Abstract : In this paper multi sensor satellite data i.e. IRS LISS III or Landsat TM/ETM+ or OCEANSAT- 1(IRS-P4) consisting of an Ocean Color Monitoring operating in eight spectral band data are used for extracting information useful to hydrological projects such as monitoring the water quality of lakes. Changes of the area extent of the lakes are estimated from the multitemporal satellite images. Surface water temperature patterns of the lakes are mapped and anomalies are identified. Emphasis is given on the investigation of capabilities of IRS LISS III or Landsat TM/ETM+ or OCEANSAT-1(IRS-P4) data in monitoring water quality of lakes. A classification scheme regarding various water quality parameters (Secchi depth, Turbitidity, Chlorophylle –α and Total Total phosphorus) is created based on combinations of different bands.

— In this study, soil samples were collected from two locations: Samawa and Rumetha in southern Iraq. The samples from each location were split into two datasets: calibration set and validation set. VNIR reflectance (350-2500 nm) and GIS-Kriging were used in combination with Partial Least Square (PLS) to predict total N. only two regions reported higher determination coefficient R 2 and lower Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) than the other wavelength regions. PLS calibration models yielded an R 2 of 0.96 and 0.97 for Rumetha and 0.87 and 0.94 for Samawa location in bands at 500-600 and 800-1000 nm, respectively. The potential of VNIR-based and GIS-Kriging models to predict new unknown soil samples were assessed by using validation datasets from both studied locations. The cross-validation of GIS-Kriging models were unsatisfactory predicted with an Q 2 of 0.28 between laboratory-measured and predicted total N values for Rumetha and 0.43 for Samawa location. While VNIR-based validation models achieved highly predictive power with an R 2 v of 0.84 between laboratory-measured and predicted total N values for Rumetha and 0.85 for Samawa location. These results reveal extremely decreasing in model predictive ability when shifting from VNIR Spectroscopy method to GIS-Kriging.

Measurement of soil carbon is the focus of attention of present and future international conventions and agreements, related to global climate change. Past inventories and current carbon stock inventories involve different analytical methods, and methodological biases and uncertainties should be reduced to develop reliable estimates of the effects of land uses changes on total organic carbon. Furthermore, the carbon-equivalent is highly variable, and there is the need of using a specific correction factor for each location, resulting from the combination of land use, textural gradients, and sampling depth. In this context, the aims of this study were creating correction equations for the determinations through wet combustion (Walkley-Black- WB) for a Rhodic Hapludox based on the determinations made through dry combustion (CS) at different depths and management systems. The experimental design was 4 x 5 factorial with 3 replications. Treatments were: Conventional Tillage (CT); Minimum Tillage (MT); No-till with chisel plowing (NTC) and No-Till (NT). The collection depths were: 0-2.5; 2.5-5; 5-10; 10-20 and 20-40 cm. The measured carbon equivalent values ranged from 1.06 to 1.18 and were dependent on land use and soil depth. Rhodic Hapludox under different management presented the following order of carbon equivalent values: NTC < CT < NT < MT. The carbon equivalent values increased with depth. The high ratio between C-WB and C-CS (R2= 0.75, p= 0.0001) justifies the use of correction factors.

Groundwater is used for a variety of purposes, including irrigation, industrial, drinking, and manufacturing. Assessment and mapping of quality of groundwater is an important because the physical and chemical characteristics of groundwater determine its suitability for agricultural, industrial and domestic usages. The present study area i.e, District Anantnag lies in southern part of Jammu and Kashmir and is characterized by undulating topography, rugged mountains. The habitants of the study area mainly depend on ground water resources viz; springs and tube wells. The present study attempts to explore the best spatial interpolation technique that will best represent the actual ground water quality of district anantnag. In the present study various maps representing various physio-chemcial properties of ground water quality were generated using spatial interpolation techniques viz; Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW) and Nearest Neighbor (NN). Out of total 92 ground water samples, 8 points were preserved for cross validation between the two interpolation techniques using Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) test. Finally it can be conclude that IDW is the most preferable technique for spatial interpolation measurement of ground water quality data.

The present study was carried out to know the Fluoride content in the groundwater. The occurrence of fluoride is mainly due to the over exploitation of groundwater. The ground water is contaminated with Fluoride because rock beds containing fluoride minirals come in contact with groundwater. The more incidence of dental fluorosis among the rural mass made it necessary to find out the fluoride contamination of ground water. And adopt remedial measures to the people on the risk of fluorosis. A total of 50 Groundwater (GW) samples were collected during the study period. The objective of the study is to find out the spatial distribution of fluoride in pre-monsoon and post-monsoon period using GIS and remote sensing. The fluoride concentration in groundwater varies from 1.2 mg/l to 3.6 mg/L in pre-monsoon and 1.0 mg/L to 3.6 mg/l in post-monsoon. The overall distribution of fluoride concentration in the study area during the pre-monsoon and post-monsoon periods indicates slight dilution effect owing to fresh water recharge on account of rain fall. The analysis was made in GIS for identifying the evaluation fluoride contamination region in the study area. The concentration of fluoride above 1.5 mg/l of fluoride concentration, which is a maximum permissible limit recently suggested by Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS) (BIS: 10500, 2010) was observed in 45 samples in pre-monsoon 43 samples in post-monsoon and remaining 5 and 7 samples in safe limit respectively. This study identified that Fluoride concentration is 2 – 3 ppm (46%) and 3 – 4 ppm (28%) in pre-monsoon and 25% in post-monsoon in Ranebennur Taluka, Haveri district. Further remedial measures for fluoride have to be carried out in the study area. Mapping of high fluoride areas are useful to plan and to bring safe drinking water from low fluoride areas

ABSTRACT: Heavy metals in the environment may reach to toxic levels to humans and animals due to tannery effluents, but there is insufficient information about heavy metals pollution and distribution by tanneries. The distribution and sources of heavy metals in soils of Challawa industrial estate area were evaluated using multivariate statistical analysis after determining metals concentrations by atomic absorption spectroscopy. The results of the Principal Component Analysis and Hierarchical Cluster Analysis suggested that variation in heavy metals concentrations are largely related to tannery operations. The Linear Discriminant Analysis revealed that soils around the tanneries and dumpsites are having high contents of Cr, Pb, and Zn. The metal concentrations showed significant difference (P < 0.05) between tannery and control soil samples. This confirmed the contamination of soils with toxic heavy metals at specific sites of the tanneries, and indicated the need to monitor and remediate to safeguard the environment.

ABSTRACT: This study investigated the hydrogeochemical characteristics and microbiological pollution of groundwater in Wadi Al Bih limestone aquifer, Ras Al Khaimah area, northern United Arab Emirates (UAE). Results indicate that the decrease of groundwater exploitation in Wadi Al Bih basin from 58 million cubic meter (MCM) during the period 1991-1995 to 22 MCM during the period 2011-2015, has increased groundwater storage, raised hydraulic heads by 1 m in Al Burayrat area and 16 m near Wadi Al Bih main dam, and decreased the average groundwater salinity by 30% in Wadi Al Bih well field and 45% in Al Burayrat well field. Results of chemical analyses showed noticeable fluctuations in groundwater temperature, EC, and TDS contents, rather than concentrations of all ions. The November 2014 and June 2015 isosalinity contour maps indicate that the groundwater salinity increases from east to west, in the direction of groundwater flow. The groundwater in the eastern part of Wadi Al Bih is good for domestic purposes and irrigation. However, the water hardness is high because the aquifer is predominantly composed of limestone. Wadi Al Bih limestone aquifer is highly sensitive to urban and agricultural activities, and several well were recorded to have Coliform bacteria in Wadi Al Bih and Al Burayrat areas

Since the recent development of UAVs(Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) and digital sensors technology has enabled the acquisition of high-resolution image data, it is considered that the image data of riverside can be analysed. Therefore, this study analyses the applicability of remote sensing techniques through image analysis in river systems and habitats. The target stream in this study was the Cheongmi stream and the applicability of the river environmental evaluation technique was analysed through image analysis. The satellite images used for the analysis of river topography and environments were compared with the aerial images taken by a micro UAV), and the river environmental evaluation was carried out with the field research at the same time. The data acquisition range and application limit by river environmental evaluation technique proposed previously were evaluated, and as a result, it was found that it was possible to draw various evaluation parameters using a drone that could take an image at a low altitude in comparison to satellite images.

Two studied stations were involved in this study included Sharq–Dijla and Al-Karamah water purification stations. Water samples collected from four sites with three replicates for each sample of each site of the river and the station: before, after, inside the stations and at the pipe. The study started in October 2012 to September 2013. Results showed that the minimum level of water temperature was 11oC during (December-January) at Sharq –Dijla.While the maximum level was 30oC during (August-September) at both AL-Karamah and Sharq –Dijla stations. pH results revealed that the highest level of pH was 8.63 during (October-November) at AL-Karamah station followed by the lowest level was 6.73 in(February- March) at Sharq –Dijla station. The highest level of EC was 1068 µS/cm during (April-May) at Sharq-Dijla station, while the lowest level was 693 µS/cm during (August- September) at the same station. The results of DO showed that the highest level was 11.51 ppm during (December-January) at Sharq- Dijla station, while the lowest level was 4.25 ppm during (August- September) at AL- Karamah station.The BOD results recorded the highest level of BOD5 was 4.49 ppm during (August- September), and the lowest level was 0.67 ppm during (December-January) both results at Sharq-Dijla station. Total hardness showed that the highest level was about 404 ppm during (December-January) at AL-Karamah station, and the lowest level 162 ppm during (August- September) at the same station. Free chlorine measurements found with Iraqi limits and WHO for these two stations. The highest value of Iron concentration was 3.30ppm in (December-January) at Al-Karamah station, while the lowest value was1.63ppm in (August- September) at Sharq–Dijla station.

The overall distribution of fluoride concentration in the study area during the pre-monsoon and post-monsoon periods indicates slight dilution effect owing to fresh water recharge on account of rain fall. The analysis was made in GIS for identifying the evaluation fluoride contamination region in the study area. The concentration of fluoride above 1.5 mg/l of fluoride concentration, which is a maximum permissible limit recently suggested by Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS) (BIS: 10500, 2010) was observed in 45 samples in pre-monsoon 43 samples in post-monsoon and remaining 5 and 7 samples in safe limit respectively. This study identified that Fluoride concentration is 2 – 3 ppm (46%) and 3 – 4 ppm (28%) in pre-monsoon and 25% in post-monsoon in Ranebennur Taluka, Haveri district. Further remedial measures for fluoride have to be carried out in the study area. Mapping of high fluoride areas are useful to plan and to bring safe drinking water from low fluoride areas

ABSTRACT: Heavy metals in the environment may reach to toxic levels to humans and animals due to tannery effluents, but there is insufficient information about heavy metals pollution and distribution by tanneries. The distribution and sources of heavy metals in soils of Challawa industrial estate area were evaluated using multivariate statistical analysis after determining metals concentrations by atomic absorption spectroscopy. The results of the Principal Component Analysis and Hierarchical Cluster Analysis suggested that variation in heavy metals concentrations are largely related to tannery operations. The Linear Discriminant Analysis revealed that soils around the tanneries and dumpsites are having high contents of Cr, Pb, and Zn. The metal concentrations showed significant difference (P < 0.05) between tannery and control soil samples. This confirmed the contamination of soils with toxic heavy metals at specific sites of the tanneries, and indicated the need to monitor and remediate to safeguard the environment.

ABSTRACT: This study investigated the hydrogeochemical characteristics and microbiological pollution of groundwater in Wadi Al Bih limestone aquifer, Ras Al Khaimah area, northern United Arab Emirates (UAE). Results indicate that the decrease of groundwater exploitation in Wadi Al Bih basin from 58 million cubic meter (MCM) during the period 1991-1995 to 22 MCM during the period 2011-2015, has increased groundwater storage, raised hydraulic heads by 1 m in Al Burayrat area and 16 m near Wadi Al Bih main dam, and decreased the average groundwater salinity by 30% in Wadi Al Bih well field and 45% in Al Burayrat well field. Results of chemical analyses showed noticeable fluctuations in groundwater temperature, EC, and TDS contents, rather than concentrations of all ions. The November 2014 and June 2015 isosalinity contour maps indicate that the groundwater salinity increases from east to west, in the direction of groundwater flow. The groundwater in the eastern part of Wadi Al Bih is good for domestic purposes and irrigation. However, the water hardness is high because the aquifer is predominantly composed of limestone. Wadi Al Bih limestone aquifer is highly sensitive to urban and agricultural activities, and several well were recorded to have Coliform bacteria in Wadi Al Bih and Al Burayrat areas

Since the recent development of UAVs(Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) and digital sensors technology has enabled the acquisition of high-resolution image data, it is considered that the image data of riverside can be analysed. Therefore, this study analyses the applicability of remote sensing techniques through image analysis in river systems and habitats. The target stream in this study was the Cheongmi stream and the applicability of the river environmental evaluation technique was analysed through image analysis. The satellite images used for the analysis of river topography and environments were compared with the aerial images taken by a micro UAV), and the river environmental evaluation was carried out with the field research at the same time. The data acquisition range and application limit by river environmental evaluation technique proposed previously were evaluated, and as a result, it was found that it was possible to draw various evaluation parameters using a drone that could take an image at a low altitude in comparison to satellite images.

Two studied stations were involved in this study included Sharq–Dijla and Al-Karamah water purification stations. Water samples collected from four sites with three replicates for each sample of each site of the river and the station: before, after, inside the stations and at the pipe. The study started in October 2012 to September 2013. Results showed that the minimum level of water temperature was 11oC during (December-January) at Sharq –Dijla.While the maximum level was 30oC during (August-September) at both AL-Karamah and Sharq –Dijla stations. pH results revealed that the highest level of pH was 8.63 during (October-November) at AL-Karamah station followed by the lowest level was 6.73 in(February- March) at Sharq –Dijla station. The highest level of EC was 1068 µS/cm during (April-May) at Sharq-Dijla station, while the lowest level was 693 µS/cm during (August- September) at the same station. The results of DO showed that the highest level was 11.51 ppm during (December-January) at Sharq- Dijla station, while the lowest level was 4.25 ppm during (August- September) at AL- Karamah station.The BOD results recorded the highest level of BOD5 was 4.49 ppm during (August- September), and the lowest level was 0.67 ppm during (December-January) both results at Sharq-Dijla station. Total hardness showed that the highest level was about 404 ppm during (December-January) at AL-Karamah station, and the lowest level 162 ppm during (August- September) at the same station. Free chlorine measurements found with Iraqi limits and WHO for these two stations. The highest value of Iron concentration was 3.30ppm in (December-January) at Al-Karamah station, while the lowest value was1.63ppm in (August- September) at Sharq–Dijla station.
