3. NATIONAL INFECTIOUS DISEASE REGISTER
(NIDR)
Started in 1994-1995
Based on Law on Communicable diseases (1227/2016) and the
Communicable diseases act (146/2017)
Physicians notify on 22 generally hazardous communicable

4. PHYSICIANS NOTIFICATION
The personal identity code of the patient
– Patients name depending on disease classification
Infectious disease, the date of sampling
The manner, time and place of the infection
Any data on the given treatment
Doctor´s name, code and the hospital
Web notification application started in 2017, replaces paper forms
– disease specific questions
– physicians authenticate with Healthcare Personnel Smart Cards – the app
checks for valid physicians credentials

6. LABORATORY NOTIFICATION
Mostly electrically from the LIMS of larger labs
Smaller labs notify with web form (paper form being phased out)
The personal identity code of the patient
Microbial finding and microbe characteristics
The date of sampling
Hospital or other place the patient is treated
The name (code) of the laboratory
THL reference labs notify their results as well

7. NIDR NOTIFICATIONS AND CASES ETC.
Physicians and labs notifications are combined into disease cases
– same patient (personal identity code, or birthdate and sex)
– same disease or causative microbe
– within a specific time period (3 months, 1 year, 3 years, 50 years)
Information on notifications and cases is stored in a relational
database
Case data updated with data from National Population Register
every night
– municipality of residence, nationality, possible date of death
Public statistics reports automatically updated daily

8. NIDR REMOTE ACCESS (WEB INTERFACE)
With NIDR remote access web interface, cases and notifications
can be categorized by
– year, month, week
– sex, age, agegroup
– health care district, county
– country of infection (from diseases where it’s notifiable)
– many other variables/fields
Health care districts and Primary health care centers can access
their own area data and monitor the epidemic situation
– list and check new cases in their own area
– THL reference labs genotyping and serotyping information also available
