kingdom of God

in spirit, for theirs is the
kingdom of heaven
10 “Blessed are those who
have been persecuted
for the sake of
righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom
of heaven.
8. BLESSED ARE THE
POOR IN SPIRIT...
Ptōchos in Greek: “the
destitute”, “like beggar”,

provider”

esteem : he who is
humble and
contrite in spirit and

MEEKNESS EXEMPLIFIED
… Christ Jesus, who
being in the very
nature God did not
consider equality
with God something
to be grasped
(Phil.2:5,6)
Jesus (Mt. 11:29,
1 Pet.2:21-23)
Moses (Num.12
:1-10)
Apostles (1

the father had put
all things under His

suffered, he made no
threats. Instead, he
entrusted himself to
him who judges
justly. (1 Pet. 2: 23)

forgive them, for they
do not know what they
are doing.“… (Luke

with Him, if we
disown Him, He
will also disown
us” 2 Tim.2:12
24. …FOR THEY WILL
INHERIT THE EARTH
By being in
Jesus, the meek:
• Receive the
allotted portion
• Share in His
inheritance
becoming
co-heirs with
Jesus
25. DISCUSSION
1. What might be some connections or
disconnects between spiritual poverty and
physical poverty?
2. How does humility fit in a society that
encourages an attitude of “you are number
one,” prove you are better than everyone, work
your way to the top, etc.?
3. How does meekness open a person to divine
direction? How does meekness manifest itself
in your life?
Can also be understood as be-attitudes (call to be of the attitude..) Spiritual well-being, deep joy of the soul.
The Beatitudes - not worldly notion of ‘blessedness’ and ‘happiness’.
Contradictory to carnal mind
“… foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” (1 Co. 1:18)
Covered in 2nd Year of Jesus’ teaching ministry
beatitudes of the kingdom
Ptōchos - Greek word which means “the destitute”, “like beggar”, “dependent on a provider”,
Implying neither material poverty, nor poor-spirited, rather….
….realizing one’s spiritual destitution without God
….realizing constant dependence on God
It is a rare and the strongest Greek word for mourning Implying neither material loss nor rejection, not even the loss of a dear one, rather….
….the lament over one’s own sinfulness
Not only is there comfort in the sorrow and repentance, but He gives the strength to resist sin and the strength to stand against sin.
The result is comfort and strength.
… no English word can translate it - William Barclay’s Daily study Bible.
Praus: Greek word which means “mild”, “of “gentle spirit”, “humble”
Praeis: Greek word for meekness, (the most
untranslatable word in the NT – Barclay)
Implying neither weakness nor compromise,
not even practiced self control, rather…
…strength under control with higher objectives
It is not about earning it, its about receiving the allotted portion…
because of the relationship one enjoys with Him who bestows the inheritance
By being in Jesus the meek share in His inheritance…
…becoming co-heirs with Jesus
