 The word ‘Gospel’ is from middle English
‘Godspell’, which means message of Christ or
simply Good news.
 The term "good news" refers to the story of
Jesus Christ's birth, death, and resurrection.
 Luke is first mentioned in the letters of Paul
as the latter’s “coworker” and as the
“beloved physician.”Paul is the author of
most books in the Holy Bible(13).
 The literary style of Luke’s writings and the
range of his vocabulary mark him as an
educated man. He was a physician.
 Messiah-
the promised deliverer or the leader of the
Jewish nation prophesied in the Hebrew
Bible.
 Prophet-A Prophet is a divinely ordained
messenger that serves as a leader in the
religion he is Prophet over. When a Prophet
appears, it means something significant
happened, is happening or about to happen.
 Original Sin:the tendency to evil supposedly
innate in all human beings, held to be
inherited from Adam in consequence of the
Fall.
 Baptism-From the root word ‘Baptiso’ which
means immersion. Baptism by water
(referred to as “John's baptism,” for John
the Baptist) is a ceremonial ritual signifying
cleansing of the body and mind to become
the Lord's temple. It signifies accepting Jesus
Christ as his/her God.
 Trinity:the three persons of the Christian
Godhead; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
 Sabbath:a day of religious observance and
abstinence from work, kept by Jews from
Friday evening to Saturday evening, and by
most Christians on Sunday.
 Parable:a simple story used to illustrate a
moral or spiritual lesson, as told by Jesus in
the Gospels.

pierce her soul.

tomb.
 Barabbas. Is released by Pilate.
 Theophilus. This "God-lover" has two books
addressed to him.

Caiaphas-Rends his garments
during the trial of Jesus
Zacchaeus-Short man who gives
away half his possessions
Angel Gabriel- Tells Zacharias
that he is going to be mute for
his unbelief.
 Roman Centurion- Calls Jesus the son of God
directly after Jesus dies
 Mary- Searches for Jesus and finds him in the
temple
 John the Baptist- The man who baptized
Jesus
 With 80 verses, it is one of the longest
chapters in the New Testament.
 First chapter describes the events leading up
to the birth of Jesus.
 Angelic visitation to Zechariah.
 He became mute as he didn’t believe the
angel.
 Angel appears to Mary speaking of Jesus’
birth.
 An angel appears to shepherds guarding their
sheep nearby, telling them the joyful news
that a savior has been born that night.
 They find Mary, Joseph and the baby in the
stable, and they tell everyone what the angel
had said to them. The baby is named Jesus,
as instructed by the angel before His
conception.
 John the Baptist, is preaching and baptizing
people in the country. He urges them to “bring
forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance.” He
also tells them to give alms to the poor and not
tax people more than they owe. John also tells
the soldiers to “do no more violence, accuse no
man falsely and be content with your wages.”
 When Jesus himself comes to be baptized by
John, This happens, “the Holy Ghost descended
in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a
voice came from heaven which said ‘Thou art my
beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.'”
 Temptation of Jesus:He was told by the devil
to turn the stone into bread for food and to
command kingdoms.
 Jesus later returns to His hometown. He
enters the temple on the Sabbath day and
reads from the book of Isaiah. He states that
He is the chosen one. He angers His listeners
by saying that a prophet is not accepted in
His home country.
 Jesus delivers a man suffering from evil
spirits. He also heals Peter’s mother in law.
 Jesus instructs Peter to lower the nets into the
water. Almost immediately the nets were filled
with fish.
 Simon Peter, James and John saw the
supernatural in this circumstance. They left their
nets and followed Jesus.
 Next, Jesus heals a leper. Friends of a paralyzed
man lower him down the roof because of the
crowd.
 And when he saw their faith, he said unto him,
Man, thy sins are forgiven to thee.
 The Scribes and Pharisees accuse Jesus of
blasphemy.
 Jesus’ disciples worked on Sabbath. The
Pharisees found fault. Jesus says he is lord
even of Sabbath. Jesus healed a man on
Sabbath. Again, they find fault. Jesus replies
that it is lawful to good on any day.
 He calls twelve people as his disciples:Simon,
Andrew, James, John, Barthalomew, Mathew,
Thomas, James, Judas, Judas Iscariot,Simon,
Philip.
 Next, he delivers the sermon on the mount.
 A Roman Centurion requests Jesus to heal his
servant. He tells Jesus not to come to his house
as his house is not worthy of Jesus coming there,
Jesus marvels that he has not seen such faith in
all Israel.
 Jesus then raises to life a widow’s dead son.
 All people glorify God on account of Jesus’
miracles.
 John’s disciples ask Jesus if He is the One
prophesied in the Torah. Jesus tells of all the
miracles.
 Jesus tells the parable of two creditors. Jesus
honors the woman who wipes his feet with her
hair.
 Jesus tells the parable of the sower, thereby,
indicating the importance of the word of God.
 Next, Jesus’ mother and brethren come to see him.
Jesus says that his mother and brethren are those
who hear and do as per the word of the Lord.
 There arises a storm. Jesus rebukes the wind. It
stops raging. The disciples marvel.
 Jesus delivers a man possessed by many demons.
 A woman with the issue of blood touches the edge
of Jesus’ garment and is healed of her problem.
 Jairus’ daughter is raised to life.
 Jesus preaches. He asks his disciples to give the
people food. They only have 5 loaves of bread
and 2 fishes. Jesus blesses them and is able to
feed thousands of people.
 Jesus asks who the people say he is. They reply
that some say he is a prophet, while others think
he is Elijah. But Peter says that he is the Christ.
 Jesus makes a prediction that the Son of Man
must suffer. Likewise, his followers must take up
the cross.
 The disciples argue who among them is greater.
And Jesus tells them that a person wishing to be
great must humble himself like a child.
 Jesus says he sends his disciples as lambs
among wolves. He sends 70 disciples.Jesus
commands them to preach.
 He orders his disciples to go to people and
say that the kingdom of heaven is nigh unto
them.
 Jesus gives them authority over evil spirits
and then he says that he saw Satan fall from
heaven like lightning.
 He tells the story of the good Samaritan who
asks Him,”Who is my neighbour?”
 Jesus tells the Lord’s prayer.
 Jesus tells the famous Ask, and it shall be given
you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall
be opened unto you.
 This chapter also shows Jesus casting out a
demon. The nonbelievers begin to believe that
Jesus has the power to cast out demons because
he is working with Beelzebub of the demonic
world. Jesus speaks common sense as to how a
kingdom divided against itself will stand.
 The people also ask for a sign. He says only
Jonah’s sign will be given.
 His disciples are warned not to have any fear of
persecution from the hypocritical Pharisees. The only
fear that they should have is of the most high God,
for He has the power to send souls into the pits of
hell.
 Jesus continues to teach his disciples that those who
are willing to confess their love of the Lord will be
blessed. However, the opposite is also true in that
those that deny the power of the Lord will be
forgotten. In addition, blasphemy against the Holy
Spirit is considered an unforgivable sin.
 He tells of the story of a rich man that only cared
about his riches here on earth. Instead, he should
have been trying to store his treasures in heaven.
 Jesus commands the people to repent.
 Jesus tells the parable of the fig tree.
 Jesus heals a woman oppressed with a spirit of
infirmity for 18 years.
 The Pharisees accuse Him of healing on the
Sabbath day. Jesus tells that why do the
Pharisees loose their ox on Sabbath then.
 Jesus tells that the way to heaven is narrow
when compared to the way to hell which is
broad.
 He says that shall be last shall be first and they
that shall be first shall be last.
 He laments over Jerusalem with the famous
words, “O Jerusalem! O Jerusalem”
 Jesus heals a person with dropsy. The Pharisees
again accuse him of healing on the Sabbath.
 Jesus retorts by saying that all the people would
save an ox that falls in a pit even on the
Sabbath.
 Jesus advises that if you go for a marriage sit at
the last and the people call you to sit at the
first. He tells this as the feast was approaching
and how the Pharisees wanted to sit in seats of
high honor.
 Whoever exalteth himself shall be abased and
whoever abaseth himself shall be exalted.
 Jesus tells the story of a rich man with a feast
and how salvation may be received by the
gentiles first rather than the Jews.
 Jesus tells the story of the lost sheep- how
they will search for the one lost sheep
leaving the other ninety nine. The same is
true in heaven where there is more joy in the
repentance of one sinner than 99 righteous
men.
 Jesus tells the story of the prodigal son.
 The chapter begins with the story of a rich man and a
servant. The rich man receives complaints regarding
the servant and wants to fire him. In order to save his
job, he proceeds to write off some of his master’s
debtors’ debt. His master is pleased and commends
him. The moral is, you cannot serve two masters. You
cannot serve money as well as God. A definitive
choice has to be made.
 Jesus says if people are not loyal in worldly things,
how will they be entrusted with heavenly things.
 Jesus also warns people who justify themselves
before people but don’t care about their standing
with God.
 Jesus tells the story of a rich man and Lazarus.
 Jesus says It is impossible but that offences will
come: but woe unto him, through whom they
come! Jesus warns against hindering people
coming to Him.
 Jesus commands everyone to forgive his brother,
no matter what the offence is.
 Jesus says faith of the size of mustard seed is all
it takes.
 Jesus says not to expect praise for doing one’s
duty and teaches them to be humble.
 Jesus heals 10 lepers.
 Jesus talks about second coming and how it will
be like the days of Lot.
 Jesus tells the story of a hard hearted judge and says that
God will surely avenge his elect.Persistent prayer is all
that is required.
 Jesus is upset over people’s lack of faith.
 Jesus tells the story of a Pharisee and a Publican.
 Jesus says it is important to humble oneself like a little
child and asks disciples not to hinder children
 He says that everyone that exalteth himself shall be
abased and everyone that abase himself shall be exalteth
 Jesus asks a rich man to give all to the poor.
 Jesus says if anyone wants to follow Him, they must deny
their everything, including their families and says that
those who do thus will definitely get their reward.
 Jesus talks about his impending death.
 Jesus heals a blind man
 Jesus dines with a man named Zaccheus.
 Jesus tells a story.
 Jesus rides on an unused donkey. People
praise him saying,” Blessed is He that
cometh in the name of the Lord”.
 Jesus beats up people selling stuff and
profaning God’s temple. He lambasts them
making the Holy place a den of thieves.
 The chief priests, scribes and elders approached Jesus and asked
why He thinks He has the right to preach. Jesus answers them
with another question, asking them if they believed in John the
Baptist.
 Jesus then tells a parable about the evil tenants of a vineyard.
The vineyard owner had his property rented and went out on a
journey. He sent three servants to the vineyard to collect
produce from the tenants. The tenants beat up each servant and
shamefully sent them away. Finally, the owner sent his son who
he thought would be respected. However, the tenants killed the
son thinking that the inheritance will be theirs.
 “Does the Torah permit us to pay taxes” ask his detractors.
 Jesus says no marriage in heaven. Will be like angels. God is the
God of living and not the dead. Trinity of humans-mind, body and
soul. Soul is immortal.
 Davidic prophecy.
Poor widow’s two copper coins in the treasury.
Jesus says Jerusalem will be destroyed. Second
Coming. False Christs.
Great wars, epidemics, famines, earthquakes,
fearful sights, arrest and persecuted. Even
parents and brothers will betray.
Jerusalem will be surrounded by enemies.
The day will come like a snare.
 Satan enters Judas.
 Preparation for last supper.
 Communion-symbolism.
 Jesus says woe unto Judas, indirectly.
 Jesus predicts Peter’s denial.
 Prophecy:He was counted with transgressors.
 Jesus surrenders to father’s will.
 They come to arrest Jesus.A man’s ear is cut off.
Jesus heals the man. Jesus is arrested
nonetheless.
 Peter denies.
 Jesus is mocked.
 Jesus is accused falsely before Pilate.
 False accusations regarding taxes, about Jesus
claiming to be the Messiah. Jesus was from
Galilee. So he was under Herod’s jurisdiction.

says Pilate. He says he will flog and release him.
 They wanted to release Barabbas.
 Father forgive them.
 This is the king of the Jews.
 You will be with me in paradise.
 Jesus submits his spirit to the Father.
 Joseph for Arimathea asks for Jesus’ body.
 They discover that Jesus’ body is gone. They
see two angels. They inform that Christ is
resurrected.Reminds them of prophecies.
 Jesus walks with them. But they don’t
recognize. Jesus calls them foolish and
reminds them of prophecies of Messiah.
 Finally, they recognize Jesus and fear that it
is a ghost. But Jesus tells them to touch him
and see for themselves that he is real. Jesus
again reminds them of messianic prophecies.
 Jesus ascends to heaven.
