The enormous challenges at the beginning of the 21st Century by the unprecedented development in science and technology- especially the information technology- put an ever-increasing pressure on education. Preserving the traditional human values -culture, social life, family – without slowing down the rate of innovation is an enormous challenge which needs an upgraded education from grammar school to academic level.
The paper presents a few critical questions faced by the education in the present “transitory” period aiming to try to find an equilibrium between the expectations of multinational giants and the general public. Orientation, politics in applied research and connection to the industrial application especially in advanced SME-s are briefly outlined. A few ideas on possible solutions are summarized.

I have a dream,,,,,,,,,
… but this time it is a nightmare…..!
I can’t forget the “conclusions” of the famous book of Aldous Huxley : “Brave new world”
written almost a century ago…..or the philosophy of “catastrophe planes” in the development of
civilization on our Earth…or should I go back to Madách ”Az Ember Tragédiája”….
…. are there any other chances ?
…. I do believe, THERE ARE !!!
And the tool we have to change the nightmare into a really “brave new world” is
EDUCATION !! …at any level and any time…!

A few facts at the beginning of the 21st century
• Unprecedented development of science in almost every known field.
- the sophisticated investigation possibilities, the level and speed of
communication and the basic knowledge of the physical world all
contribute to an ascending spiral of development
• Paradox:
Earlier : research and development was oriented towards solving a
specific problem faced in any area of human activities.
Today – it seems – the research and development, has little to do
with a specific problem or need, it is oriented on a more general
level exploiting the possibilities of the existing knowledge and of
those offered by investigation techniques.
4. During the history of mankind it was a strong and determining interaction between
the development of technology and that of the society.
- The time shift between the two depended first of all on the possibilities of
communication and its speed. The easier and faster the communication, the faster
the reaction is and the cycle is repeated always on a bigger scale and wider area.
- After a rather long period of “accumulation” the 20s century accelerated this spiral
and all the signs of the development at the beginning of the 21st century show a
further acceleration.
- The speed of communication spectacularly increased at the beginning of the 21st
century, however the time gap seems to increase alarmingly

5. Einstein’s theories on relativity, quantum mechanics, a deeper understanding of
the atomic world and the discovery and development of nuclear power generation
in fact was another technical revolution…
…. completed in the last decades of the century by rapid development of
information technology…
leading to the fourth industrial revolution
Consequence:
• the balance between the different categories of society suffered -and further
suffers- drastic changes and apparently these changes are not balanced by a logical
and well thought strategy to accept the news.
• In Europe the general level of social “well being” increased considerably in the
20ies century but the cultural level did not follow the same pattern. (This is even
more striking in the USA.)
The 20th century was the century of physics.

The state of art:
what is missing :
• general knowledge on fundamental disciplines, especially physics and chemistry
• the logical connection between theory and practice
• the logical relationship between “what…why ...how.. when “ the time-gap between
innovative ideas and industrial application is alarmingly increasing
• interdisciplinarity in both the graduate- and post graduate education is almost
disappearing (too many, too specific disciplines and lack of a more general
approach to the science and applied science.)
7. what we see and experience:
• Strong orientation towards informatics, without the knowledge to
select and prioritize - tendency to accepting artificial statistics as a
gospel
• A firm belief, that the computer (internet etc) can solve anything
and thus there is no need to learn specific elements or nuances
within each discipline
• An ever increasing possibility to manipulate the general public
perception and opinion by the advanced systems of mass
communication (Facebook, movies etc.)
The state of art:

- Social values developed by the humans over centuries or
millennia seem to loose public interest and a perception of “old
style” or …. appear more and more frequently and on a larger
scale
- An over helming part of the society is trained for rather narrow
activity field, to satisfy the need of industrial giants, respectively
to become more and more “robot-like“ which is - later- easy to
be replaced by robots.
….. Let’s put the question what makes the difference between
human and robot no matter how perfect or sophisticated it is…?...
… it is the free will to take individual decisions based on human
culture including everything from music to art and literature ..
May we accept this culture should be lost ?....... I do not believe!
Young generation is more and more attempted to confuse artificial
intelligence , virtual world with the real one, loosing the sense of
priorities and the scale of values.

..slowly we forget handwriting, basic mathematics, basic elements of
physics and chemistry, not even pointing to history ….everything may be
found on the net or just enough to play on our electronic devices with
more and more advanced software….
What I see as “nightmare of the brave new world” is the danger of
becoming robots easy to manipulate in any area of our existence.
What may we observe as a general problem: an increasing gap
between the results of advanced research in science and that how
are these results translated and transferred to the general public.
.. the more and more critical problem….
10. ….Let’s try to put a few basic questions…. even if they are
philosophical.. What is life ?....and what is social life?
…..an answer ….. Aristoteles (384-322 .BC)
• the mystery of existence
• something which appears, develops and
reproduces itself

What makes us different from the other creatures
of the nature?
What are the real values of human life ?
I think…
- to have dreams and try to materialize these dreams
- to be aware of the challenges and face these challenges
- to have targets in the life and fight to reach these targets
“ ….to reach the unreachable star…..” (Man of La Mancha)

How should we approach the future?
- to put a brake, to slow down the development? …. Certainly NOT
The solution is to reduce the time-gap between scientific- technical development and social
perception, respectively its reflection in human society
What is the tool we have to achieve the above goal ? …. EDUCATION
Education from the grammar school to academic level
… the basic philosophy: no castle or fortress may be raised without a sound basement !
12. CONFERENCE ON BUSINESS UNIVERSITY COOPERATION IN CENTRAL EUROPE (CUBCCE) 4.December 2017
• Education has to give the solid basic knowledge which is
eternal…. it has to be completed but its basics may not be
neglected or forgotten
• Education has to give a sight on the World –even if only
schematic- on “the whole” and the “part” may only be
complementary at any level when orientation or dedication
for a given field is outlined.
• Education has to serve the general interest of the global
society and not a selected interest of any group of the
society
13. CONFERENCE ON BUSINESS UNIVERSITY COOPERATION IN CENTRAL EUROPE (CUBCCE) 4.December 2017
• The education has to start from the very first
moment, respectively children have to get the
“guide” for their future role in the society.
• Elements of basic knowledge have to be “implanted”
starting from kinder- garden level
• Education has to find a suitable communication and
level for each age group but never missing the real
aim and target
14. CONFERENCE ON BUSINESS UNIVERSITY COOPERATION IN CENTRAL EUROPE (CUBCCE) 4.December 2017
Education at university level
• Too many, too specific disciplines and qualifications , lack of
a more general approach to the science and applied science
and especially to engineering
Should I criticize the Bologna system ? Definitely yes!
• At the basic level we produce “semi products” more or less
at technician level and the master degree should complete
their knowledge but only a limited number follow this
second level. ( According statistical data some 30% of
students will graduate at masters level)

Summary …or…what is needed:
- To review the whole system of education from its basics to the academic level
- A teaching program oriented towards a more general basic knowledge
- The teaching must include elements of knowledge on data processing at a level
corresponding to the age. Children have to be made aware informatics is only a
tool, even if its possibilities and importance is over helming
- The philosophy and program of education has to be shaped by scientists,
specialists and not by politicians, as the later mostly consider short time
options and targets.
- The education has to give elements of understanding the new world and its
real place in social life, priorities and criteria for selective judgement
