The legacy of the CIO
Audit. Tax. Consulting. Financial Advisory.

the Deloitte Global CIO
Survey. More than 1,200
CIOs participated from 43

•	The sample represents a
wide spread of industries
from companies of all sizes
in Switzerland. This gives us
confidence that our sample
can be used as a proxy
for the Swiss corporate
IT landscape.
•	The findings correlate
strongly with the global
responses giving us
further confidence in the
representative nature of
the Swiss sample.
…but cost reduction
remains a major objective
Even as IT budgets have
risen, cost reduction is
the most frequently cited
business priority for Swiss
CIOs: 54% call it a priority in
Switzerland – greater than
anywhere else in the world.
2
IT budgets of Swiss
companies have grown
significantly over the last two
years, with 53% of Swiss CIOs
reporting a budget increase –
higher than in 2013 and 2014
and higher than the global
average for 2015...

CIOs face competing priorities
The Swiss CIO faces competing
priorities: assisting in cost
reduction in addition to
playing a key role in delivering
innovation and digital
technology.
3
Focus on operations…
Swiss CIOs spend a
greater amount of their
time (37%) on managing
IT operations than on
any other activity.
…but aspire to strategy
Their current focus may be
on operations, but Swiss
CIOs prefer to spend more
time engaged in strategy
development (27% rather
than 18% of time currently).
73% of our respondents see
their ideal role as a co-leader
of business strategy.
4
5
Imperfect reporting
relationships
62% of CIOs want to
report directly to the CEO,
but only 31% actually do.
4% report to the CFO,
but only 5% of CIOs see
this as the ideal reporting
relationship.
Establishing trusted
relationships
Swiss CIOs establish trusted
relationships by being:
1. transparent about what
	 they do
2. good communicators
3. honest and upfront
6
7
Trusted
Operator
Business
Co-creator
Change
Instigator
Three patterns of the CIO:
The survey results reveal three patterns of the CIO:
Trusted Operators, Change Instigators and Business
Co-creators. Most Swiss CIOs today fall into the
‘Trusted Operator’ category. Consistent with the
picture of Swiss CIOs as a group being more
operationally focused than their international peers.
