in southMinneapolis.
28. Death to self –
Colossians 3:3,5
For you died, and your life is now hidden
withChristinGod. NIV
vs. 5
Put to death,therefore,whateverbelongs
toyour earthlynature:sexualimmorality…
greed,whichisidolatry.NIV
Two actions: 1) We died with Christ – done.
2) We “put to death” or die to self – our part.
what does it mean?
29. Romans 6: 6-7 Jesus achieved it on the cross
“Forweknowthatouroldselfwascrucified
with him so that the body of sin might be
doneawaywith[destroyed],thatweshould
nolongerbeslavestosin—because anyone
whohasdied hasbeen freedfromsin.”NIV
Galatians 5:24 our part – seize it, apply it
“Those who belong to Christ Jesus have
crucified the sinful nature [flesh] with its
passions and desires.” NIV
30. Romans 6:11
In the same way, count yourselves dead
to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. NIV
1 Peter 2:24
He personally carried away our sins in his
own body on the cross, so that we can be
dead to sin and alive for what is right. NLT
Death to self – I die to my ambition/career,
to my possessions/money, to my plans,
to my own way,to be valued/affirmed…
31. Romans 12:1-2
“And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead
with you to give your bodies to God. Let
them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind
he can accept. When you think of what he
has done for you, is this too much to ask?
Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this
world, but let God transform you into a new
person by changing the way you think.
Then you will know what God wants you to
do, and you will know how good and
pleasingandperfecthiswillreallyis.”NLT
32. DeathtoselfisfullsurrendertoChrist.
Luke22:42“…notmywill,butyoursbedone.”
“There is a surrender to God that is so
complete and so irrevocable that the only
word that can properly describe it is death,
death to self and death to my own way.”
T.A. HEGRE, 1960
Jesus was fully committed to do his fathers
will—eventobebeatenandtodieonacross.
So we to must fully surrender to God’s will.
33. Faithin Christ’s full workonthecross.
1. Christ died for us – our substitute.
2. Christ died as us/with us – our deliverer
3. Christ died in us daily – our discipline
Rev. 1:5b, To himwho lovesusandhasfreed
us fromour sinsby hisblood…
Gal. 2:20, Ihavebeencrucifiedwith Christ
andInolongerlive,butChristlivesinme.
Luke 9:23,If anyonewouldcomeafterme,
hemustdeny himself andtakeup hiscross
dailyandfollowme.
34. The Holy Spirit’s power within us.
Acts 1:4-5,8
“…Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father
sends you what he promised. Remember, I
have told you this before. John baptized with
water, but in just a few days you will be
baptizedwiththeHolySpirit.”vs.8“Butwhen
the Holy Spirit comes upon you, you will
receive power and will tell people about me
everywhere–in Jerusalem, throughout Judea,
in Samaria, and to the ends of the
earth.”
35. Faith comes by hearing…the Word.
Romans 10:17
“Yet faith comes from listening to this
message of the good news—the Good
News about Christ.” NLT
Ourfaithisweak/starved becausewedonot
hear/read the Word. Listen and keep on
listening. Read the Word. Feed your faith.

36. Believing Prayer
Scripture is clear that we have a huge plus/
advantage in that we have access by prayer to
an almighty God who loves us and desires to
be in communion/close relationship with us.
Tim Lewis, Int’l President of Frontiers, “Life is
War.” Our battle is with spiritual forces.
Believing prayer is our access. Christ is our
advocate and the Holy Spirit is our intercessor.
We cry out to God in battles we face (life).
