                        Translation
              ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROGRAMME

Researcher‟s name: Wendy Valeria Escalante Chan

             Student‟s registration number: 08-09468

Working Title: English-Spanish translation of the article “Building
Resilience to Natural Disasters: A Framework For Private Sector
                          Engagement”

General Line of Research: Applied linguistics

           Nature of Research: Documentary research

               Supervisor: Alessio Zanier Visintin
At some time in our lives we have
experienced that kind of desperation
when someone, who does not speak the
same language as ours, tries to
communicate with us, but we cannot
understand him/her because of obvious
reasons. Some years ago we did not
care about that, but nowadays, as
English is a universal language that is
spoken all over the world, we feel the
necessity to speak it and understand it
According to Douglas Robinson in his book
“Becoming a translator, second edition”

       “Translation is different things for
different groups of people. For people
who are not translators, it is primarily a text;
for people who are, it is primarily an
activity. Or, as Anthony Pym (1993: 131,
149-50) puts it, translation is a text from the
       perspective of "external knowledge,"
but an activity (aiming at the production
of a text) from the perspective of "internal
       knowledge."
Relevance of the article to be translated

The projects proposed by the World Economic
Forum are relevant because they have thought
of the economy of companies, they are
interested in the economy and that is why they
are designing these projects in order to help a
little in the economy of the people and
companies.

The translation of the article is important
because e live in a hurricane zone and I think
that this information about the projects could
help us in the economy of the city if they are
Objective

To apply the techniques and
methods that I have learnt in all
my translation courses, and
show that I can make an
accurately use of the
information I have until now in
order to write a successful
translation that readers can
understand easily.
The translation of this article involves a Indirect
detailed process which includes the translation
use of the different translation
techniques , I will use those of Jean-
Paul Vinay and Jean Dalbernet
(Canadian school of translation, 1958). Transpositio
                         •Literal n
                         translation Modulation
                         •Linguistic Equivalence
     Direct
                         borrowing Adaptation
  translation
                         •Calque Addition or
                                             amplification
                                             Reduction or
                                             omission
In order to write a succesful
translation I have to look for
other sources that can take
me to a clearer
understanding of words i
know i will have problems
with. I have to make use of
the tools that are available
on the internet and in the
library. The important point
