For nearly 20 years, educational institutions have been using learning management systems (LMS) to plan and implement teaching events and to facilitate and evaluate the learning progress of their students. A huge number of new educational tools and social media [1] led to the fact that LMSs were increasingly extended by their specialized functions and components. Often, these tools replace the LMS's own functions and the choice is made by LMS provider. At the same time, teachers are able to create their teaching / learning scenarios directly with specialized tools, without bundling through an LMS course.
The seminar contrasts the functional areas of LMS with the portfolio of specialized tools. It sketches an educational cloud as a mashup of specialized tools based on educational management and other basic software, points to first practical approaches and discusses the future role of LMS.
