3. INTRODUCTION
Biometric system is an automated method of recognizing a
person based on his physiological and behavioral characteristic. It
is a system that verifies human identities through characteristics
such as fingerprints, faces, retinal pattern, palm, etc. This
technology is being used in several applications such as access
control for high security, credit card usage verification, and
employee identification.
4. Problem Statement
Traditional staffâs attendance in AIT is taken manually, done by
using attendance sheets given to an officer, in charge of monitoring
the staffsâ work place attendance and the time they spent on their
particular assignments. Unfortunately this practice is revealed to be
ineffective as personnel often find their way around it.
Resulting in an inaccurately and efficient attendance record
keeping from the AIT administration, lectures and other staffs are
often paid for time they did not spend on duty. Resulting in bad
professional behavior and financial lost.
5. Background of the study
Biometric system is a technique that
has been used for many years;
The use of this system to monitor the
attendance of staffs has revealed itself
very successful as it increases the staff
accountability and boosts the workers
toward good professional conduct.
6. It is being now in numerous field
including financial, medical, commerce
and customer application as a secure
and effective authentication method.
Fingerprint authentication has been
used for long time and bears more
advantages than other biometrics. It
has been verified through various
applications in 1924. three basic patterns of finger

DESIGN CONCEPT
The experimental design of the biometric fingerprint
system is developed using PROTEUS software before
proceeding to the construction and analysis ,the design
and the component selection are validated by
simulating the different sections of the design
8. âą Fingerprint module
A fingerprint module is an electronic
device used to capture a digital image of
the fingerprint pattern. The captured image
is called a live scan. This live scan is digitally
processed to create a biometric template (a
collection of extracted features) which is
stored and used for matching.

DESCRIPTION OF COMPONENTS
9. Liquid crystal display is used for
displaying the messages. It is in 4bit
mode and it is connected to the
microcontroller.

10. microcontroller
It has 14 digital input/output pins (of
which 6 can be used as PWM outputs),
6 analog inputs, a 16 MHz ceramic
resonator and USB connection. It
contains everything needed to support
the microcontroller.
BUZZER
The Piezo Audio Transducer that
generate a range of audible tones and
frequencies when energised with 5
Volts is used to generate a sound after
the finger print scanning as taking place.

11. LEDS are semiconductor light that are used to identify whether the
print has been pressed. Two types of LEDS are used in this project.
The green LED is used to indicate that the print has been saved
while the red LED is used to indicate that the print has not been
saved.
VOLTAGE REGULATOR
In order to regulate the supply voltage and avoid excessive voltage
theLM7805 voltage regulator from the LM78XX series is used to
limit the supply voltage at 5V for the microcontroller and the rest
of the system.

13. Summary of study
The study presents the design and simulation of biometric
fingerprint system of the Accra Institute of Technology. The
study presents a description of the components and equipment
required to construct an effective biometric system for the AIT
attendance. The design system was modeled and simulated
using PROTEUS 8 PROFESSIONAL. After testing the complete
project, the system reveals itself to be working correctly.
14. When a person presses the finger on finger on fingerprint
scanner, it gives high and low logic digital signal to the
microcontroller after pressing switch 2. This controller is
programmed in such a way that it stores the digital data.
When the switch 1 is pressed again, it ask for fingerprint
scanning if this data matches with the previously stored
fingerprint data, it generates an output signal that displays the
information on the LCD display.
15. It is also possible to delete the scanned finger by pressing the
switch3 and also, if any unauthorized person tries to access the
device, this system gives an alarm.
16. CONCLUSION
This project work dealt with the design and simulation of a
biometric fingerprint system that can be used to eliminate
absenteeism and impersonation. The developed system allows
the user to have his/her authentication password in order to
eliminates time-related disputes and maintain good attendance
records as a result.
17. From the design and simulation of the system presented, the
system is able to insure the account department an effective
tracking of the time the staffs are supposed to be paid and to
monitor the reporting time and the clocking out of the
permanent staff. These objectives of this thesis were successfully
attained. It eliminates paper for the attendance recording and
facilitates the creation of fair payrolls.
18. RECOMMENDATION
âą The system can be connected to a wireless structure that will
alert the number and the names of staff and lectures available
on campus a particular day at a particular time.
âą The system can also be connected to C3000z adapter biometric
fingerprint that can register time and attendance system for the
AIT campuses through a mobile phone.
