CHAPTER # 1
INTRODUCTION; SIGNIFICANCE
AND APPLICATIONS OF
ZOOLOGY
Zoology and its Scope
 Zoology: Zoology (Gr. zoon, animal 1 logos, to
study) is the study of animals.
 It is one of the broadest fields in all of science
because of the immense variety of animals and the
complexity of the processes occurring within
animals.
 The knowledge is important for survival of man and
animals
 What we study in zoology?
 All aspects of animal life
 Living in natural environment
 Different activities of animals
 Structure and function of animals body parts at
molecular level
 Human animal interactions
 Caring about diseases especially which are
transmitted from animals to human (Zoonotic
Diseases)
 Getting benefits from animals using modern
techniques
Branches of Zoology
 1. Ichthyology
 Study of fishes
 Ichthyologists work to understand the structure, function,
ecology, and evolution of fishes
 One large group, the cichlids, is found in Africa (1,000
species), Central and South America (300 species),
India (3 species) and North America (1 species)
 Many cichlids mouth brood their young
 A female takes eggs into her mouth after the eggs are
spawned. She then inhales sperm released by the male, and
fertilization and development take place within the female’s
mouth
 Even after the eggs hatch, young are taken back into the
mouth of the female if danger threatens

 2. Entomology
 Entomology, branch of
zoology dealing with the
scientific study of insects
 3. Herpetology
 Study of amphibians and
reptiles
 4. Mammalogy
 Study of mammals
 5. Omithology
 Study of birds
 6. Protozoology
 Study of protozoa
EXAMPLES OF SPECIALIZATIONS IN ZOOLOGY
Significance of Zoology
 1. Significance of Zoology
 2. Understanding of Life
 3. Improving Health
 4. Improving Food Quality
 5. Improving Environment
 6. Agriculture
 1. Significance of Zoology
 Zoology is important to under stand life on earth
 Through the study of zoology, understanding of the natural
world and how we can help with conservation.
 It also offers the opportunity to consider ways to face global
challenges such as climate change and food security,
trying to find solutions to help both animals and humans
alike.
 2. Understanding of Life
 Zoology help in understanding basic features of animal life
 Help in understanding different types of living on earth
 How life is sustaining on earth
 3. Improving Health
 Zoology help to improve health of human and
animals
 Help to understand mechanism of disease and their
mode of transmission
 Previously through uncontrolled diseases can be
controlled, prevented and cured.
 Prevention from diseases
 Curing the diseases
 Healthy life style
 4. Improving Food and its Quality
 Increasing population of world demands more food quality and
quantity
 Animal with more meat production using zoological techniques
 Increase production of poultry production
 Better food products with enriched nutrients
 Development of Transgenic animals
 5. Improving Environment
 Protection of Biodiversity
 Removal of environmental toxic pollutants using small living
organisms from water bodies (bioremediation)
 Knowledge of zoology is important in maintaining natural habitat of
animals and protecting them from extinction.
 6. Agriculture
 Identification of insect pests damaging crop
 Development of biological control strategies
 Development of apiculture for honey, sericulture
for silk production
