- Halong Bay is perhaps the most iconic attraction in Vietnam. The name, Halong, in translation means “dragon descending.” Local legends say that the spectacular limestone peaks of the Bay were created by a great dragon who flew from the mountains towards the coast. The dragon’s tail bashed against the earth creating valleys and crevasses. Then the great dragon plunged into the ocean, submerging the entire area in seawater, except for the peaks that are visible today.
