B202: Innovative services to
engage users
2. Team
• Software developers
and librarians in one
• Our goal is solve
today’s problems,
instead of wandering
about past and future
• Just moved to the UK
• Worked for the
National Library of
Hungary
3. Our portal
• „Library of libraries”: info,
events, central virtual
catalog and user focused
services
• Contact info, catalogs,
ebooks, book summaries,
patrons, official statistics...
• Shelves for users, lendings
from multiple libraries due
date notifications
• Games, LIS wiki, survey
editor
4. More about it
• Staff updates info on their
own library, add events
and news with no IT
• Relevant information is
shown to visitors using
geotargeting and
favourites set
• We work hard on getting
more visible in Google
• We provide useful and
trendy services, that
libraries offer to their
patrons
5.
6.
7.
8. We can
• Develop user focused
features requested by
libraries
• Things that one library
can’t do on it’s own
• Things that involves
working with ILS
vendors
• Implement innovative
new ideas
9. Together
• It is more efficient to work
toghether on the net: better
visibility, more weight
• Provide a single entry point into
the library system - library.uk?
• Planned cooperation with UK
library and reading advocacy
groups
• www.londonlibraries.org,
www.peoplesnetwork.gov.uk,
• whichbook.net is a good
example: great service but not
connected
10. You can...
• Have a professional user
oriented online presence
with no IT staff
• Home page with library-
specific features, news
• Look cool and up to date in
front of your patrons
• Focus on getting more
people to read, get around
on the net, find a job, etc.
11. Sustainability
• Information on all libraries
from the beginning
• Subscription fee for more
personalisation, interaction
with your own patrons
• Shared cost of continous
development
• Sustainable financial model
with 100+ libraries
12. Help us
• To get to know UK’s library
system, projects,
organisations, ...
• Cooperate with us on your
ideas, projects for the
benefit of all libraries
• This presentation is a test to
see if there is a need for us

Yesterday there was a lot of talk about librarians able to take on other jobs, but much less about the need for other professions in libraries to keep up with the changing and expanding role.
As libraries a bit behind todays’ technology – this is a big leap forward indeeed.
No: IP, cloud, TCP, ... IT slang
Same feeling as 5 years ago in Hungary, when I jumped into the library community: there is so much to know, so much to help
Let me know if I missed something
Same as in Hungary 5 years ago, when entering library-land: so much to know, so much to help

The NHS site is somewhat similar – all surgeries are there, and they can update their information, put up their photos, and link to their sites. Which look ugly most of the time.
Cooperated with 10 different ILS vendors and products. We can even provide status information on books. They could not refuse...
Bookcrossing game adapted to Hungary

Can be used as a hompage for any library, under it’s own address: library.rbkc.gov.uk
Most small libraries do not have websites, are part of their council’s also crappy site – and are in constant need for a real IT guy, not someone’s son
Having a Page on Facebook or a channel on Twitter is nice, but see how commertial companies use them. Interactive games, in place services, brilliant campaigns (IKEA)
in Hungary we’re on the first page for many book or library related queries

Your modern IT guy will say: use Facebook, Wordpress, Drupal, RDA, open source software
OK, but they are too generic, and even for most of them you need a dedicated IT staff.
