- According to predictions reported in the Economist in 2013, the market will grow from 2B up to 10B USD by 2020. Represents a similar CAGR of 30% and will be up to 2% of the world free lance work
- What we understood anecdotally is true. There is wide-ranging inconsistencies between the regulations among the 14 countries – indeed, we concluded the situation requires a concerted effort toward harmonizing the laws.We identified that there are clear “Leaders” and “Followers.”Analysing the data shows some common differences between the leaders and followers. While these factors may not be uniform across all of the countries in the group, they provide some perspective on how the relative rankings were developed.These are the characteristics we saw generally distinguishing Leaders from Followers. We can take this as the touchstones toward a regional policy framework.I’d encourage you to focus on this when you read the report.Characteristics of the LEADERS:Clear Data Protection LawsClear what laws affect cloudReasonable cross border controlsTechnology neutralNo filtering or censoring requirementsLeaders and Followers: the countries appear to be grouped into two broad categories based on their overall score.Countries that substantially align with the Ideal.Countries that are inconsistent with international norms, have no regulations (creating uncertainty) or have laws that are otherwise significantly inconsistent with the Ideal.Data Safety: Even in the leading countries, the lowest scores -- How governments are authorized to access data; censorship and liability for content are still challenges.International Consistency and Cross-Border Movement are the biggest differentiators between Leaders and Followers.Data Safety, How governments are authorized to access data; censorship and liability for content are still challenges --even for the leading countries, this is the lowest score. We all are aware of the recent events around this and we think Asia’s leaders can lead in this area too – setting the standards for the region and possibly globally. The biggest thing the Followers have to work on is International Consistency and Cross-Border Movement. These two areas are the biggest differentiators between Leaders and Followers.
