INNOVATION

      This technology performs a spiraling block-matching search on test image, starting at spot center
      coordinates from reference image, to find a match on test image based on Pearson’s coefficient.

      This approach, combined with other known methods, has not been disclosed by prior art.

DEVELOPMENT

      Stage:                        Advanced development

                                    The application lacks advanced statistical functionality, which will be
                                    developed by June 2011.

      Status:                       The application has been developed in collaboration with the Biomedical
                                    Research Institute (INIBIC) at the University of A Coruña Hospital
                                    Complex (CHUAC). The medical team was led by Dr. Francisco Blanco,
                                    Scientific Director.

                                    The application has been tested using images provided by G.-Z. Yang,
                                    Royal Society/Wolfson MIC Laboratory, Department of Computing,
                                    Imperial College, London.

                                    Further testing has been carried out versus current market applications,
                                    mainly Decodon’s Delta2D.

APPLICATIONS

      This technology is designed to be applied in the field of biomedicine, be it:




                            Clinical research, in order to determine which and how proteins are associated
                            to specific diseases.




                            Clinical diagnostics, in order to compare a master image to images from actual
                            patients and diagnose the presence of a specific disease.

      SERGAS       (8%)     and      the      CHUAC      Foundation        (8%).
      Commercialization is managed by the University of A Coruña.

LAB INFORMATION
      This technology has been developed by the RNASA Lab at the University of A Coruña, Spain.



      RNASA stands for “Artificial Neural Networks and Adaptive Systems”. The lab was founded in 1989
      by Alejandro Pazos, PhD in Medicine and PhD in Computer Science, who leads more than fifty (50)
      researchers, including two (2) Full Professors an three (3) Senior Lecturers.



      The RNASA team has led twenty (20) doctoral thesis, published close to one hundred (100) papers
      and filed three (3) working patents over the last twenty years.

TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION
      In the simple block-matching approach, the whole images (both reference and test) are divided in a
      grid of blocks. Each block is compared using different similarity measures.

      The developed technology by RNASA Lab works as follows:

              (a) First, only a subset of blocks is selected in the reference image, one block for each protein
             selected;

              (b) LM fitting uses Gaussian function to model pixel intensity (i.e. grey level) on each block of
             the reference image to establish the accurate center of protein spot: a wave search is used
             (uses pixel intensity to identify perimeter/radii of protein spot) on reference image to
             establish estimated center of spot coordinates. The initial coordinates represent its centre.
             The radius is increased until it reaches certain threshold and contains the protein center. The
             minimum intensity point in the delimited area is used as the provisional centre for each
             iteration.

              (c) The coordinate of the central position of each block in the reference image is the central
             search position in the test image.

              (d) spiraling block-matching search is performed on test image, starting at spot center
             coordinates from reference image, to find a match on test image based on Pearson’s
             coefficient.

INNOVATION This technology performs a spiraling block-matching search on test image, starting at spot center coordinates from reference image, to find a match on test image based on Pearson’s coefficient. This approach, combined with other known methods, has not been disclosed by prior art.   • 4. DEVELOPMENT Stage:  Advanced development The application lacks advanced statistical functionality, which will be developed by June 2011. Status: The application has been developed in collaboration with the Biomedical Research Institute (INIBIC) at the University of A Coruña Hospital Complex (CHUAC). The medical team was led by Dr. Francisco Blanco, Scientific Director. The application has been tested using images provided by G.-Z. Yang, Royal Society/Wolfson MIC Laboratory, Department of Computing, Imperial College, London. Further testing has been carried out versus current market applications, mainly Decodon’s Delta2D.   • 5. APPLICATIONS This technology is designed to be applied in the field of biomedicine, be it: Clinical research, in order to determine which and how proteins are associated to specific diseases. Clinical diagnostics, in order to compare a master image to images from actual patients and diagnose the presence of a specific disease.   • 7. LAB INFORMATION This technology has been developed by the RNASA Lab at the University of A Coruña, Spain. RNASA stands for “Artificial Neural Networks and Adaptive Systems”. The lab was founded in 1989 by Alejandro Pazos, PhD in Medicine and PhD in Computer Science, who leads more than fifty (50) researchers, including two (2) Full Professors an three (3) Senior Lecturers. The RNASA team has led twenty (20) doctoral thesis, published close to one hundred (100) papers and filed three (3) working patents over the last twenty years.   • 8. TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION In the simple block-matching approach, the whole images (both reference and test) are divided in a grid of blocks. Each block is compared using different similarity measures. The developed technology by RNASA Lab works as follows:  (a) First, only a subset of blocks is selected in the reference image, one block for each protein selected;  (b) LM fitting uses Gaussian function to model pixel intensity (i.e. grey level) on each block of the reference image to establish the accurate center of protein spot: a wave search is used (uses pixel intensity to identify perimeter/radii of protein spot) on reference image to establish estimated center of spot coordinates. The initial coordinates represent its centre. The radius is increased until it reaches certain threshold and contains the protein center. The minimum intensity point in the delimited area is used as the provisional centre for each iteration.  (c) The coordinate of the central position of each block in the reference image is the central search position in the test image.  (d) spiraling block-matching search is performed on test image, starting at spot center coordinates from reference image, to find a match on test image based on Pearson’s coefficient.
